Respectfully, the video title is misleading. I thought you would be demonstrating an archaic member of the violin family that was the precursor to the violoncello. It was slightly larger than the cello that evolved from it, and was sometimes tuned a whole tone lower across the four strings. Antonio Stradivari standardized the smaller, modern cello proportions, and after his innovation, every known bass violin was either destroyed, lost, or cut down to size and converted into a cello. The double bass is technically not a member of the violin family, but related to another archaic family of bowed stringed instruments that predated the violin family, called the viola da gamba. They including treble, alto, tenor, and bass versions, and the modern double bass was a descendant of the "contrabass" rendition of the viol.

Amazing, wonderful - like all bass, richer played arco. Not nearly as impressive played pizz, but still beats the hell out of my bass. Would love to play this. Wish he'd read the price tag out loud - but the shop may not have allowed that. It was a Kolstein Brothers though. Always wanted to go there.
