I was in a band with Dan for a several years in high school. We were both fans of BTBAM before he had the opportunity to join, and we listened to them pretty consistently (we had an independent study class which we used just to listen to and talk about music) leading up to him becoming part of the band. At the time, he was primarily a (phenomenal) guitarist, but our high school jazz band had an excess of guitarists and a major lack of bassists. So, he bit the bullet and picked up the bass. That was a little more than 20 years ago.

This is my favorite BTBAM song. I have the lines "Sleep on, fly on. In your mind, you can fly" tattooed on my leg. So I was super stoked seeing you do this song. This band is life changing (hence why I just saw them for my 11th time last week). Dan is such an amazing bassist, and I love how much his bass stands out in everything they do. Props to picking this song. I look forward to more BTBAM videos.

@@bullghani he's just not a virtuoso. Paul is fantastic but people like to get caught up in semantics surrounding technicality. I think he's noteworthy and I can pick out a Paul solo from a mile away; his bluegrass influence is very prominent. It's a great blending of genres that very few can pull off without sounding corny, and that's what I love about him.

@LowEndUniversity I'm a drummer. Played in a punk band through high school. And like many punk kids, I went heavier and heavier as I got older. Punk led to hardcore. Hardcore led to metal. Then, in the old days, I torrented Technical Death Metal after being shown Vornagar. In that torrent were bands like Cryptopsy, Psycroptic and Between the Buried and Me. And the rest is history. Haha

Thanks so much Alex - in all honesty, listening to it this critically, I heard things I haven't noticed before while filming this. Just trust me - put on this whole album and really take it all in. I first heard the first track and it was very accessible. It really sucks you in and sets up the whole album. When it kicked in and got heavy, I was already sold on it despite being unsure of the vocals. That first track is really just an "overture", but is the key to how the rest of the music unfolds behind it.

I have to admit I couldn't get into BtBaM for a long time, but eventually it clicked and started making sense. Now I consider them one of the most unique bands out there. For sure I could never list 5% of theoritical aspects you just throw off the cuff, but aside from all the technical qualities - what I find especially appealing is that surprise factor and dynamics in their compositions. At one moment you're listening to a really nice "clean melodies" section that's building up and then it suddenly goes sideways into absolutely raw and brutal death metallish grind. It almost feels like the artist is telling you "we don't give a flying f**k about proprieties" and I love that. Thank you for the vid and your analysis! P.S. (as a portable audio enthusiast) do you mind me asking what in-ears do you use?

I'm practicing with Dan's songbooks these days and while the lines are not that hard to play chops-wise for me, how he learns all that stuff to play it live in one go is just so beyond me lol. BTBAM is one of these bands where if you don't know your theory and you try to memorize say an hour's worth of material as an amateur it's just daunting. Stuff like Dream Theater is almost easy in comparison, haha

For awhile it made me play differently off the kick then I was used to because I came from a thrash background So when I tried to play with my friends after that they'd get pissed because it definitely didnt fit into what they wanted to play lol I was also probably off or something because it just wasn't something I was ever good at I wish because of him I formally learned music theory and technique

Sooo jealous! I forgot why I couldn't go, but just couldn't make it. I usually have to travel quite a bit to see good shows. If they ever do a 20th Anniversary...I'll be there!

Love this reaction but their Colors Live performance is so good there's no reason to react to the studio version when we can see the band playing it in real time!

This video made me sad. Had tickets to see them in Nashville last night but flight got cancelled. Great breakdown, made me appreciate them more, and therefore even more pissed not to see em!

Glad you enjoyed it - just remember they are one of the hardest-working bands, and you'll have tons of chances in the future. At least, I told myself that when I missed them too...ha!

I'd LOVE this band if they would just stop doing embarrassing crap like acoustic guitar bar fights and french cafe breakdowns.
