My first song from Band-Maid was Dice. A song that opens with drums and bass! I was hooked with the first few seconds of that song! I then went and watched so many videos that night I lost sleep! That was about 5 years ago, and I’m still obsessed with them. Never been like this with any other band before. Much of it is because of Misa and Kanami at first. But then I quickly fell in love with the others. One of many things I love about them is the re-playability. I can listen to them over and over again and always find something new to hear.

I saw them in Dallas a few years ago, and again in Oct 2022, Then Austin very recently. Each time they improved a great deal. These ladies put on a great show. 1st time very little English, Second Dallas show that improved a great deal, But again in Austin even better. I love a band that's this talented. Who strives to improve more and more each visit. And loves being together and performing together. All you hear from western bands is constant infighting arguing and constant insults. I got sick of it. But bands like Band-Maid, Nemophila and Lovebites made me enjoy music and going to shows again.

Japan is the second largest music market in the world, trailing only the US. Bands can easily make a big living never leaving the country. BAND-MAID's ambition to be worldwide has led them to add English to their lyrics since the beginning.

I love Misa's playing in the slower song's in particular, in some you really don't expect the bass to be taking a prominent role but somehow Misa does and still manages to not steal the limelight from the song. That seems to happen with all the instruments actually which to me demonstrates how brilliantly arranged the songs are. Anyway About Us live and Manners live are 2 good examples of Misa grooving in the slower stuff.

They opened with “Domination” when I saw them in Charlotte in May. Drove 20 hours round trip and it was worth every second. The most fun I’ve ever had at any concert in my life. (First show was KISS in 1978 @ Cobo Hall in Detroit) The crowd is the sixth band member. The Maids pause often to interact with fans at every show. Family-friendly, had dad and daughter (in Maid regalia) behind me, family and son for his 16th birthday next to me, old guys in wheechairs, young couples, dude with dreadlocks head banging in the front row…everyone had a blast! I can say that as energetic as these live performances seem, they don’t come close to the real thing. These musicians give 200% on every beat of every song. And they smile while they do it. Saiki’s charisma and stage command is a little scary, in a good way. I’m a musician myself, so I’m watching everyone. There is no weak link here. Not even their techs. In the zone at all times. Interesting aside: Japanese culture is famously punctual. So if the show says 8:00? They will appear onstage at precisely 8:00. And over at 10:00? On the dot. Do not miss an opportunity to see them live. They are special. They’ve traveled six thousand miles to play in the USA, the least we can do is show up and cheer them on!

She's playing her original Black Cloud signature Black Smoker. She has at least 3 or 4 basses from them now. She has an SG shaped bass she used in this show. I've seen Band-Maid many times, most recently here in Atlanta and Nashville last month. Planning on seeing them in LA in August as well. I HIGHLY recommend going to a Band-Maid show. I guarantee you will be blown away by their show. Japan is the second largest music market in the world after the US, iirc. Band-Maid is at a point in their 10 year career where they don't need to play with other bands in Japan or even the rest of the world for that matter. To answer your question though, Band-Maid has never toured with Lovebites or Gacharic Spin. Typically smaller bands in Japan will have what they call 2 man or 3 man shows where all the bands are considered headliners and get equal set time. Gacharic Spin and Lovebites are still in that stage of their careers but Gachapin is starting to move beyond that now. The live music scene in Japan is massive. Its a VERY, VERY competitive market for fans and nearly everyone involved are amazing musicians. You've just barely scratched the surface of what is out there. Just in the female fronted or all female bands there several dozen that you would be impressed with... not even getting into the all male bands.
@MaskedRiderChris Жыл бұрын
Not to mention? The music scene in Japan is not nearly as hidebound as it is in America, IMO. The Japanese appear to be far more willing to take a whole bunch of disparate elements, throw them against the wall, and work with whatever sticks, and make it work as only they can. That's how we got Babymetal, after all, when a guy said "Hmm, wonder what would happen if we combined techno, J-pop, and really heavy metal? One way to find out!"

I've been going to live shows for about 40 years. I've seen some of the greatest bands in all of rock/metal. There is NOTHING like a live Band Maid show. You become part of the band for 90 minutes or so. There is an interview somewhere with MISA where the interviewer comments on her transition. He asks her what do you do if you drop your pick? Answer: I never drop it. That is about as Chad as you can get. As for the Japanese music scene, it is insane. The closest thing you can relate it to is the Sunset Strip in the 80s but on an exponentially largest scale. Japan has hundreds of clubs from a closet that holds 20 people up 1000+. Any night of the week you can find live music from just about any genre. Not sure what part of the country you are in but if you can make it to Spokane, Portland or Anaheim, The Dawn Patrol will take care of you.

I've been to several of their US shows now. As good as they are in these live videos, they are better in person. This band never stops improving. When Misa, Miku and Kanami are standing at the back facing Akane they are making silly faces at her trying to make her laugh (it's apparently something they do a lot). 03:15 - MISA, the bassist, Kanami the lead guitarist and composer, and Miku the rhythm guitarist and founder of the band, are playing Hengao - "strange faces" - with Akane the drummer, which is making funny faces to try and put someone off. Akane, of course, laughs along while not missing a beat. It shows the ladies' confidence in each others' abilities that they can fool around like this while all of them slam out note-perfect Rock at full tilt. Subscribed since it looks like you're diving headfirst down the rabbit hole of Japanese female and female led Rock and Metal bands. While Band-Maid are, for me, THE best Hard Rock band on Earth, the Metalverse is served well by the likes of Lovebites, Nemophila, Babymetal and Asterism (some very special bass work from the bassist of this young but incredibly talented trio, on his 7 string, especially on their MV of CHURCH) and many others. PS In some interview with Band-Maid, the following came up at one point - "The lead and rhythm guitars in Band-Maid are detuned by a quarter tone and sometimes a half-tone on recordings, also during the show to make bending notes and tapping easier. But MISA's bass is not detuned. Which makes the sheet music quite difficult as (e.g.) Kanami is shown as if playing in E while while Misa is playing in E-flat!

They're coming in August. In fact, come to Chicago on 8/3 and 8/4, and you can see them twice in 14 hours!!! That's what I'm doing, so all aboard the Chicago Maidathon (like the Marathon but you don't have to close the streets.) Seriously, great job with this video. The more you watch/hear them, the more you'll see how you will never quite know what's coming next. Their songwriting is perhaps their best strength, despite all of the musicianship on display. In concert, there are no words. As someone else (maybe Tom?) recently pointed out, you come to your first show thinking it's going to be all about the listening experience, but the (warning: mushy stuff coming up) back and forth exchange of sheer love and joy between them and the crowd is like nothing I had ever experienced before. The crowd will be VERY loud and just flat out nuts and the band will rock the house down. The two Chicago shows: the first one is in a small venue late at night on 8/3 and it has good sound. The show on 8/4 is part of Lollapalooza - not usually my scene, but no way am I missing it as I live nearby. They are so fun, and very uplifting in a time where a lot of folks really need that.

This is the Black Smoker, the first Black Cloud bass that MISA received. She now has four or five models from them. From 2013-2016 she played Fender 4-string basses, and then for about a year from 2016-2017 she played a G&L 5-string bass until she got the endorsement from Black Cloud. Band-Maid has never really toured with any other bands. They have played with some of those other bands in festivals, and they did have a two-piece band open a couple of their recent US shows.

Thanks, another great reaction. Band-Maid are my favourite but Gacharic Spin are right up there too, so great to hear you're reacting to them - F Chopper Koga is fantastic. So is Fami of Lovebites. But my top bassist is Miyu Yoshinaka of Asterism. Asterism are a trio, so he often plays the role of a second guitarist. Also, he's 21 years old and has been among the best for a long time. Although the Japanese scene is big (second only to the US in size), it does seem quite close-knit, especially the all-female bands. Band-Maid are quite introverted people, so I don't think they know everyone in the way that Gacharic Spin and Nemophila seem to. The only time they've toured internationally with another Japanese band was as a support act for The Last Rockstars.

Band-Maid ended their shows in the US last October with Domination. The last word they sung to us at the Silver Spring Fillmore was Hello!, and then turned the playlist around by starting the shows this past May with Domination. I was lucky enough to see them again at their May 22nd Charlotte show and then the Sonic Temple Festival on the 26th. If you like bass, then Band-Maid is not to be missed if you have the chance. Japanese music intustry is second largest music Industry in the world. They STILL have shops there that specialize in music where you can go in and buy a physical copy(CDs mostly + vynil + dvds/blurays). They are HUGE on Pop(Idol mostly) and Pop-rockish music there, bands you mentioned (Band-Maid, Gacharic Spin, Nemophila, Lovebites) aren't as popular. More "main stream" oriented artist like Ado, Zutomayo, LiSA are at least 100 times more popular than hard rock/metal bands. Cool projects like Atarshi Gakko (who also skrit more to the mainstream while convering various music genres in their songs) have insane growth in popularity. Don't get me wrong, they are insanely good and there are good reasons why are they so popular. The MAIN difference between "west" and japan is that rock/metal bands, while still less popular and not mainstream, can thrive there. Japanese will give anyone that shows priomise and is interesting at keast a chance. We (on the west, USA and EU) have killed (mostly) our rock and alternative music, only already established artists are promoted, new stuff (outside mainstream) rarely sees the playtime on radio/tv. We destroyed a tv station that was called MUSIC television (MTV) cause frggin jersy shore was more popular at the time. One more thing to note, in Japan i think it's mandatory or nearly so to play at least one instrument in grade/middle school. I know that they have organised "club" activities in school there where children are forced to pick and do one other thing that's not school related, (books, music, sprts, camping, cooking, dance, whatever..), it can be that music clubs are so popular and prevalent that it seems that playing an instrument is mandatory. What i'm trying to say.. with so many kids learing to play an insturment, it's no wonder they have something new and interesting come out every few years. Cheers.

@@LowEndUniversity I love your videos. Discovered you with Band-Maid. If you really wanna hear MISA shine, grab yourself a copy of "Christmass Acoustic". All songs rearranged, everything stripped down, Kanami mostly leads on acoustic, Miku, still not proficient enough to include "precussion" in her rythm acoustic playing, Akane uses hot rod stick to tone it down, Saiki with strong and clear voice, but MISA, MISA's bass playing on that album from the first to last note can be used as a presentation of masterclass in bass playing. If you don't wanna spoil possible future reactions you can at least find a version fo NO GOD from that concert... There's no one who varies their string attack as much while playing unique, guttural, driving bass lines as MISA; there's no one who is a more prolific writer of high quality songs or plays as many satisfying, hooky riffs in one song as Kanami; there's no one who drives, kicks or supports the essence of a songs better than Akane; there's no one who goes in and out with their rhythm guitar creating powerful dynamics, or is as tight to the melody with unusual harmonies lines, or writes volumes of lyrics, (just for one song! ;-) like Miku; there's no one better at vocalizing heavy lyrical content within nuanced melodies while collaboratively connecting with an audience using natural, spirited and graceful movement as frontwomen Saiki; and there's no group that has the attitude, fun and synergy as the world's best hard rock band that is Band-Maid. Fantastic video!. I've had a very good time. Japan is currently the second world music market after the USA. If it has not transcended its borders before it will probably be due to the language barrier, but that is changing fast. The amount of top quality music generated there (and in many cases associated with a product as exportable as anime) is simply amazing. If you want to dive a little more into the immense pool of bassists in that place, I recommend Kiyoshi Manii. For many years she was the bass player in Marty Friedman's band and currently plays solo with her drummer Eiji Mitsuzono and THEY DON'T NEED ANY GUITAR onstage to wow you to the core. A prodigy. Their new single Shambles just dropped a few hours ago & it's a certified Banger!! To say they set the stage on fire might be an understatement lol. 🤘🎸🔥

Try to get tickets for one of their upcoming concerts! I found the ladies 4 years ago by chance, just before the world was closed, and since then I wish nothing more than to see them live. I really hope that after 2 years of touring the States, they will come here to Europe next year. :) And this desire to be able to see a band live now also applies to Gacharic Spin, who due to my own ignorance only gained me as a new fan a few months ago. Looking forward to hearing what you think of them. _____________________ 「 _"Our rock never dies ever. Forever!"_ 」 - from *BAND-MAID* - 'Manners' 🎶🕊

Misa is queen of jumping octaves linearly. Misa is for sure, one of the best rock bassist out of Japan, male or female. She's just good!

Saw them live in Atlanta and Nashville about a month ago. Fantastic. Got MISA’s pick that she used during the Nashville show. Already in a display frame 😃😃😃. She’s playing her Black Cloud - Black Smoker bass in this video.

Yes, I saw Band-Maid live last October. Second best show I've ever been to.

Yeah, japanese bass players are a mood. You should check Tetsu from L'arc'en'Ciel. Absolute beast of a bass player, as demonstrated on songs like Butterfly's Sleep

Misa has been firmly a Black Cloud player since she swithched from G&L Late 2017/ early 2018 I think, all of the basses I believe are from the 'Black Smoker' range with various body styles and colours - Fender Jazz, SG and her latest Jaguar body style. I think she only used the G&L for somewhere between 1 & 2 years at the most. In their earliest videos she played a Fender Jazz 4 string, with the iconic Jini Hendrix sticker. There is another bass that she played for a while live between the Fender and the G&L but I forget the manufacturer and she never used it in a Music Video. All the timings are based on the dates of the music videos they have released and what bass she was using in them.

I saw them in Detroit this year. Only concert I have ever been to. Won't be the last. Also, they opened with this song.

I've seen Band-Maid a few times in Japan. The first time it was a double bill in a small club venue in Shibuya. Ganbare Victory was the other band. The other times I've seen them, it was always a solo show. In fact, most bands I see in Japan are solo one band shows, unless it's a festival or something like that. Japan is a different vibe and they do things differently than here. For instance, there is no General admission to some of the shows. All tickets are numbered and you enter the venue in order of numbered tickets. And since Lovebites is a totally different genre of music, I doubt they'd ever play together. But... You never know, it's Japan after all.

Wonderland live is a great song to react to Misa. They're one of those bands that highlights all their individual talents.

I wish the bass was higher in the mix like on "Manners/Black Hole". I also wish there was a good video for "I Still Seek Revenge" which is one of MISA's best songs.

I read somewhere that Japan has the second largest music industry in the world, behind the US. Found that interesting and so not surprised all the excellent bands I keep discovering out of Japan. I think I remember hearing that Band Maid and Lovebites were both performing at a couple of big US festivals over the last couple years but don't remember them actually touring together.

Great analysis and reaction ! Band-Maid has been around for 10 years, they have over 100 songs in their discography and there are no bad ones ! Can’t wait until you check out Gacharic Spin, and you also need to add Nemophila to your list of Japanese bands !

There's a reason we stan BAND-MAID, and it's because they're amazing at what they do! I love MISA's playing and her tone, and her being beautiful doesn't hurt a bit either. She reminds me of what might happen if you took DNA from John Entwistle and from Flea, spliced it into a pretty Japanese girl, handed her a bass guitar, and said "Have fun!" One of these days I'm going to go see BAND-MAID live, so help me. They've never toured with LOVEBITES, sadly.

Worth noting that "Domination" was the 22nd of 23 songs at this concert, so we are seeing them near the end of a very long performance and they are still bringing it.

“Without Holding Back” needs to be next for you. Has a killer bass solo but her composition and playing throughout is stellar. One of the guys will have to email the video file to you - it’s not on KZbin, but they won’t block it - they don’t do that. Enjoy the journey down the Pigeon Hole!! Take care and rock on!! 🔥🤘🏼🎸🎸🎸🥁🎤🎼😀✌🏼

Nice to see someone who teaches bass reacting. It's hard to pick a song to recommend because they have so many great songs and because the ones that showcase Misa the best are mostly from live performances that are only on special edition DVD/Blurays and not official videos on YT. I'll also recommend Dice (MV) or the Dice/Different double-song live, and Sayonakidori. Thank you for coming back to Band-Maid.

Misa is sponsed by Black Cloud and I'm sure she has others in her arsenal but it's a pretty good bet that if you see Misa, you're seeing a Black Cloud Bass.

I coaught Band Maid at The Fillmore in Silver Springs in October of 2022, and at The Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville in May of 2023. I was up in the gallery at the Fillmore and in the front rows at the Brooklyn Bowl, both was awesome shows. At the Brooklyn Bowl I was right in front of Misa's side of the stage so got to see her playing just a few feet away. They are just unbelievable live both their music and stage presence. As far as other Japanese bassists, I would suggest Kiyoshi (the song Hero, official MV note: She was Marty Friedman bassist on one of his world tours before going solo again) and MINA, formerly of Girlfriend, its best to see MINA in the video "Full House" from the band Girlfriend. As far as Band Maid, If you revist Band Maid, check the instrumental "From Now On" would be my suggestion. I plan on seeing them next year again, whether in the US or even if I have to travel across the pond.

I've seen them six times since October. By mid-August it will be 9 times. The shows are just high-energy fun. They've already played over 50 different songs live this year. They've still got 30-40 others that I would love to hear live. Their catalog is ridiculously deep for being around for 10 years. You'll get a bunch of suggestions, and I wouldn't argue with any of them.

Not toured together but, If I remember correctly, Lovebites, Band-Maid and PassCode did crossed paths in 2018 during the Japanese leg of the Vans Warped Tour.
