MISA, The bass player.... she does all three styles, pick, finger and slap. She just chooses the style for the song, and she has stated that the Band Maid "sound" usually requires the pick sound. Miku, the rhythm guitarist, Band Maid is her baby. She started the group with her singing in mind, But she soon realised that her vocals were not of "Rock Standard", so they brought in Saiki pretty early on. Cut a long story..... It was decided that she should learn rhythm guitar, and Kanami (lead) is here teacher. The thing is that these ladies ARE THE REAL DEAL. You lads have only listened to 2 song...on KZbin anyway. I looked and listened to the Billboard Best 10 ROCK songs for 2019, none of it is ROCK. Not only are these girls the best female Band I've heard, They are one OF THE BEST BANDS I've heard. They are that good. Kanami (Lead guitarist) is the main music writer and MIKU writes the lyrics. Spread the Band Maid word
@neilcam Жыл бұрын
The other thing I'd add (even if very late to the party) is that they weren't packaged together; Miku literally created the band, found Kanami, who brought in Akane, who brought in MISA, and then Saiki was recruited by Miku as her own replacement as lead singer (an amazingly unselfish/egoless move). And that took place in 2013. They've been getting better and better, earning their chops the old fashioned way for 10 years now.
@RevStickleback4 жыл бұрын
They weren't "put together" as such. Miku, the rhythm guitarist, had been in an idol band when she was younger, and had the idea of starting a maid-themed band. She found the guitarist on the internet, as the was doing covers. The guitarist was being backed by the drummer, so got her on board. The drummer knew MISA, the bassist, from her music school. They auditioned Saiki for the lead singer part. As for MISA and pick-playing, she has a solo during their instrumental "Onset", where she switches from pick to plucking in the middle of the solo. Oh, and Band-Maid have a heck of a lot of good songs. They aren't one of those bands that have 4-5 big songs and the rest are a bit "meh". In fact, few can agree what their biggest songs are. This one gets suggested a lot because of the intro.
@sacluvsBM4 жыл бұрын
They put themselves together just like Mick and Keith or John and Paul. Jimmy Page went out of his way to meet Akane after seeing them play in Tokyo in 2016. Nice but you have no idea what this is about. You need to first and foremost understand the gap. You're not there yet. But you will be. That rhythm guitarist is the band founder and lyricist. And if you saw how MISA palms the pick while slapping and then opens her palm to have it drop between her fingers. No one does that. No one. Hey Reverend this is directed at the reviewers and not you. I know you know Band-Maid. Peace.

It drives some Band-Maid fans absolutely crazy that others suggest this song for a reaction because it is not their most technical song by far. Most of us love it because it's just a simple straight forward hard rock song. Looking forward to anything else from Band-Maid. There's so much out there so feel free to binge react.

Miku is Japanese with a Japanese mindset not an American gen y/z bimbo. Originally thinking duel vocals, label said one should hold a guitar, Saiki was left handed - did not look great. Miku's thought was if I hold it I should play it so she made it her mission to play and play well (Asian attitude). It has now allowed Kanami more freedom as lead guitar and also allowed the bassist to expand her wings in the music. Also different from N American bands is the lack of ego. They work together and decided to be good friends.

The band was created by Miku, Rythm GTR, and the whole concept was hers. They were formed organically by Miku, not a record label. She worked in a Maid Cafe in Japan and thought the dichotomy (or gap as many like to refer to it as) would be interesting between being dressed as maids and playing the kind of music she envisioned. She writes most of the lyrics and Kanami writes most of the music.They are not artificial, you won't hear them using auto-tune and they can play the hold b'jesus out of their instruments. There are mellower and heavier versions of pieces they put out. Reincarnation is REALLY hard hitting if you want something heavier. Don't You Tell Me has a great live version where Misa (bass) and Kanami (GTR) have a "battle" on stage; it's great. The biggest complaint I've heard about them is that the songs aren't long enough. Other people complain about the appearance. My only thought is that the world is full of male metal bands who have a "look" but nobody ever seems to complain about or ridicule them. I'm 68 and have seen a LOT bands come and go and I don't know if there's anybody who does rock like this any more. Chili Peppers? You haven't heard enough. I hope you follow up. I would suggest ONSET which is totally instrumental. Bass Picking? She can slap the hell out of the bass when she wants to. Sorry, I'm raving. Look at more live videos and you'll find you're getting deeper into the rabbit hole.

The maid image was chosen for a couple of reasons. First, the visual component is extremely important in the Japanese pop culture, much more so than in the US. Oftentimes, the visual actually is MORE important than the music. Second, Band-Maid is all about the contrast. Miku (the founder) wanted to portray the cutesy maid image then bludgeon you over the head badass rock music. They call that contrast "The Gap". BTW they are playing the Inkarceration Festival this summer in Ohio. I'm sure they're going to play other dates while they are over here.

And one more aspect l think. Since a Maid Cafés job is basically a low paying crap job it just might also serve as a reminder to small pigeon of a place that she might not be too eager to have to return to. A motivator of sorts. Possibly?

Lead guitarist Kanami has stated that Carlos Santana is a huge influence on her, and there are fan cams of her throwing in little Santana licks here and there. They aren't a Patreon indy band. They belong to a major(ish) label in Japan, Nippon Crown, who is a big Karaoke manufacturer/distributor/publisher. Revolver Records is the recently created sub-label that they are on at the moment. I wouldn't be able to stop myself from listening to this band if I had a channel, so to prevent yourselves from cheating and listening to other songs, just go ahead and call in sick with the flu for a couple days and knock out 8 or 10 reactions. Then you can listen to a wider variety of your new soon to be favorite band's songs! :D I know that you have a bunch of songs to go through, but for the heck of it, my favorite is Puzzle live. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYDYgGOmnKh1i9E There is an excellent acoustic version as well, but I'd save that for later. I consider conqueror their 3rd album. On the first 3 albums all the songs they submitted were rejected by their management and they were given songs written by professionals & producers who wrote all the lyrics, music, and arrangements for them. It wasn't until "Just Bring It" (the 4th release) that their own songs made up the track list. Even in all the interviews for conqueror they themselves introduce it as their "third major album" I tend to agree because I think to myself, with the as the first 3 albums not having a single lick written by them...can it really then be considered a "Band-Maid" album? It seems like that's the feelings of the band themselves referring to conqueror as their third album

I saw them live on the first US tour on the first date. They're even better live in person. Also Misa is so dedicated to the bass that she actually briefly left the band before their second major album (after 1 major album and three indie EP's) to take lessons to get even better....and she'd already been playing for 10+ years. There's a translated interview where Miku (band leader, rhythm guitar, co-lead vocals) said that when she came back and recorded the bass tracks for World Domination that she had gauze on her fingers because she had literally played through them so many times and been practicing so hard that she had ripped several nails apart and her fingertips were so raw they were bleeding through the gauze.

Some of the best musicianship I've seen in a rock / metal band in a long time...and they don't over rely on any one thing, or stick to any prescribed formula. And the duo of Saiki and Miku makes them vocally very dynamic. And yes, Akane is a juggernaut. If you love fantastic and proficient drumming, and you want to keep it on the female rock band tip, but move away from the J-rock scene, check out The Warning from Mexico, whose unique brand of propulsive rhythm based rock will have you moving and grooving in your seats! And they sing most everything in English, which helps add an even deeper layer of resonance to it. Check out Dull Knives or Hunter or Queen of the Murder Scene. You will be pleased. Jimmy Page likes them especially Akene, drummer. He insisted on a selfie with her. Also Tony Visconti (David Bowie and T Rex's Producer) has worked with them on their latest album. They put themselves together, Miku proposed a maid themed band to Asume and they gave a go ahead. Miku found Kamani on the internet, who then contacted Akene, who in turn brought in MISA. Saiki was brought in after they determined a more rock style singer was needed. Miku's guitar instructor is Kanami. Kanami writes the music and Miku writes the lyics. One of the best thing about Band Maid, is that it is not a record company concept, idol band etc. Miku, rhythm guitar founded the band. She looked online for a lead guitarist and found Kanami. Kanami knew Akane, the drummer and suggested her. In tern, Akane, went to music school with Misa, who plays bass guitar. Originally just the four members. Miku, very humbly agreed her voice was not strong enough for lead, so they had an audition and chose Saiki. No Simon Cowel, America/Britain's Got Talent etc, rubbish. As Augmintt, has commented, who said they make money through Patreon, is a mystery and it is totally incorrect. Band Maid have been to the USA three times over the last few years. Only a few dates though and not major venues. The 2019 tour was six venues, all I believe, sold out.

They are all mid-late 20's in age, so they aren't kids/teens just starting out. 3 full length albums and a half dozen or so singles are out there to discover. The newest 2 videos are Rinne (pronounced "Reen-neh") which means Reincarnation, and Blooming. Rinne is the heavier of the 2, but Blooming is a tour de force of Akane Hirose's drumming. As far as BandMaid goes, I would suggest "Onset", an instrumental that really shows their chops. Another one of my favorites and something from Japan that you HAVE to check out as well, are BABYMETAL. It's a different concept completely - although the skirts would have you draw similarities, at first - but they will blow you away, guaranteed! BABYMETAL are a 'project', a 'music company' (as in theater company), a 'team'. First and foremost, they are the three girls that front it all. (Originally, until one of them left because of health reasons 1.5 years ago.) One singer and two backup/chorus vocalists/dancers. They are accompanied by a band made up out of premium musicians and the music is written by various (officially) anonymous writers. It's all brought together by and was the brainchild of a genius producer, a true metal head. The girls were 11/12 when they first started in this project, they're 22/20 currently and have earned the respect from people like RHCP, Korn, SlipKnot, Rob Zombie, Rob Halford (from Judas Priest) and many others. Yes, the whole thing was originally 'put together' by this producer, Key Kobayashi, but the girls literally grew up in it and are now, together with the producer, the driving force behind it all; the musicians are top-notch; every song is different and an homage to different styles of metal; the singer is excellent - has been from a young age and only gets better - and their choreography is bonkers! ("Choreography in Metal?" Yes, choreography! ;-)) Their style is a genre that they've pioneered, called "Kawaii Metal" (Cute Metal), combining all sorts of Metal styles with J-Pop, with Ska, Funk, Reggae, Dubstep, Italo Disco, EDM, traditional Japanese folk music, and a whole lot more, strewn in as well. If you can set aside your preconceptions of "the girls themselves don't play an instrument" - No, but they're the vocalists and dancers! - of "the whole thing didn't start in a garage" - No, but everyone involved has their heart in it and are the best at what they do! - of "eeeehhh, it's young girls/women, I don't know how to feel about that" - They've never been sexualized in any way and if you feel weird, that's your problem. - of "it's pop with metal, that's not metal" - Rob Zombie once said, "the girls rock harder than most bands we've toured with" and Rob Halford affectionately calls them "heavy metal monster ladies" - then you will see the quality, joy and bad-ass-ness that's BABYMETAL. (Like the singer, Suzuka 'Su-Metal' Nakamoto says: "No thinking, just feeling!") This year is their 10th anniversary and their recent, third album was #1 on the Billboard Rock album chart (and #13 on the Billboard album Top 200) but some of the classics I would like to recommend first are: "Road of Resistance, Live in Japan" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIWoioh8nLGpm7s "Megitsune" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXyWf4CQdrp-fdk "Rondo of Nightmare" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6m8cpZ_rtBledE "Karate" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/faenZHZ-dplrpqM Two of their best live performances - BABYMETAL are an act you have to see live - and two of their best music videos. Enjoy, gentlemen! Rock on! (P.S.: And, no, the girls weren't forced into it and there were no auditions or anything like that. The producer, working at a kids division of an entertainment company , Amuse Inc., recognized the vocal chops of the singer and thought she would be better suited for rock/metal than for pop. He then started an experimental project with her, complimented by two flanking vocalists/dancers and combined it with his love for Metal. It was a small project, under-funded and starting in small clubs and food courts. It blew up unexpectedly, internationally, and they've had to work their asses off, fighting against the preconceptions of the Metal community - Metal elitists, mainly - but, many awards, three highly acclaimed albums and ten years later, here we are! :-) )

Band-Maid has a lot going for it. Miku (rhythm guitar, vocals) knew exactly what she wanted. People might think she came up with this idea as a cute way of promoting the band, but I don’t think so. Look at the audience at a Band-Maid show. Look closely and be honest about what you see. She knew exactly what the target audience would be and how to bring them in. Smart woman. Now the talent the band has? Well, that did sort of fall into place if Wikipedia is to be believed. No matter how the group was brought together, there is no denying the talent. Each personality brings just a little more quirk to the group to make them that much more entertaining to watch. The fact that these women actually like each other, and spend time outside of the band together, shows in the quality of their work on stage. They are entertaining to watch, plain and simple.

Don´t get me wrong, i find all the Band Maid members really attractive women, but if a producer wanna just get some "nice looking gals" to make a band, there´s a lot of more attractive (in the formal way) than them in any idol group And they aren´t an exception in Japan, there are others female groups with very attractive woman, and very talented. Comes to my mind quickly Lovebites or Aldious. In Aldious you even can find the daughter of Terry Bozzio (the drummer of Frank Zappa: Marina Bozzio playing hard. Both groups do Power Metal and a very good level. Aldious more on a melodic side and Lovebites more fast and furious. Also there´s some, not a lot but some good numbers in female groups in Japan, and not now but from years ago. You can find bands like "Shonen Knife", a punk/pop band from the 80 (still active) or famous pop bands like Scandal who are on stages from 2006 and a lot more. Japan have a very good music culture and a lot of people can play an instrument. In the Band Maid corner, i´m not a professional of course, but i think that when you see a musician relaxed and smiling on the stage, is because he/she knows what is doing and can do it well, and all of them are smiling. Well, MISA (bass player) don´t smile a lot, but this is because she is very shy (really). fortunately she have a small bottle of bourbon on an amplifier to medicate this (not a joke, she really take some whisky shoots on stage, or beer)

Geddy NEVER played with a pick. He actually let's his nails grow out a bit on his plucking hand so it sounds like a pick, but it's his fingers. That said, yes, sometimes the picked sou d is right for the song. Chris Squires was a beast of a bassist who always used a pick. Thrill was mostly with the fingers as well. ベースのミサは、スラップの時はピックを一指し指と手のひらに挟み込んで、残りの指で弾き、絶対に落とさないと言っている。一回のライブで使うピックはせいぜい2枚だということだ。The bass guitar MISA states that when slapping, the pick is pinched between the index finger and the palm and played with the remaining fingers and never dropped. The number of picks used in a single live is at most two.

fun fact: they are not "just old enough to start rocking". Looks can be deceiving for us westerners when it comes to asian people. These ladies are in their mid-late 20s (I think Miku is 29, Saiki 24, not entirely sure about the other 3 but I'm pretty sure they are in the same area). Misa plays with a pick a lot but sometimes also does fingerstyle and switches to slap a lot for solos. Kanami, the lead guitarist, is the one who writes most of the bands music. The thing is that they are all very experienced musicians. Kanami used to be a singer/songwriter, Akane and Misa both are from the same music academy (and have both done live-work, too), Saiki was a singer and dancer and even Miku (who only started playing guitar when she formed Band Maid) used to be an idol-type singer.

Band-Maid has always got something interesting in their songs. For myself their music is like going back to hearing something you've been missing. One song that doesn't get suggested a lot is Yolo kzbin.info/www/bejne/qp7TqmRpd7KCeqM. Most of their music is certainly hard driving, and though Yolo isn't one their harder songs, it's certainly a wonderfully written and very well performed rock song. Really though, you can't go wrong listening to any of their songs. I'm sure others had mentioned this but the bassist, Misa, uses different playing techniques depending on the song. I saw in an interview a while back that she admired Paz Lenchantin of the Pixies, I don't think it was Deal. In-the-end, these ladies have some skill. Enjoy your discussion 👍.

Good intelligent objective review, but I'm always amused by western "geezers" (not you two) who assume that because they're Asian and ladies (ages 26-30!?! - not that young; three of them classically trained musos), they might have trouble nailing a bit of "rock". As I understand it the "maid" image was based on by the founder (rhythm guitar backing vocals) to establish a dichotomous image of what's expected of a hard rock band (black, leather, testosterone blah blah) or "gap" as the Japanese call it. Anyhoo, enough rambling (came across them when invited to of theirs last summer in London), check out "Onset" live or one of their recent MVs (Dec 19) Rinne or Blooming. Look forward to the next review!

@ Avery Perversky I was there watching Johnny Winter all four times he appeared in my city in the 70's. At one memorable "Winterfest" (as they called it), Edgar Winter and Derringer were also present and performed what seemed to be an all-night rendition of "Tobacco Road". I loved those shows back then, and they are great memories, but this is now. Over 40 years later. You are the first one I've ever seen come into the Band-Maid comments section and slam their fans the way you have. To say that we are a bunch of drooling pervs that pleasure themselves while watching these ladies speaks volumes about you and your mindset. From where in the deep dark recesses of your twisted mind did that idea come from? I know you like your "guitar hero's" to be hairy, sweaty shirtless Mark Farner types screaming in your ears. That's what makes it legit rock-n-roll in your world, am I right? It's time for you to grow up and start thinking with the head on your shoulders, instead of viewing every attractive female you see as fapping material. I hope all of the females around you in your life are aware of your proclivities, and are taking the necessary precautions.
@averyteplitsky8854 жыл бұрын
My good sir, perhaps you should read my comment again, as in absolutely no way did I even indicate that I was at all interested in these ladies as "fapping material" (clever, mind you!), and please spare me your ridiculous righteous indignation that my opinion regarding the high number of views for Band-Maid videos isn't based somewhat on certain well-known stereotypes! And while I did state that their vocals and musicianship were fine, whatever my so-called concept of the supposed prototypical guitar hero is completely irrelevant here. Lots of talented women out there who are highly proficient on their chosen instruments regardless of genre. Admittedly, this music is not my cup of tea, (and I am a fan of heavier music btw). but let's not kid ourselves that a lot of the disproportionate appreciation for these ladies isn't based in principle on their presentation, regardless of its intent. Also, I don't necessarily think that even if a certain percentage of said fans do fall into the "drooling fan boy camp" that there is anything necessarily wrong with that, provided that it is openly admitted and not hidden behind an extensive amount of verbiage (ironic, considering how faux-verbose this comment is,LOL!), trying to obscure the obvious. Regardless, I belatedly envy your past attendance at those Winterfests and admire your otherwise excellent taste in music. Have a nice day... and thanks for that 'cool' new nickname, although in all honesty, I'm more of the Expository Eunuch type! (With full apologies to Dennis Miller for the borrowing!!)
