➡️ "Make Yourself" from ‪@incubusTV‬ has always been a go-to album for me on long drives. Funnily enough, I've NEVER ventured further into their body of work! In this video, I react to "Are You In?" (by request) from their album "Morning View" for the first time featuring the smooth, funky bass grooves from original bassist Alex Katunich (known as Dirk Lance). When an Incubus song comes on, I always know the bass will be front-and-center, and this track delivered. I discuss the massive mojo behind the "swung" 16th notes in the bass groove, how Dirk uses chromatic passing tones to roll through the chord progressions, how he arranges the bass line to accommodate each song section, his PHAT warm tone, and how he plays with the tonal center of the bridge chords to add a little tension.

You should check out their 2nd album - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. It's full of really trippy stuff and it's definitely the heaviest record they made. The opening track "Redefine" has a pretty wild bass solo.

I think they peaked at a crow left of the murder. Still some great ones here and there after that though. The baseline in Anna Molly is one of the best in their catalog. Ben Kinney is a beast. But I can understand why some people might fall off when you did.
@aavila1206
@aavila1206 9 ай бұрын
@@mitchellmayer6326it’s because without Dirk’s thick tone and fat grooves Mikey and Jose had to fill in the space left because of Dirk’s style. They all started to overplay to compensate and Kinney had to keep up to compliment them. Now we did get some great parts written by all of the individual musicians but their songwriting lost their signature jazz grooves from when Dirk was with them.

@@aavila1206 Mike wrote most of Alex's parts. The bands shift in style wasnt accidental or a result of Ben coming on - it was the other way around. Theres a reason a chunk of the fan base dropped off with Alex's departure because like him they wanted more of what incubus was already doing while the rest of the band wanted to try new stuff. Ben is the better bassist for the kind of music they started making after Morning View.

@sephiroth7818: Fungus Amongus & Enjoy Incubus were more funk/rock inspired-influenced. S.C.I.E.N.C.E., their true second album was what lumped them in the Nu-Metal category & was truly their hardest album. I would say it's by far their best, but to be fair I dropped out of listening them after Morning View.
