BASSE DANSE
Published by Pierre Attaignant, 1530.
Performed by Yasuhiko Higaki, 2022.
Note:
This video features a performance of Basse Danse from a collection published by Attaignant in 1530, played by seven Yasuhiko Higakis using Renaissance instruments.
First, the piece is performed with five parts: soprano dulcian, alto dulcian, tenor dulcian, bass dulcian, and bass rackett. Next, it is performed with four parts in a lower octave using three bass dulcians and one bass rackett. Finally, all parts are played together, with the soprano, alto, and tenor parts doubled an octave apart. The dulcian is the predecessor of the bassoon. The rackett, with its long, thin internal tubing, produces much lower sounds than its appearance suggests. It produces the lowest sound among the instruments used here.
Instruments used:
- Soprano dulcian by Paul Crosby, made from designs by Eric Moulder
- Alto dulcian by Paul Crosby, made from designs by Eric Moulder
- Tenor dulcian by Korber
- Bass dulcian by Graham Lyndon-Jones
- Bass Rackett by Paul Crosby, made from EMS Kit

Очень необычное звучание, проникновенное исполнение. Местами казалось между исполнителями не хватало сыгранности, а вообще хорошая мелодия, сейчас такую не напишут.

I would guess that this is the first type of European music the Japanese People would've ever heard... I can imagine (without stretching my imagination too far) that the Portuguese and Dutch merchants would've been playing instruments similar to these, if not singing the same sort of thing. For sure, the people of Japan encountered and appreciated the charm of this type of music LONG before the average "Westerner" was aquatinted with "Gagaku" or any other classical Japanese music.

I know what you mean... I'm guessing the "tube" is doubled back and forth on itself, like a bassoon... I think it's called a "sackbutt"? 😂

It appears to be an extraordinary form of the Rackett in that it is blown through the central axis with a reed and has like seven to nine bores around the diameter which are connected into one long tube. I wonder if the bell exits below? I would guess it is about three meters of pipe.
