Theory: The Girl and The Boy are estranged siblings, not ex-lovers. That's why she still has a key to his house, and why no one has cleaned out the fridge or moved the dead flowers from the porch, or is questioning her increasingly unhinged behavior. She has a key because she lives there, or is the only other person with rights to access the house, and she's isolated herself from everyone they knew. The siblings escaped an abusive childhood, hence the lyrics about being young and alone, nowhere else to go, having each other's backs, and being bound together and "defined forever" by traumatic experiences. But their relationship is has now become toxic, with The Girl unable to move on and let go of their traumatic past, while The Boy has begun to heal and move forward. He doesn't want it to be just "us against the world" anymore. He is forming friendships and relationships with others, and wants her to do the same ("all this bad blood here, won't you let it dry?/I don't wanna talk about the bad blood anymore/I don't want to hear you talk about it anymore/if we keep looking back, we'll drive ourselves insane!"). But she won't, or cant, and her brother is beginning to distance himself from her as a result. This distance is actually healthy for him, but for her it's devastating because he is the only person she has any kind of meaningful relationship with. The siblings relationship deteriorates to the point that they aren't speaking, or are barely speaking. Then one day her brother is at the beach, maybe messing around with friends, and ends up falling into the water and vanishing. He obviously drowns but his body is never recovered. His sister, unable to bear the loss and already crippled with unaddressed trauma, falls into psychotic depression. She isolates herself in their house, eating his food, wearing his clothes, trying desperately to feel close to him again. She blames his friends for leading him away and driving a wedge between them, which is why she won't open the door to receive their flowers. In her mind, he wouldn't have died if he hadn't been out with them. Alone and mentally ill, she eventually becomes so sick that she gathers his possessions and burns them as a makeshift funeral pyre for them both, and then walks into the sea, drowning herself on the same beach where her brother was last seen.

It sounds to me that the song is about not being able to let go of the past and her friend dying. It ate her up inside, like she kept thinking about it, ruminating the pain like eating rotten food instead of fresh food, which are the new experiences she could have in life that are nourishing.

FINALLY...somebody understands this song/video. She's consumed by the thoughts that haunt her about their relationship. Whether he is dead or just gone is irrelevant. She holds the mementos of him, letting that consume her. The TV playing a time that she remembers him and the setting. Him drowning is her drowning, in her mind. Her escape, is to have her physical match her mental. She tries hold onto things to ease the pain that he's still around, ie the meal..the she probably planned on eating with him. To eat that, to dull the pain. The end, is her either faux realizing that she's moved on by discarding the remnants of the past, or that she's moved on, but still stuck in the prison of drowning in the waves of her own mind. Awesome video.

so...the guy (dan) drowned at sea. either by accident or his girlfriend drowned him/let him die. lets say she drowned him. she is unable to let go of what she did to him and is permanently stuck in the past (which is presumably where the 'bad blood' theme ties in- she hasn't had closure and so there is still 'bad blood') and this is shown through the rotting fruit, dead flowers and the way he is playing on a loop on the tv. he haunts her because of her guilt, which is shown when he appears in her living room, and possibly the red flashing lights symbolise the police and danger and things similar to that. then at the end, she collects all of the physical memories of him and i'm assuming drowns herself? because she is unable to live with the guilt of what happened and this is her way of finally letting go of the 'bad blood'. or maybe not. just my theory.
@BijouxVaudou8 жыл бұрын
Was thinking this, the visions of him in the room, putting his clothes on, the rotten food and dead flowers - she can't let go of what happened to him. "I don't want to hear about the bad blood anymore" could be like she's sick of it being in her head and can't get it out - like telling herself she doesn't want to think about it any more, hence probably drowning herself at the end.

I think that the video was about a girl who's guardian (probably older brother) drowned but she couldn't accept it (explaining the missing person posters). She is depressed and so won't leave the house (or she may be awaiting her brother's return) explaining the rotten food (she refuses to leave to get new food, either because she'll miss her brother coming back or she can't bring herself to). She is haunted by the faint idea he died (explaining the disappearing masked man). She is eventually hit by reality and when she realises that he died, she sets fire to his things and drowns herself, so she'll be with him again (also, we see her wearing what appears to be her brother's clothes throughout most of the video)

+alexia deleon 1st time I heard this song. My impression was that she was obsessed with him, perhaps they were close at 1 time. They were somewhat obsessed with each other or she was with him, but they wanted to move on, or he did. She didn't want to lose him, so she killed him, so they'd be together forever. Her obsession stayed, evident by the way she horded all of his stuff, such as the missing report video, picture, missing report paper, flowers, and even the food. Each time she ate a lil of that old food she felt she was getting closer to him. But she was perhaps bothered by the fact that she killed him or that she couldn't get any closer to him, hence the imagining of him standing there every now and then. To get even closer, she figured she'd burn his stuff and kill herself, somewhat trying to follow his exact footsteps like earlier with the food. That's why it showed him drowning with her. She was obsessed and a psycho.Having just rewatched this, that's exactly what it was about. She was a stalker, obsessed to be just like him...

I think I have my own idea of what might've happened. Watching the music video over for the third time, and hearing "as the friendship goes, the resentment grows" I immediately thought they were dating and maybe this guy cheated on her or something and she was heartbroken, in a blind rage she broke into his house, murdered him, and hid his body. And, as the days go by seeing his face everywhere, and knowing what happened to him she was wracked with guilt and that's when she tries killing herself. I got this idea because it's similar to what happened in a graphic novel "Anya's Ghost" Emily, the name of the ghost when she was alive, I believe dated this guy, and something happened and he ended up cheating on her and in her blind rage ended up killing them both, and dying herself by falling into a well, breaking her neck then dying from dehydration. So, this also leads me to believe this girl's resentment for the guy she loved was growing over time, maybe he'd been unfaithful to her many times and she finally got sick of his lies, she seems emotionless as well. As Emily did too, although Emily was crying. This girl, no emotions at all. Maybe, she didn't care. Just didn't want to be caught known as the girl who snapped and murdered her boyfriend.

I find it quite funny how in light of Taylor Swift's song, if other people hear this song for the first time (and they don't bother to look at the year that it was released) they'll think its actually a response to Taylor Swift's song "Bad Blood". Lines like "All this Bad Blood here, won't you let it lie?" and "I don't want to hear about the Bad Blood anymore. I don't want to hear you talk about it anymore." are the perfect responses to Taylor Swift's song. Her song is about holding on to Bad Blood, Bastille's is about letting it go and moving on, because we can't change the past, but we can still move forward. You can make your own conclusion about the maturity level of each song.

Listening to Bastille is like listening to the music beneath the ambitions, bluster and greed of mankind. That surface noise is usually overpowering and drowns out everything else but Bastille somehow captures the essence that runs beneath all human enterprise.

I think that this video is more of a metaphor for Dan's relationship with his girlfriend. Maybe he didn't actually fall in the lake. This is just her way of envisioning his departure from her life. The house represents her past with him. When she enters it, she is revisiting her memories with him. Based on the name of the song, they probably split up because of an argument or something, hence the lyrics "these little things define us forever." Whatever small thing they fought over defined the rest of their relationship. It left them with a bad memory. Yet, he wants this "bad blood" to dry so that they can only keep the good memories. The TV news report was probably her own mind, wishing and longing for him back, or replaying the bad fight they had. As someone mentioned in another comment, the rotten food represents the "bad blood", being the bad memories. When she goes to throw herself in the lake, I think that she is finally cleaning herself from the bad blood. Dan was doing the same thing, and at this point they forgive each other, and towards the end they find each other again. I don't know if this theory is right or not but I like to think of it this way!

***** I know it's not all about breakups. But all of her songs are mostly about breakups. If you heard Bad Blood the first time, you wouldn't know it would be about Katy Perry. Her songs are catchy, but they all almost have the same concept about breaking a relationship. Where are the songs that have a deeper meaning?

No it's about her brother/lover/friend who disappeared (although he drowned and is dead-most likely by suicide) and her life has now become like the waking dead because she can't let go of him signified by her hanging at the beginning of the video and eating rotten food. So at the end she finally decides to kill herself by taking his stuff and jumping into the ocean and as she's being swept away she sees everything he saw as he was also dying, as a cycle of letting go

there is no girl, no lover. If you read into it, its about two brothers who were on their own (since the house was older and carried more warm colours, it was an older persons house. Likely the parents either left them or died, leaving the two with a grandparent who passed at some point) and the younger of which drowned the older in the ocean. The youngest refused to leave the house after the fact, which is why the food was rotten. The brother eventually gave into guilt and burnt his brothers belongings, ultimately throwing himself into the same ocean that he killed his brother in. No lover, no boo hoo love story, just simple murder. Just simple suicide. Its something you see done often in music.

My thoughts on the video: They are siblings the bad blood is the guy he was probably a thief or something the sister used to love and respect him and they were happy but then the sister started to get annoyed that the brother kept getting in trouble with the police and stopped respecting him. the brother was dead to her the food is the rot in her heart and when the brother went missing she didn't care. Maybe she killed him

Interesting interpretation. For me, the amazing thing about this video was that I didn't analyze it at all -- which is unusual for me, since I usually "overthink" everything. It was like 3 mins of pure emotion. The thing that really hit me was the drastic shift at 2:45 when she wakes up. Going from feeling disgust and fear to just pure, heavy sadness.

All of the imagery in this video is symbolic. Her wearing his clothes symbolizes her obsession over him. The dead food in the refrigerator and her eating it symbolizes that their past relationship is dead and in the past, her eating the rotten food symbolizes how unhealthy all of this is and how she is poisoning herself by refusing to let go of what they once had. The dead and dried flowers symbolizes the love that once flowed so naturally and freely between them and how it has completely dried up, there is nothing left outside of her feelings for him. The saying that repeats about bad blood refers to a fight that happened between them from the point of the break up on. She can't see that there is no possible future between them. It is obvious that acting the way that she is is toxic to her health and mental state yet she clings to it because she can't except that it is over. He no longer loves her. Her walking out of that house full of death and memories of him symbolizes her finally leaving her feelings in the past where they belong. And her throwing his stuff into the ocean symbolizes a death. Not a physical death but a spiritual one. She is throwing away and putting to rest all of the negativity that she has been holding onto all that time. She is letting go of him. The the images of both of them drowning at the end symbolizes how she has let go of their relationship and how she is no longer the woman who was held back him or her feelings for him.

Or, her boyfriend actually drowned and she couldn't live without him. You're looking too deeply.
@XDeedge11 жыл бұрын
Since I always get annoyed at people complaining that they don't get it, here's my interpretation: The girl in this video is Dan's (the main singer and guy drowning) ex-girlfriend. Whether an educated guess, she is the murderer or just a crazed belief, she believes he has drowned, a fact obviously kept from the public who has still declared him "missing". Driven to insanity, either from guilt or grief (read into it as you choose), she goes around his house, wearing his clothes, eating his rotten food and such. She eventually wakes up from this, after seeing haunting images of his ex-boyfriend, revealing that this is in fact a dream, and that she has attempted drowning herself in a bathtub. Unable to cope, she collects various objects depicting her boyfriend in a box. Note the dead flowers, perhaps indicating she hasn't left the house for a few days, isolating herself in her depression and/or guilt. She eventually takes this box to the beach, in all likelihood the one, her boyfriend drowned in, burns the box on the shore, as she jumps in the water, undoubtedly a second suicide attempt.
@XDeedge11 жыл бұрын
Also, new thoughts. Entering the man's house, making herself feel at home, and most importantly the rotten food, suggest she probably is deluding herself into believe nothing has changed in the situation. When obviously, this house and also this relationship has fallen into disrepair. Perhaps it is this acknowledgement upon waking up that makes her realise how bad things are and prompt her second attempt.

My Theory: Her brother dies and she doesn't want to let go. Seeing the rotten food, her wearing his clothes and the t.v. showing the missing persons report. She sees him at times b/c she feels as he's still there. Then she's in the bathtub and she realizes he's gone and she collects his things. She goes to where he died and she throws his things in the water then herself. As she's drowning she sees him where it's potrayed as he's dying all over again, bit with her.

One more thing... someone commented that she was unattractive & another commented as to whether or not it was a male or female in the video, and I admit I questioned that too for the very first few seconds of the video until I quickly realized it was a disheveled grieving / depressed female who appears to be wearing the boyfriend/ missing man's clothing, and as I watched further, realized she is actually quite beautiful underneath all that sloppiness, dirtiness & lack of hygiene. When she gets past all this and lets go of the bad blood, gets on with her life and cleans herself up, washes & combs that long greasy hair, and puts on some female clothing & maybe a little makeup (although she doesn't really need it...but then again, what girl REALLY does?), she would be stunning, IMO. She has perfect features. She was most likely selected for the video because she is so naturally beautiful & still looks beautiful despite being made to look so un-madeup, sad & sloppy for the affect of the storyline, but we are all so accustomed to girls going above & beyond what they should to appear attractive in our society, that so many viewers didn't react too well to her appearance by putting it down & even questioning her gender! But... Such is the genius of the producers of videos & the crew of professionals responsible for making her up (or "down" in this case) to appear to us as a sad, "ugly," grieving girl who has given up on caring about her appearance due to her overwhelming emotional state. 👍

I think the video...this is just my intake on the situation in the video. The guy in the sea and the person we see in this video used to be good friends or possibly something closer (look at the lyrics and you'll see where I'm coming from), but then something went wrong...horribly wrong..and it is implied that the person we see in the video killed the guy we see in the sea (implied that he dumped the man's body in the sea). She breaks into his house and takes over that domain, but begins to have thoughts about the crime (as she sees it on the news and keeps having flash backs about it) and it wears her down emotionally and mentally (which is why she ate rancid food and tried to drown herself in the bathtub), so she gets rid of her deceased friends things and burns them.

Just my theory: The girl in the beginning when she is holding on the tree, to me, means that she wants to forget (hanging self) but can’t let herself leave everything alone. The rotten food and dead flowers shows that she won’t let her past go away and she thinks of it almost replaying itself in a way. When she sees the red lights, it means danger, or somebody will know her secret. She is in the bathtub, almost like she feels like she is connecting with him in a way since they would both be in water. He is missing, so the flashing lights might mean that she had something to do with him being missing. And the words “all this bad blood won’t you let it dry” she doesn’t want to let go meaning that she in the sense “won’t let the bad blood dry”. She keeps messing with it, making herself feel guilty and seem like she is still with him even though he is gone. She goes in the water at the end to basically end what is happening, so she won’t feel the guilt any longer. I know it is long but it’s something lmao.

I remember my cousin would play this song for me at our grandma's house before she died and I loved it but I never knew the name and I am so happy I finally after 5 year had enough brain power to find it again and I still LOVE IT ❤

From interview with Dan. His words. What about your single, Bad Blood? What were your influences for the lyrics to this song? I was thinking about relationships and friendships you have that help form you as a person, and, despite these being important, how you can completely lose touch with those people. Drifting away from people is both really weird and very normal. What was the idea behind the Bad Blood video? We wanted to make something cinematic and mysterious that didn’t impose any kind of meaning on the song and left it open to interpretation.
