After the war (as told by his son Gene Guarnere) Bill Guarnere had to be treated at a hospital for a heart attack. The nurse asked him when was the last time he saw a doctor, and he replied: "Doc Roe in Bastogne". These guys were tough.

Smokey Robinson would make a full recovery and, on a tour of Bastogne in 1994, found the canteen cup he dropped when he got shot, still there in his foxhole after 50 years. The December 20th airdrop was a Godsend to the defenders of Bastogne, as among the various supplies were M1 Pack Howitzers and shells to deal with the German Panzers.

Watching this on Christmas eve 2024. I was an FMF Hospital Corpsman. Served 86-96. My oldest son's best friend is a Marine he was in the second battle of Fallujah in 2004. Christmas day 2005 he & I went to our local VA center to pass out presents & sing carols. In the dining hall , families visited with their loved ones, sang laughed & had a good time. Except one old man alone in a wheelchair crying inconsolably. A little girl 4 or 5, asked her daddy "why was he crying?" Dad looked at me, we shared a look and he redirected her to her great granddad. I knelt down beside him and simply asked where? His answer said it all "Bastogne " Through tears he told me Christmas day 1944 the day this episode shows, they were shelled for hours. When it was over, he was the only member of his platoon still alive. He wasn't Easy Company but he was there. Christmas ever after was a personal nightmare for him the rest his life. I held him for a bit and my Marine came up & said "Doc, we have to go" the gentleman looked up at me and said God Bless you. You Doc's never got a break that whole time. I will not argue against his expert knowledge.

One of the big reasons that the 101st was able to survive Bastogne was because of supply air drops. The planes knew where to drop the supplies and ammo was due to what were known as "Pathfinders." This was a small group of men that were dropped into the area with radio equipment. Being a "Pathfinder" was such a dangerous job that it had an 80% average casualty rate and was volunteer only. One of the leaders of the group of Pathfinders that was dropped into call in those supply drops was a man named Jake "McNasty" McNiece, who was once a part of the 101st airborne himself. There is a KZbinr who does a biographical video on him. The KZbinr and the channel are called The Fat Electrician. I highly recommend checking out his video/possibly do a reaction to it as a follow up to this episode.

You're watching these events 80 years after they happened. I met the actor, Shane Taylor, who played Doc Roe at a Band of Brothers actors reunion in Bastogne during December of 2016 when my daughter, who was living in Germany at that time, got the tickets to celebrate my birthday.

Thank God for Doc Roe. Speaking of medics, I heard the day before yesterday that another Pearl Harbor survivor passed away. His name was Harry Chandler and he was 103. He was a Navy medic and provided aid to those wounded in the attack. With his passing, there are only 15 Pearl Harbor survivors left. Knowing the stories of what these people did makes me proud to have worn the uniform of a United States Sailor.

In the previous episode, Guarnere asks if "anyone knows about a place called Lulu's". Well, I'd say he found it and got an unwelcome souvenir, hence his UT infection in this episode. The Battle of the Bulge was the bloodiest engagement for the US in the entire war, in all services and every theater. They lost 10% of all of them at the Bulge.

I saw an interview where this series was praised by the men who were still alive to have seen it, the one thing that they all agree on though was that it did not even come close to depicting how bad Bastogne actually was. I always remembered them saying that. This was a one-hour episode to us; they suffered through this for a month straight.

The Christmas Eve truce of 1944. Three Americans show up at Vinckens' s cottage in the Huertgen Forest near the town of Aachen. They had been lost and searching for their fellow soldiers while ducking Germans. One of the men was badly wounded and they asked if they could come in. Mrs. Vincken and her 12 year old son let them in. A while later there was another knock on the door, except this time it was 4 Germans who asked if they could spend the night. Mrs. Vinckens told them she had other guests that were American. She insisted that they leave their guns outside. The Americans did the same. They all sat down and ate together soon relaxing then talking to one another. One of the Germans looked at the wounded American and said he would live as there was no sign of infection. The next day they shook hands and the German corporal, who was the leader, gave the Americans a map and a compass and gave them the safest route back to their lines. While not like the Christmas Truce of 1914, the story is touching. The story was told after the war by Fritz, the 12 year old boy that witnessed the whole thing.

Speaking of blood, you can used to almost anything even if you never learn to like it. I took care of a patient once who had been in an explosion. His nose and ears were mostly gone and he was still split open because the docs were afraid to enclose bacteria carried in by metal fragments. It was hard to look at but after 5 minutes, I adjusted and did what I had to do for him.

Alright! Glad you got to Bastogne Laila. Every episode of this now legendary show Band of Brothers is amazing. While it seems most people like the later episodes the best, I think Episode 6 “Bastogne” captures everything incredible about this show but it also captures the finer points of the WW2 & the Easy Company story in this episode. While he makers of BoB smartly followed major characters in the show they also changed the POV & we also got attached to other minor soldiers of Easy in this show. Getting the POV from medic Eugene “Doc” Roe was a genius move. You feel like you’re embedded with them in the woods during December 1944 because it’s so atmospheric & immersive. You feel the cold & feel the pain. You get to meet others too making it even more emotional. This is the “Chef’s Kiss” episode of BoB.

I like to tell people of the two great one-liners of WWII, both replies to the Germans regarding surrender. As stated by Col. Sink in this episode, at the Battle of the Bulge, Brigadier Gen. McAuliffe, the 101st Airborne's artillery commander and acting division commander since Taylor was away, replied, "Nuts!" At Dunkirk, in the face of a massacre at the hands of the Germans, a British naval commander replied, "But If Not!" It's a quote from the Bible, Daniel 3:17-18 "If it be so, out God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burining fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golding image which thou hast set up." A reply from a time when the British were a more biblically literate people. The Germans singing Stille Nacht/Silent Night was also an homage to the Christmas Truce of 1914 in WWI, which is said to have started when German and British troops started to sing Silent Night in their own languages.
