As a DIYer doing a 2 wall basement shower for the first time, I used Kerdi board (Schluter) and found it really simple and only a bit more in price that the Red Guard/cement board. Factor in mess, drying times, fumes, etc and I can't see why you wouldn't do with Schluter. The boards are light, can cut with a knife, they are waterproof (of course you have to cover seams and screw penetrations). When I demo the upstairs shower I'm going to use Kerdi board again and this video (which was great by the way) just clarified that decision for me.

This is a GREAT video! I wish I'd found this a month ago, before I started ripping walls out. Still hanging cement board (which I'd have done slightly differently had I found your video sooner), but this is great info for when I get to the Redgard stage. In our master bathroom. Ugh, lol. Luckily I used Hardie's upgraded waterproof board for the entire long wall, so only need Regard on the two short walls (and over the screws on the Hardie waterproof board). Anyway, this deserves a lot more views and likes -- you have one of the best tub surround videos out there, and I have watched plenty. Thanks for this!

I'm also not a fan of RedGaurd - I prefer to use Hydro-Ban - Much easier - less time consuming process (application and drying time) and almost odorless - Plus I believe its a better waterproofing liquid membrane. I actually prefer to use waterproof Foam board and just seal the joints and screw/plates with Waterproof sealant, and not have to cover the whole wall with a waterproof membrane. I use a 12" wide waterproofing of Hydro Ban on the transition from Wallboard to drywall areas. Thank you for your excellent and very informative and honest opinions videos!

You need to prime a cement board with a diluted mix of redguard + water. Text from the redguard instructions. Prime all surfaces to receive RedGard® with properly applied manufacturer's sealer or with a primer coat of RedGard®, consisting of 1 part RedGard®, diluted with 4 parts clean, cool water. In a clean pail, mix at low speed to obtain a lump-free solution.

I barely made it through the whole video, the reason it's still wet the next day is because you're putting it on too thick. I understand the jug says what it says, but putting it on in thin Coats 5 Coats with a roller in one day, the 2nd day after the 1st day you hang all the concrete board tape and see all the joints with alkali resistant concrete board, seam tape and thin set like you mentioned. Let it dry and then put 5 Coats on the next day with a fan with a respirator. And I'm using exactly the same amount you are. it should end up being credit card thickness so you're doing it in 2 days and I'm doing it in 2 days, but I'm doing it with a roller, so it's the same, im just using ardex s1k..... Also different municipalities call for different distances on concrete board screws. Where I am it's six inches on edge , Is and eight in the field...... Good video man!

Great vid by BRT. Finally to see someone do it this way. I have done my first bathroom loooong time ago the same way and relied on common sense. Now watching you do this Steve I got the idea and wonder what if we redguard cement boards prior to installing them onto walls? 👀 Would be much easier handling the trowel on a flat (sawhorse plywood table) or even on the floor and definitely way less messier. Then it would left only to embed the tape over the seams and corners. Hmmmmh And for the smell, if I remember correctly it was strong ammonia based odor that after two hours working in confined space definitely gets to you. Never used hydroban. Does that smell strong as well?

I agree about the smell. It's awful. I have never used Redgard as my primary waterproofing method. I use it as extra protection in corners, around windows, anywhere i think might need just that extra bit of insurance - especially with Schluter since i don't trust their method of using thinset after watching some of Tile Coach's stuff. I trust the poly sealants much more. I may never buy anymore of it since i can get Hydroban locally now.
