We solved our own problem since we couldn't find the information we were looking for regarding bathtub plumbing on a slab foundation.

Hi Jones The tub drain "Ys" to the toilet discharge pipe and the toilet is vented. Distance is about 24". You are correct, there were no threads in the iron pipe. You make good points and with some engineering I can envision your suggestions working. However, the owner of this house had specific ideas about how he wanted this done and was willing to pay for. I was actually quite confident in the solution we used so long as we did a better job than the plumber before us. Good questions.

The black tar is what they cover the pipes so that the concrete doesn't break down the PVC over time. Builders do this before they pour the slabs. It's not to seal pipe in any way.

That "black tar paper" looks like the coal tar paper that was used to prevent pipe corrosion. I would see it on the steel gas mains and service lines in older neighborhoods when I worked for The Southern California Gas Company. That stuff is loaded with asbestos fibers for rigidity.

Very dangerous asbestos fibers wet or dry safe to wear safety glasses mask eye protection air protection and maybe a jumpsuit to protect yourself from it causes long-term lung problems even can lead up to death and you will never know it until you get in your late ages in life first symptoms rather so of hard to breathe and cough so if you experience some of them symptoms please have it check the lungs serious part of your body please be safe thanks co-worker be safe in the South baby

Home Depot and others sell a push in or slide over adaptor that will allow you to seal a piece of PVC pipe in the drain. You simply use a No-Hub rubber fitting over the stub of PVC. Cleaner, tighter and less work. You have to scrub smooth the outside or inside of the pipe in the floor so the neoprene/silicone adaptor seals well. Use a Dremel or and end grinder or drill with steel or brass brush to get the mating surface smooth. Many modern toilet flanges are also installed this way in a slab with cast iron pipes imbedded.

that tar like substance may have been to control insects. on grade slab construction is on the ground. termites are a worrisome problem here in florida and from what i understand the tub drain area gets slathered with tar to keep the termite from coming up around the drain assembly. termites love holes in concrete.

If it was cleaned up...one could use the likes of Devcon '5 minute' plastic steel putty to glue in that steel adapter in... it's great stuff used in Industry for years... and can be sourced from Grainger Industrial supply once it goes off makes a great solid joint...

Try this next time. Remove stool for working room, clean inside of cast hub and install hub gasket. Measure from floor to bottom of tub drain "on new tub" and from wall to center of drain. do the same with overflow tube. Next grease inside of gasket and set waste & overflow then dope the shoe, set shoe gasket use a "little' duct tape on "side" of gasket and shoe only, repeat with w/o gasket then set tube install waste plug and w/o plate. re-install stool and you're done

Our new tub is a foot away from concrete floor drain of the old one. Can we run a foot of pipe from the floor drain and to under the new drain, then install the drain and overflow from there or do we have to chisel our way over there? Thx for the video!
