Even Bob Hawke was there?!? Truly my birth year is the most fun year I've watched yet :P

Clearly the Australian public dont take too kindly to the RX7 taking it up to the V8s back in 83 but when you consider what little the naturally aspirated Mazda had under its bonnet respect must be due. Allan Moffitt was a great competitor and while he may have lacked some charisma many of the other top drivers had, no one can deny his committment and determination as a race car driver to his craft and the development of his cars, not to mention his many contributions to the sport. He didnt deserve being booed by the crowd and l hope he doesnt leave this world thinking he wasnt admired. I have traditionally been a Holden man but can still appreciate the greatness in the other teams and drivers. Whilst booing is poor form, l guess l could understand the booing incident with the GTR Nissans. As Larry once said ' they are racing cars the rest of us are in touring cars'.

What Moffat said from 18:30 to 20:10. The CAMS concept of bargaining for freedoms forced them to accept a low Center of gravity sports car, and even the 13B Mechanical Fuel Injection engine, it had no torque, and every 39 laps, it would be lapped by No 25 Holden based on the Mazda's huge fuel consumption. Massively reduced tyre wear and no valves to drop, probably peeled back that fuel use disadvantage. Like Turbos and All Wheel Drive through the Group A era, even weight breaks and tyre size restrictions could never balance off an engine with 200 lb-ft at 5000 rpm. Verses 500 or 450 lb-ft at 5000 rpm in 5.8 or 5 liter V8. The Big V-8 Bangers had it all over the RX-7 at Bathurst.

It's consistantly Holden fans that boo. They are the most bogan, least well mannered fans. I know the Dick Johnson rock incident is considered an accident these days but...what a coincidence that it happened on lap 17 - and when a Ford was clearly faster than the nearest Holden.....

@kylebutler7142 the rock pushed out of the bank from the weight of the crowd, 2 important facts that everyone forgets are, the role the truck played he almost hit it & it blocked his view of the rock, he took evasive action & had no chance of avoiding the unseen rock & the simple fact that the many donations Dick received & the publicity enabled him to turn that small 1 car private entry, into one of Australia's best financed & most competitive teams with a far longer life span than any of the other big budget teams.

I can't say know enough about the history or subtleties of this series or era but I don't understand why Moffat was booed. Fantastic coverage from all! Wish we had something similar in the states.

Moffat was always booed because he wasn't Australian and switched from driving an Australian car to a Japanese brand.

I dont think Mr Hawke is into motorsport somehow. I've always been a fan of Brocky. But that day in 1983 when Allan Moffat was at the Podium I was ashamed to be an Aussie.

Brock owned the car and back then it was in the rule book. Moffat did it in 1980/84, Grice did it in 84, Dick Johnson was cross entered in all his cars in 88/89/90. Infact, Dick drove all 3 of his team cars during the race in 88 and tried to hop into his 2nd car at its final stop when running 2nd in 1990. It was also in use throughout Europe at that time to. It appears Brocky was the only one good enough to win in the second car.

@MJTAUTOMOTIVE Moffatt was cross entered into the bill obrien and bob Morris everlast falcon and drove a stint during the race in it. As I have previously mentioned before EVERY top team and driver did this during the 80s and early 90s (was outlawed in 92). It was just that Brock was the only one good enough to win it.
