Flew on this flight recently, OD178 and OD177, they finally painted the livery, good flight and good friendly crew, very spacious seats, make sure u pre order your food as they run out quickly. Have to say the 737 max is such a great plane, the next gen GE engines are very low noise, barely hear it on take off and it flies so smooth like butter in the air very impressed, love it! Will def use batik for Bali flights in future

Thank you so much! If you’re flying from Adelaide to Bali on Batik, it’ll be Batik Air Indonesia rather than Batik Air Malaysia, they’re similar but I personally find Batik Air Indonesia to be better.

flew this exact 9m-lrp plane last year to jakarta from kuala lumpur in december. i sat in the window seat (a few seats behind where you sat in this video). overall the experience was quite nice and we landed early. the landing was also smooth.

Another great review as always, Hugo - and a real interesting one as well! - Firstly flying on an aircraft with no livery is quite unusual (I guess it’s no big deal, but it sort of makes you initially question the airline before you board) - Secondly, the requirement to shut down your phone completely during take off and landing was also strange as you pointed out. I guess each airline has their own policy, but on most it’s no issue at all to have your devices running at all times as long as they are in flight mode. Strange this airline makes an issue if it - but if it’s requested by the airline, then it should be adhered to (as you did). I did see though, that they seemed to question you again as you disembarked? - Thirdly, A ‘bare bones’, economy only 737 with no wifi/entertainment is normally used for short - medium domestic hops rather than a 6 hour international flight. Hopefully the cabin gets upgraded to what they advertise (as you specify). - Fourthly - this is definitely not a ‘full service’ airline if you are paying for food, have no entertainment or wifi, and there is only one travel class. If they are advertising they are full service, it’s strange they are getting away with it. Hopefully they are getting feedback in regards to this. - And finally- climbing out of Melbourne during a rain storm (when you were finally able to get the footage) also seemed a bit freaky!! All in all, a very interesting trip report about an unusual and less travelled international airline. Like you I would have been a bit ‘off putted’ by the experience. The main thing is, they got you to Bali safely. But besides that, the experience didn’t seem overly enticing. Even the Jetstar ‘Bintang Express’ seemed like it would be a better option than this (at the moment). Thanks for the honest review! 🙂✈️

Thank you so much! Yeah it is. Yes, they asked me as I left the plane if I was “vlogging” and I replied “yes is that okay?” And she said it was fine. Yeah I agree, I really hope they refurbish a few more as I mentioned. Yeah it’s crazy how they get away with it. I would say that yeah, even the Jetstar A321neo is better despite having less legroom. I had the same experience as you when I fly with Virgin Australia from Sydney to Brisbane. During safety briefing, they stopped me to film everything which is an absolute non-sense. Even took photos with crew, I was so damn disappointed

the 737max ur flying still has mcas my friend father (he is a pilot o batik air malaysia) told to me that you need to not use ur phone cus of mcas tbh when im flying with 737max8 OD308 i think from KUL-DPS i still use my phone cus idc what the cabin crew say btw amazing video love it

They all have MCAS, just with enhancements, I assume that Batik Air Malaysia has the new MCAS as all airlines should? Thats interesting to know the reason though, thanks for the info. Hahah. Thank you!

Batik Air Malaysia actually flew a seasonal service on the 737 Max 8 from KUL-MEL which was 7.5 hours! They’ve since upgraded it to an A330 however.

Really? No way, wow that's the longest Boeing 737 Max 8 that can fly for 7 and a half hour medium haul flight for the 1st time on a narrow body jet. My longest narrow body jet was Salam air when I flew last July for the 1st time, also my longest wide body jet from Muscat to Phuket and the flight is okay, more 6 hours on the Airbus A321neo. Salam air is a a low cost airline in Oman.

Im pretty sure why you cant use a phone during takoff and stuff was because it was a nightime flight and it was just for your eyes to adjust to the darkness incase an issue happened nd you had evacuate especially if your eyes werent adjusted because the light of the phone you would struggle to evacuate because of your eyes

Fantastic Video Hugo. Definitely wouldn't do this flight as i don't like the Batik air style, but you still explained it in a great way. Also, do you know about this new small airline in western australia? I think they are called Nexus Airlines and they use Q400s to fly from Perth to Geraldton, as well as milk run services like the REX QLD service.

For low cost, on the better side. But theoretically Batik Air Malaysia is a full service airline and considering the flight time, it’s not very good, apart from the legroom which was on par with full service airlines.

When I travelled with AirAsia they also made us turn off mobile phones completely, I think it just depends on the airline. I also agree with you that it would be much better if they had the proper batik air cabin, they use there 737s on some really long routes, including the 8 hour hop from Perth-Auckland which they’ll start later this month, that’s a really long time to be stuck with the lion air cabin
