Many great memories going to the video store with my Dad on the weekend picking out movies to watch! My Dad passed away a couple years ago but I sure this Doc is gonna bring back those memories. The 80s was a great time to be a child and into the 90s too.

I grew up in the late eighties early nineties as a kid and loved going to our local video store and picking so many interesting movies on vhs and still collect movies today on blu ray dvd and in 4K

My father owned a vhs store from 1980 until 1992 and i grew up in there. He let me watch whatever i wanted. So many great memories. I feel sorry for todays streaming youth they have no idea on what they missed out on

Makes me sad that we have no video stores anymore. So many great memories getting movies or just browsing. I remember Fridays when i wouldnt go out with friends and me & mom would go to Blockbuster and hang out. Such a great time to have grown up, so simple and not fast paced.

I used to go to Blockbuster with my mom on Fridays after school. She'd always have on some 1950s cassette tape, I guess that was her own warm nostalgia and now it's mine too I suppose. Almost anything I'd rent would be either Godzilla, Jackie Chan, or some 1950s Sci Fi monster movie. Usually you can only rent one, mom would rent one for her and dad, but on those rare occasions if you are allowed, you can rent 2 things. Usually the second one would be an old NES or N64 game. Half the fun is walking through the aisles trying to decide what you want, and looking at the VHS box art, back when Box art was an art instead of what it is today, usually just an actors back, with faces of the cast around him in dramatic pose. There is also an urgency because your mom doesn't want to be waiting all day for you. Once she says she's getting in line, and if you don't choose one, you'll get nothing, you gotta pick something right now! When you get to the counter you can smell the popcorn and mixture of candies, there's also usually a movie or something playing in the background. When you're old enough you enjoy shooting the breeze with the pothead at the counter who is always so enthusiastic about movies and is always happy to give you suggestions for next time. Ah, good times.

Some really interesting ideas about loss of community with the closure of things like video stores. I wonder if this is linked to the polarization in societies today? People sit at home on social media, rarely leaving the house to converse with others through human interaction. We get everything delivered whether it's food, clothes, movies or we're online. This is why I shop in person and not online where I can - when it's gone it's gone.

Yes I think with the loss of the video store, malls, and other things we've lost our human interacting communities. I too try and go out and shop inperson as best I can. You don't know what you got until it's gone.

I 💯% agree! The only reason I stream is cuz it's basically a Monopoly. I don't have any other choice except Red Box. And if video rental stores come back, streaming services can say Bye to half of their ratings! And half of their ad revenue!

I love Rob's Van Halen shirt. This video was a cool nostalgic trio down video memory lane. I'm in the process of building my very own Blockbuster video store in my home garage. I have 8 ex video store shelves arriving August 5th, with 5 shop dvd shelves too, hundreds of VHS tapes and posters too. I'm sourcing the carpet now too. Will start painting the garage the canary yellow soon. I'm doing this to have a nostalgic escape in my home and to open it up to parts of the community who want to show their kids what we grew up with.

My dad got his paycheck on Fridays, so we would go grocery shopping on that same night. While we were out, we would stop at a video rental store and I would rent SNES games and my parents would get movies. We went to West Coast Video and Blockbuster. We rented on Friday, and they were due back on Sunday evening. Those weekends were always great. We spent the whole weekend playing games and watching movies.

Great video. I worked for Blockbuster and Hollywood Video before the demise. But frequented them in my childhood including a few mom and pops that I miss especially when we lived in Florida. My collection of movies I could run a video store! But someday lol so many memories thanks for bringing even more memories back.

Only 5? Blockbuster was the worst! I ran a mom & pop video store and our staff all got unlimited rentals - but could only have 7 rentals out at the same time. I had 70,000 tapes in my store. It was like an all-you-could-eat buffet.

I worked at a small video store in the 90s. It wasn't as cool as working at the surfwear and bikini shop but not bad. Every night I would walk out with an armload of horror tapes to take home and get stoned and watch. Most of the screeners would pretty bad, but we also got plenty of Gems like Fight Club, Office Space, Scary Movie, Bully, Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator, etc. I bought a bunch of the horror VHS when they closed but unfortunately gave almost all but Return of the Living Dead to a friend who built awesome miniature horror houses.

a lot of terrific memories going to the video store what is good about Blockbuster and many other stores back in the day is that they would have a huge selection when looking at most of the ex rental movies on ebay currently that represent blockbuster and other stores i think that there are titles that have Meaning for that store ,as in a relic but then there are titles in that 'never seen it" bunch that when its recreated today, i think the Nostalgia factor is a good thing for example, you have a vhs line of classic films Blockbuster did called "blockbuster classics" and it Not only had a Earlier print of "its a wonderful life" with james stewart But it also has a alastair sim version of "a christmas carol" which wouldve played back in the day in syndication but that is One example of Many vhs's but then you would have another example, which is the disney vhs's for example, animated movies like robin hood another example, Pinocchio another example, the rescuers another example, modern animated ones like beauty and the beast ,aladdin and the lion king another example is the movies that tend to be fun for Both adults and families in the action and comedy categories for example, cop movies tons of great examples

i think there are other instances during the initial vhs era, greg where besides finding vhs's at the normal video store ,which is the main source mcdonalds would also Offer movies as part of a Promotion this is something that is quite interesting but the irony here is since the vhs selection for mcdonalds promos were so small compared to if places like Blockbuster offered a movie at a lower price to buy , you would think that the titles for those restraunt promotion versions of those vhs's would match the level of popularity of the rental versions had they had a larger variety

We were at the premiere of PHANTASM in Lawrenceville ga and there were people walking around as the characters while we were waiting in a LONG LINE. And they gave me a FINGER cutoff in a coffin box Brother STOLE all kinda stuff when he became a www666AntichristUSAville INVADING MASS MURDERER but it was VERY COOL at 12 in 1979 And then VIDEO STORESwith 6 or so movies we went to and rented them when I got stuck in TOCCOA GA at 19 or so .I wish I would've been playing games like I do now
