It's always funny to hear anyone say "Batman doesn't kill" because it typically suggests they didn't get into Batman until watching Batman Begins (a movie in which he _kills_ the villain at the end). Batman started out killing people with a gun in the comics before they started finding a groove with the character. The Tim Burton Batman movies were enormously popular at release and he kills in both of them. Not killing was always more of a Superman thing. Batman's killed a lot in comics until more recent decades, and even then, it depends on the writer.

Michael Keaton in the 1980s and 90s was a huge comedy star, so when he was first announced to portray Batman, most of the fans rebelled. Even those who liked Keaton in his comedies thought that he was a bad choice for the Caped Crusader. But he turns out to have been one of the best actors in the role. "Batman Returns" has Michelle Pfeiffer as the Catwoman. Not only is Pfeiffer properly feline as the killing kitty, but her chemistry with Keaton is hot and electrifying.

Keaton's first movie was called Night Shift (1982) starring Henry Winkler, who played The Fonz on a popular show Happy Days and Shelly Long. Keaton stole the movie from everyone with his crazy comedy genius. Then there's the serious Clean And Sober (1988) with a great supporting role by Morgan Freeman!!

Yes, the Burton/Keaton films are certainly the best of this early Batman saga. It's ironic they moved on after "Batman Returns" with other directors claiming Tim's sequel was "too dark" ...considering what we have these days.

Yes, every movie is made in a certain time and context. Batman ‘89 was a revelation and a massive phenomenon at the time. It was what it had to be, and IMO holds up very well, but for those expecting exact adherence to comics I could see it being a bit weird. I look at it (and Returns) as a Burton film, and existing in it’s own Bat-universe filtered though his unique imagination.

Adam West played Batman in the 1966 Batman movie as well as the television series. (The 1966 Batmobile is my favorite of all.) It is shot in a campy, comic-book style with bright colors both on sets and in costumes, and "word-bubbles" with words like "BAM!", "POW!", "BOOM!", etc. flashing on the screen during fight scenes. It is a fun watch for nostalgia reasons, but it is not in the same category as this film and others of the franchise. Tim Burton's vision looks more like a dark, graphic-novel interpretation while still maintaining the unique characteristics of villain characters. Later films follow the darker tone as well.

This Batman came out during a time before the whole “Batman doesn’t kill” became a standard for his character. Batman has gone through many changes through the years and at one point even used a gun. There are many moments where Batman does seem to kill people. Granted most of these moments are do or die. It seems he doesn’t outright kill unless forced too. It’s also a Tim Burton movie with a lot of unrealistic moments so you can easily write off that most of those men survived. Either way it’s a great movie and changed the way people look at super hero movies.

Burton's Batman was the best Batman! Keaton's performance is truly great, with shades more subtle than other versions of the character. You should check out Batman Returns - it's always a toss up for me as to which is better. I think this movie has the best villain with Nicholson's Joker, but DeVito is very good as penguin, and the chemistry between Keaton's Batman and Pfeiffer's Catwoman is insane, making the romance more complex and developed in the sequel. God I love these films.

Besides all the Batman movies, The Batman, The Dark Knight, Batman And Robin, etc., there is a big but now very underrated show called Gotham which ran from 2014-2018 you should check out. It's all about how Jim Gordon started and ended up to be Commissioner. Has all the villains and of course Bruce Wayne and, in my opinion, the best Alfred as he is a fighting Alfred played by Sean Pertwee from the movies Event Horizon (1997), and Dog Soldiers (2002). Alfred was so popular, that it even spawned an Alfred series called Pennyworth (2019-?), his last name. Gotham is on Netflix and worth checking out!!

My Take: The 1989 "Batman" film, directed by Tim Burton, is a masterful exploration of the human condition, delving into the intricacies of duality, identity, corruption, and redemption. The film's protagonist, Bruce Wayne/Batman, embodies the struggle between good and evil as he navigates the blurred lines between justice and vigilantism. The Joker, portrayed by Jack Nicholson, serves as a haunting embodiment of corruption and the destructive power of trauma. His character arc serves as a poignant commentary on the fragility of the human psyche and how even the most noble of individuals can be consumed by their inner demons. The film's portrayal of corruption is not limited to the Joker's malevolent actions, but also extends to the Gotham City's elite, who are willing to overlook the Joker's atrocities for their own gain, highlighting the destructive nature of unchecked power. But amidst the darkness, the film offers glimmers of hope through the theme of redemption. Batman, a dark and brooding character, ultimately finds redemption in his actions, bringing justice to the city and the people affected by the Joker's actions. Overall, the 1989 "Batman" is a film that masterfully weaves together a tapestry of complex themes, elevated by its cinematic prowess and expertly crafted performances. It is a cinematic tour-de-force that continues to resonate with audiences to this day. Regenerate response

In my opinion this is the best Batman movie: it's the most compelling, closest to the style of comics and with the best villain (Nicholson is in my opinion the best Joker of all). The Joker is called Jack Napier only in this movie and in the DC Animated Universe, while in the comics (therefore the one fans rely on most) he doen't have a precise name and surname. Joe Chill is the one who in most of the TV series and comics versions kills Bruce Wayne's parents (so he's the "official" one). Here instead he is Jack Napier's buddy, but it's the latter who shoots them.

The first live action Batman was a movie serial from 1943. The next, was another serial entitled Batman and Robin from 1949. The most ambitious BATMAN was the 1966 tv series which lasted 2 and a half seasons ( 1966-68 ) However, although the TV series made the character immensely popular, it didn't take the character seriously. Then, in 1989 this BATMAN movie came along and ( even though it had its share of flaws ) it captured the publics attention and changed their over-all perception of what The Batman should be. One thing this movie does is: it gave the Joker an alternate identity. Jack Napier ( which is a play on the term "Jackanape" which means: an impertinent person ) The Joker of the comic books never revealed the Joker's true identity - but his origin story about how he became the Joker is very similar to what is shown in this film. Also - the Joker had nothing to do with the death of Bruce Wayne's parents in the comic books. Small-time hood Joe Chill was responsible for that.

@@DocMicrowave dido... ya, we try to ignore/forget all of those super corny stupid batmans ... with arnold swarzennegar and jim carey and etc.. that happened in the 90s... they don't exist to us... shudders... adam west batman movie and tv shows/series was the good type of corny (especially for its time), with its iconic use of the "comic dialogue bubbles" that it would have popup, like "pow", "wham", and etc... but, in trying to re-watch it, the stupid corniness is really noticeable... but it's still better than the 90s batman movies... as you know it's really old school, as you're watching it, so you give it a pass, even as you notice how corny and bad it is....

@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 lol. About the 60s Batman movie. I give it a strong pass as well. It was campy, cheesy and corny. And it was well aware of it, used it. It worked very well and was a fun watch. Its what made the 89 movie so much more amazing and revolutionary. Seeing Batman taken to a new height of seriousness. I will always enjoy the 60s movie for what it was. Reminds me of my childhood and more innocent times.

@@DocMicrowave as a kid, I loved the adam west tv shows/series (not sure if I ever fully saw the movie or not), but it's difficult to watch it now... I tried... but being a lot older now, laughs, I notice the dialogue of the characters and etc stuff, and it's really bad/corny... though I do still like the unique "comic dialogue bubbles" (pow, wham, etc)... but that's about it for positives, just a lot of nostalgia, it was good at the time, seeing it as a kid, but it doesn't hold up today, and when I'm much... older, for me anyways...

@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 lol, yeah I remember watching the series on TV. It was one of the most interesting things on TV, till I discovered SciFi. Star Trek, Space 1999, UFO, etc. Back when TV was far more interesting than it is now. I agree, watching 60s Batman is I little rough on the eyes and ears. But as long as it is watched through a comedic, nostalgic lens, it can be seen. (Not that I am eager to watch it anytime soon.)

“Wait, this didn’t happen in Joker!” - Word of advice, NEVER try to link one Warner/DC superhero movie with another, since they’re basically making each one up as they go along. For the record, this would be the most canonically “correct” Batman origin, where the Joker fell into a vat of chemicals, while Joker was just a cheap pretentious attempt to pick Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” bones.

9:03 Yeah, Batman has a bad habit of disappearing when people are talking to him. Gordon even gets annoyed with it in "Batman the Animated Series" (he's already working with Batman in the first episode) commenting each time Bruce disappears mid-sentence. "Someone needs to put a bell on that guy.." or "...One of these days, I'm going to nail his feet to the floor.." 😂

The comics have been around for over 80 years, so there have been just as many changes to them as with the films (more, perhaps). So, even when something is based on the comics, it can be wildly different from one film to the other. *Batman's* story changes with each writer. Sometimes only a little. Sometimes a lot. The great thing about it IMO, is that such diversity virtually provides a *Batman* for everyone. Another example we have is with the *Joker.* In this film, we know who he is. In most stories, he's a mystery. In some he was first a bad guy named _the Red Hood._ And even in that story, there are variants wherein he was a comedian that simply wore _the Red Hood's_ costume the night he fell into the chemicals. 🤷🏼‍♂️ *Batman* kills in one iteration. And in another, he doesn't. It's all fluid. 37:47 *Marian* noted that this *Joker* wasn't psychotic until after the acid. But *Detective Eckhardt* (that crooked cop) did say that *Jack* was _"an A-1 Nut Job"_ long before the acid accident. So he appears to have been a little unhinged already. *EDIT:* Btw, when this came out it was *HUGE!* ··•●🦇●•··

This Batman is closest to the original Batman comic that came out in 1939 and became a series in terms of color and atmosphere and it's my favorite because of that. The Nolan films take themselves so seriously that I can't stand them. Joker with Joaquin Phoenix is excellent though although its take is completely new and is heavily influence by 2 Martin Scorsese films, Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Great reaction. I think you'll like the next one as well, Batman Returns.

Agree about the Nolan films - they're praised as being "realistic," but to me they're pretty drab and boring. There's no real personality to Gotham, and to many of the characters. There are a lot of contrivances and plot holes that routinely get ignored. A lot of the writing feels forced and pedantic, speaking to the audience in the language of pretty basic pseudo-psychology. It's the old adage of show, don't tell - Nolan mostly tells, but Burton shows the complexity of the characters and world.
