Near certain it was in the original screenplay... The scene was longer and had Joker kidnap Vicki after he shot bruce to attend the unveiling of a statue in Gotham Square (which turned out to be a Joker statue). Bruce follows the Joker, Vicki and his goons on horseback to save her. I believe in one draft Dick Grayson (Robin) was in this deleted scene and the Joker kills his parents...
@brucechmiel79643 жыл бұрын
@@shamrockballs1066 The scene was not even filmed. It was storyboarded. They even got TAS voice actors to voice the scene on the dvd/Blu ray.

@@brucechmiel7964 Yes, that's right, a version of it also exists in the novelization, which are usually based on early versions of the script. And production did produce a statue of the Joker, but as you say it was never filmed. You can even hear the news anchors in one scene mention the unveiling of the statue.
@shamrockballs10663 жыл бұрын
@El Vato yes on horseback 😂 it's been a while since I watched the animated story board as pointed out above, but I did read the novelization again recently. From what I remember : Bruce is wearing his utility belt under his shirt and thats what saves him. From Jokers bullet. Joker takes Vicki hostage and they get into a van Bruce radios alfred to bring his batsuit, he persuses on horseback Joker gets to the unveiling and highjacks it. Batman shows up and Joker takes the mayor hostage so that he can escape. I think his goons start gunning people down also. I'm glad this was left out also, it sounds too ridiculous and all took place during the day. Tbh even in the movie I don't particularly like that scene in the apartment. It lags for me, possibly because it is during the day, but it is an important scene I suppose and I like the Alicia mask part.

I like how you kept laughing at how Batman's costume didn't let him move his head, and it'll be 5 more movies and 3 more actor swaps before he finally gets a costume that lets him. As for how DC keeps going, they didn't really have a continuous universe like the (modern) Marvel films back in the day, so whenever they changed producers or directors they would occasionally reboot everything. So every Batman, every Joker, every Alfred, every character you see in the films get reinterpreted every couple of movies or so, and their origin stories and characterizations differ. If you want to see a Batman origin movie, Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (and subsequent trilogy) is a good one.

Scissorhands is the most Tim Burtoniest Tim Burton Movie (Nightmare Before Christmas is a close second). But what makes ES so Burton is that it's not based on any existing thing, just inspired by all the things Burton loves, so it's just his own thing. Even NBC is Burtons 'version' of some holidays. Batman '89 is a good all around introduction to Batman, but it's very much Burton's version of Batman. Batman Returns is... Burton's version of a movie he would make after he is finished filming a Batman movie and the costumes and sets are left over so he films a bunch of crazy crap with them in it. Please let Batman '66 be your introduction to the Penguin and not Batman Returns, haha.

It's important to note that at the time of this movie's release, comic book movies were not a thing at all, nor was there much experience in the film industry on how to make a super-hero movie(what tone do we shoot for? who is our target audience? how do we build the proper suit? etc). In addition, this movie definitely has the Tim Burton feel(dark and a bit weird) without being too much Tim Burton, probably because he was still an up-and-comer in the industry, and thats probably why they let him direct this movie as well. On top of all that, the corporate side of development was unsure if this movie would even come close to being a success, and had little faith in the end product. As it turns out, this Batman was a HUGE success and started a chain of events which led to many other movies being made.

The first Supes was excellent at the time, but does it hold up? Haven't watched it for years. I still enjoy the hell out of 1989 Batman, but it does show its age some, and she's absolutely right that it could've used some additional editing. At the time though, a 2-hour summer blockbuster was pretty standard - big, anticipated movie = gets away with a long runtime. I think anyone coming into superhero movies now would have a *very* hard time appreciating the Reeves Superman movies or Burton's Batman films. Absolutely fantastic, mind-blowingly good movies when they came out, but we had a LOT of absolute garbage to compare them with. Remember the earlier Batman tv show and film? 1970s Hulk and Captain America? These movies are fondly remembered for good reason, but watching them mixed in with modern superhero movies doesn't do them any favors, sadly.

Ok, I love that you picked up on Knox opening his trunk by banging on the hood. This is a character thing that they used to do in movies a lot & it's always stuck with me as just a beautifully efficient way to communicate character to the audience. One thing about action movies from the 80s & 90s is that they are incredibly well paced, the screenplays are always extremely efficient. One of the techniques, or shorthands they would use would be something like this where a character opens or activates something in a non-standard way, a way that you could only have known if that object belonged to you. In that one small scene we see that Knox must have had this busted ass car for ages in order to know exactly where to hit the trunk to open it. We can infer that his shitty car is because he's never made much money as a journalist but what does Knox do when there is literal money flying about all over the place ? He tries to help. He doesn't try & grab money and WE'VE SEEN HIS CAR, HE COULD USE THE MONEY, he gets his bat (he gets a bat, he's "Batman", get it ?) & tries to help. Knox is a good guy & we get that communicated effectively & efficiently in 8 seconds of screentime.

I was in middle school that year. For my money middle school is the ideal time for this movie to take the world by storm.

I hope you're gonna do Batman Returns with Michelle Pfeiffer's iconic Catwoman portrayal.

They call out the suit design in the Dark Knight movies when they specifically talk about being able to move his head at one point.

The cheese factor of this movie is not as high as the cheesiness of the 1960's TV show.

omg I can only imagine the cheese in the show

Adam West (RIP) will always be Batman. Ashleigh should watch Batman: The Movie from 1966. D.C. would be wise to reboot Batman as a P.G. movie with lots of schlock.

@@awkwardashleigh The show (and mid 1960s movie based on it) was hilarious. Like Airplane!, no stone unturned.

Ashleigh: “How do they keep making DC movies? They wrapped it up so nicely.” Any comic ever: “Hold my beer….”

Never have I clicked on a video faster. By far, one of the greatest Batmans ever, and the amount of crap that Michael Keaton took before this movie came out was incredible. He knocked this out the park, down the road, past the dam and over the Batman signal.

*Multiplicity* is a super underrated comedy starring Michael Keaton and Andie MacDowell. I think you would really enjoy it. Kim Basinger and Dan Aykroyd starred in the hilarious comedy My Stepmother is an Alien, one of my favorite childhood movies.

The thing they were using for the newspaper articles was a microfiche. They had old records of newspapers that you could look through for articles from old issues. Some libraries still have them, I remember using them a few times when I was younger, before the internet could be used to look up sources.

@Olaf Andersson I actually miss card catalogues sometimes, the computer version just isn't the same. I got really good at finding books in the library and using the copier for reference materials. I know the teachers took a long time to let us use info from the internet for papers because of all the false sources on the internet.

The one unfortunate thing in this movie is that they cast Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent, who in the comics, becomes the villain, Two Face. While Two Face does eventually appear in this film series in Batman Forever, he is not played by Billy Dee Williams, but instead by Tommy Lee Jones.

It's refreshing watching reactions to movies like this around here. Sometimes it's hard to remember, hey, some people don't know what Batman's powers are. Some people don't know what his origin is. Some people don't know what the butler's name is. And that's okay, because the fun is in the discovery.
