Everybody always points out how it's Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman) playing the part of Penguin's father. However, most people usually don't catch the fact that the mother was also the woman who played Simone, from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. One could imagine that, after Pee-Wee gained fame and fortune from the movie of his story, he dumped Dottie for Simone, and they had "The Penguin." :D

Also worth noting that this was Reubens first film credit since his Theater "scandal". Originally it was planned for Cobblepot Sr. to be played by Burgess Meredith, who was Penguin in the 60's show. Meredith became ill so wasn't able to do the scene, so Burton reached out to Reubens, in part to help him get his foot back in the industry's door.

Two ways to read the Catwoman origin. First, she hits like 5 awnings on the way down, which theoretically could have slowed her descent enough where she survived and she just went nuts from the almost murdered/tired of being a doormat thing (or a head injury). Or second, the spirits of the cats resurrected her and now she literally has 9 lives. Works either way for me. But I love how, when she gets back to the apartment, she literally has cat-like traits. Knocking crap off of tables and not caring, shredding toys into nothing, etc.
@drudle

Exactly this. I always thought it was the first, but she thought the second. She just went crazy and believed the spirits of the cats revived her/turned her part cat/imbued her with the spirits of the cats/whatever, lmao.

So Burton's Penguin is basically nothing like the comics Penguin. In the comics, Oswald Cobblepot does come from an affluent Gotham family, so he's much less of a horrible sewer goblin, and more of a mob boss. He comes to power by filling the vaccuum left after Batman successfully dissolves the original mobs of Gotham in his first year. He's had quirkier gimmicks in his history, usually involving penguin-themed vehicles or tech, as well as an arsenal of umbrella weapons, and has even eaten a raw fish or two. Modern Penguin doesn't have as many silly quirks, but is more of a serious gangster, using his vast wealth and army of goons to run Gotham's underworld from his base of operations, a floating casino named The Iceberg Lounge.

The regular comic book Catwoman is just a "cat burglar" who was extra fond of cats and of course had a costume with ears and mask. The more "campy" eras of the comic, and especially the old '60s TV show, went all-in on her being a cat-themed villain, purring while she talked, cat-themed car, etc. But mostly she's an extra-acrobatic cat burgler/anti-hero, and sometimes not even a villain.

Fun fact that makes sense once you know: In one of the writer's earlier drafts, Shreck was discovered to be the Penguin's older brother, the "Golden Boy" of the Cobblepot Family, whereas the Penguin was the deformed outsider. Shreck was supposedly ashamed of his father, after he threw his baby brother into the sewer, and he emancipated himself from the Cobblepot Family as soon as he came of age. This may have resulted in him being cut off from his family fortune, thus forced to make his own as mentioned above. Knowing that, makes the whole "First born son" thing all the heavier.

I'm a Keaton/90s Batman Animated Series guy. Somewhere along the line, watching Keaton's Batman horrified that his Batmobile is destroying cars and property on the roads unintentionally became standard operating procedure in the Bale Bat-tank version b/c they were simply in his way and the "zomg that was total awesomeness bruh" factor. Full disclosure: But i can't really fault it. I'm not sure when Batman started using massive bombs to take down big guys. Watching the Batmobile pop mini-guns and seeing Batman fire guns and rockets at the Joker in the first one was probably the start of the downward spiral. I just keep telling myself, "Alternate universe." It's the only excuse that keeps fans sane watching the difference between the comics, movies, cartoons, etc. Like my father said, "My Batman isn't your Batman." Love the channel!

I watched this in the cinema when I was 12.... yup... Also, Batman didn't have security on the Bat mobile because he never thought people would be in a position to do what Penguin did. Overconfidence is something that this Batman suffers from a lot. I don't think Selina has "powers" as such, she's just a human who went nuts after barely surviving an attemped murder by her boss. Great movie, great reaction! Don't bother with the others though, this is the shark jump.

I feel like it's a bunch of myths about animal spirits possessing people kinda cobbled together to insinuate that her soul was possessed by the cats or changed into a cat's soul which she already had a high affinity to cats in the first place so they gave her their "power". It's a similar underlining motive or concept to The Crow. But then again the fall causing some brain trauma and changing her personality is not unheard of either and is known to cause some rather extreme behavior changes immediately or shortly afterward sometimes even permanently after happening. Since it's a movie they may have half thrown in a fugue state as well which is normally when a person loses most of their memory temporarily and create a random new identity from whatever information is left. All of their normal background history could be wrong in this state. House, street, age, gender, career, trips and even state they live in could be wrong.

Danny DeVito's acting, and makeup by legends Stan Winston, Ronnie Specter, and Ve Neill (who was also responsible for Burton's Edward Scissorhands), make this Penguin so spectacular. Funny sometimes, disgusting sometimes, and actually extremely scary when he needed to be. [edit, after 28:30] If this were to have been a Batman / Catwoman only film, the plot would need to be very different. The way this was set up, Catwoman's main reason for being anti-Batman is because of the entanglement of the Penguin. Her moral ambiguity pulled her between villain and anti-hero. As George very astutely observed from the poster: Catwoman sits between Batman and Penguin. It was that pull in either direction that made her story rather compelling. Without that element (that I don't feel that Schreck alone would have filled; his villain's role was not to the same level as Penguin. Batman needs more colorful adversaries) the moral ambiguity would not have had the same impact. IMHO. I agree that I would have liked to have seen more of Selina's story. But as it played out, I feel it worked as it should have done. She had a vendetta against Max, and fulfilled it. Too much more would have complicated things. Tim Burton's direction for this film made it just as good as the first one. Maybe even a little more over the top, but it still worked. He declined to participate in a third, and further installments in this franchise were famously never nearly as good. Different actors in the Bat-suit, different directors at the helm, theoretically all still in the same universe and continuity, but they went far afield after this. Only loyal old Alfred (Michael Gough) stuck around.

YESSS. This is my favourite Batman movie to this day. Burton did an incredible job. Penguin is one of DeVito's best character roles, and the gothic energy of this film is so accurate to the comics at the time that it was really like seeing a Batman story on screen. Michelle did an unbelievably great job at Selina, and the music in this film is superb-- A great soundtrack by Danny Elfman. 10/10

As iconic and cool as the shot is of the bat-signal shining through Bruce Wayne's office on him, it does beg the question of whether or not he covers those light-signals when he has guests over. I mean, the first movie establishes that he hosts big galas for Gotham's elite, and in this movie he invites Selina Kyle over for an evening together. If the Commissioner lights the signal, and those things activate while company is over, Bruce has hella explaining to do lol.

One of the things I've seen/heard is the idea that the masked vigilante/superhero (I believe it typically is specifically Batman) actually CAUSES the rise of crime and supervillains because of their presence. An interesting thing to remember about Michael Keaton playing Batman, he was the first actor to have distinct voices for both Bruce Wayne and Batman. It seems pretty normal now but that wasn't the case before he took on the role and it was his idea to have it that way.

There's 2 theories about Catwoman I've heard over the years since this movie was released in the 90s. #1 is the one that was going around back when the movie was first released. 1: when she fell she died and the cats swarmed around her giving her one of their lives to bring her bsck to life. 2: 5he awning canopies she hit on thd way down was enough to slow her decent to where it just mearly knocked her unconscious. The cat around her woke her up but due to her hitting her head it caused a split personality with cat traits came out with revenge on her mind for almost "murdered".

I think, to some extent, the idea was to give Catwoman a form of borderline personality disorder. So after she falls and injures her head, and has a mysterious moment of being revived by the cats, she fixates on and absorbs the personality of the cats, including the idea that she has 9 lives. Obviously there's something mystical going on, that's not explained, because at one point when she screams in anger she breaks the glass in a greenhouse. It's mysterious, dramatic, and ... doesn't need explanation.
@karabearcomics
@karabearcomics 4 ай бұрын
I like the interpretation of Catwoman that there's nothing supernatural that happens with her. When she was pushed out the window, she goes through a few awnings, which break her fall enough that she survives. The cats aren't reviving her, but she wakes up because of the pain of them gnawing on her. From here, she's in shock (hence the zombie-like aspects to her movements), leading to a mental breakdown, which causes her to change her entire personality due to the near-death experience (and she thinks of it as an actual-death experience). Every "death" after is also reasonably survivable (even if the fall into the greenhouse is dubious--people survive falls like that in movies all the time). Even when Schreck shoots her, it's not in any vital organs. The hardest to explain is the electrocution, but it's possible that what really killed Schreck is the wire she grabs and she got knocked from him before the wire touched him, leaving her with at only some burns on her tongue from the taser. This movie may not have done so well, but I've enjoyed it since it first came out. Too bad it led to the awful Catwoman movie (CineCringe candidate right there), but that's hardly the fault of Batman Returns. Instead, blame development hell and that sort of thing.
