I appreciate the honest take on the film for you. I grew up watching this movie and have always enjoyed it I know I has some flaws but for me personally I always ignore it because of what this movie meant to me as a child. I got an autographed photo of Michael Keaton in his Batman suit. I’m always able to throw this movie on and enjoy it I don’t compare it to other Batman movies because it was simply my first Batman man especially when you compare it to the Nolan films obviously the story writing in that is flawless compared to this. Thanks again for the great review 👍🏻

I’ve been waiting for so long for you to review the older Batman movies. This is great! I wrote this comment before watching the review and while I disagree with some of your points, I can kinda see where you’re coming from. I don’t think it’s a perfect movie but imo it’s one of the best Batman’s along with Batman Returns. Great video tho!

I still love this film, always have and always will. And yes, I can acknowledge its flaws and can admit that newer Batman films are better. But I've loved the film ever since I was a kid. It was one of my first introductions to the character, the other being Batman the Animated Series. I also really like Jack Nicholson as Joker. Regardless, I appreciate you giving this movie another chance, even if you don't care for it that much. :)

I would’ve liked to have seen a third one with Tim Burton. I know they were going to use Marlon Wayans as Robin. Billie Dee Williams was meant to return, becoming Two-Face. Robin Williams as The Riddler and Brad Dourif as Scarecrow were meant to be in it too. Those are all really interesting casting choices and I would’ve liked to have seen Burton’s take on those characters.

I may get in trouble for saying this, but I do like how Batman 1966 looked, and I do like some of the campy goofy moments (not all of it holds up as of 2022) as much as I like the more darker tone of Batman I am not a huge fan of how Batman can be in your face dark. I know I may get a lot of hate comments for saying that but here me out: my perfect version of Batman is where it is campy but goes serious when it needs to (much like the Sam Rami spiderman trilogy). Overall I hear why people may hate Batman 1966, but I do like how vibrant that version of Batman is. Feel free to disagree with me, but just try to understand where I am coming from.

Nothing wrong with Batman 1966, i recently watched it for the first time in 20 years expecting it to be terrible, i loved it still and and it's my 4th favourite Batman movie after Batman Returns, Batman 1989, and the LEGO Batman movie.
@jacksample3978

Yeah I feel like people always overstate how campy it is. There are characters who literally die in the show and the villains are true threats in the show. Also people forget that these are made for kids, and it gets a decent portrayal of Batman

I did grow up with this film. I was born in 1987, and while I was only two when it first came out, I watched it a lot on video, along with Batman Returns. I admit that the movie is very flawed in many ways but, I can't help it; the two Burton movies and the animated series are the essence of Batman to me. It's one of those movies I always have a lot of fun watching and I doubt that will ever change. Honestly, knowing your mixed feelings about these older movies and Tim Burton in general, 3 out of 5 is a pretty good score.

If you were born in 87 I would say I thought you really didn’t grow up with this movie you didn’t release witness its release you weren’t old enough. This movie started the comic book movie craze! Not to mention the one-liners joker has, the explanation of his make up. And the scene so iconic when the bat wing flies up in the moons glow creating the bat symbol! And the finale jogger pulls out the freaking leg long gone, and then the long trek up the church tower to the final scene it’s great and it started everything

It is the first batman film I ever saw when i was 7 and my introduction to the Joker who I never heard of before. The only problem I have with it is joker "falling" for Vicki vale, don't care about any of that. Glad you can at least enjoy some aspects cuz it's the best out of the first 4.

Strapping myself in. I've been kind of avoiding this playlist because, though I'm someone who never really gets upset at bad takes over imaginary things, Batman has been such a crucial and consistent thing in my life that this may be the one to do it. lol I'm scholarly when it comes to the Batman mythos and history, so a lot of people are missing a lot of context and then pop off with some wildly inaccurate takes regarding him or his world, which gets my inner angsty teen twitching with frustration. Alright, let's do this.

I started watching Batman 1989, around the time Batman and Robin came out. It's been a childhood favorite of mine ever since. But after watching your review, Cody. Your right about this film. Nicholson is literally the lead star of the movie and that's my favorite thing about this movie. The rest of it has its moments. The ending of the movie, featuring Danny Elfman's incredible score is one of my favorite movie endings.

I will give the movie credit, having Joker technically be the man that created Batman, who then becomes the one to ultimately create The Joker, which is then a nemesis of his that seems to be tethered to him, always fucking with him, is a nice story element to the character. I always liked the idea that they had created their own nemesis’ within each other

IMO I think the movie is a good movie, however, I just can’t love it as much as I want to. Everything with the joker is spot on, Jack Nicholson does a INCREDIBLE job. On the flip side, Batman, outside of Michael’s excellent performance, doesn’t hit right with me, they got aspects right, but seeing him kill people without remorse just put a bad taste in my mouth (yes, I’m one of those Bat fans), especially when he DELIBERATELY dropped Joker into the acid pit, thereby creating him. I also wished we could of seen Batman do more detective work; he figures out Jokers plan off screen, which to me should of been a major plot development, but was treated like a after thought, honestly, Batman feels like a after thought throughout the movie. The entire plot just felt, meh, like, it feels like nothing really happens in the movie. That’s just my opinion, and I get why people love this movie, Tim burtons style is always a treat, and his version of Gotham is one of the most iconic places in cinema, at least to me. If I would have to give it a ranking, I’d say it’s a solid 7/10.

I think Batman 1989 in particular is still widely liked because of the positives you mentioned: Gotham City, Michael Keaton's Batman, and Jack Nicholson's Joker. And it's most likely the same way with Batman Returns and its characters, especially Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and Danny Devito's Penguin.

13:08 Yeah the story is pretty simple. Batman's trying to bring down Carl Grissom but while trying to catch Grissom's bodyguard Jack Napier Napier falls into a chemical vat and becomes The Joker. He then poisons people to get attention on him instead of Batman who finds out Joker killed his parents along the way.

I remember being 9 years old and seeing this in theaters and being blown away...30 years later nostalgia aside ..it doesn't really hold up to what it was in 1989. It was great for the time it was released in. This would not be as revered if released today. The whole thing about people complaining about Batfleck killing in those movies I always thought was ridiculous. This batman killed more than that version. Hell even Christopher reeves superman killed General zod and his minions in superman 2. So that argument about man of steel holds no merit

I love this movie but I completely understand and even agree with your points. When you mentioned the story, I tried to think in my head how to describe the plot, and it’s pretty difficult, lol. Mostly it’s just Jack Nicholson chewing scenery and Michael Keaton being awesome. It’s definitely a style over substance movie, but in my opinion, the style is so damn good that it doesn’t matter. I was born in 1985, and even though I was little, I remember how much of a cultural phenomenon it was.

But now looking at it when I was 20 I noticed that this film has amazing set designs, amazing Music, amazing performance of the joker, and most importantly for me THE AMAZING PERFORMANCES OF MICHAEL KEATON. But that's it. The story is not that amazing. The perfect words to describe this film is "Style over Substance." Great review. I appreciate your point of view and understand the criticisms. Myself, being 6 in 89, this blew me away watching it a theater with a pack crowd. For some people, there isn't enough Batman and the story wasn't meaty enough. I've always loved the "less is more approach to the use of Batman. Batman is at his most mysterious in the movie and I've always enjoyed that aspect. There are a lot of nods to Batman 66 which I loved as kid, and still enjoy for what it is. And this always felt to me like a darker adaptation of Batman 66. The dutch tilts a in certain moments. Joker defacing paintings in a museum was from a Batman 66 episode. Even when he using his bat-arang in the opening of the film on the two tweaked out muggers, it opens up the same as the Adam West bat-arang. Nicholson is my favorite Joker. The bat suit, the music score of course Gotham City itself is perfect and right from the pages of the comics. I even like the pacing of the movie. That's why the moment Batman comes through the glass in the museum, it's so damn exciting. Not to mention the best damn batmobile ever. I've always loved this movie. I might be biased, but the impact of when this movie his was strong, and my generation still feels it to this day.

A darker and grittier version of batman was what the franchise needed at the time. Aside from the comics all there was was the TV version which didn't quite scratch that itch for fans.. the world wasn't ready form the Nolan versions in the 90s It could also be argued that without this film. The Nolan versions might not have happened at all nor became as popular as they were. Jack Nicholson made the joker a sought after role and changed the way that character was viewed forever

Something I noticed while watching Batman Begins the other day and it has to do with the inability to move the head. When Bruce rescues Rachel and brings her back to the cave and is watching over her, he removes the cowl. This is before he joins his birthday party. Just lifts it off his head. Which made me think, "why does he need his head to turn in The Dark Knight when it's clearly not attached? Maybe the movement is weird for him, but I just had that, "wait a minute moment."

I saw this twice at the cinema in 89 when it opened. It really was a phenomenon and a product of marketing genius: t shirts, orchestral score, Prince's ssoundtrack and all the extra paraphernalia. The movie itself is like a moving painting and oozes atmosphere with its incredible sets and accompanying score from Elfman. Batman himself and Vikki Vale are pretty dull but The Joker steals the movie. Cody is right about the story. It's dull. But I'm not a Batman fan anyway. In regards to Batman killing in this film, there are two justifications for it: 1. This film takes heavy influence from the earliest Batman comics from 1939-1940. Batman's rule against killing wasn't established until the end of 1940 (via editorial mandate, not the creators' choice). 2. In the mid-to-late 1980s, some of the writers were beginning to bend (or sometimes break) that rule. The rule became rather fuzzy during that decade before being strongly reaffirmed in the comics after the release of this film.

I love the twist how Joker creates the Batman and Batman creates the Joker. I enjoy the movie and love its set, music, performances, and action scenes. The story criticism are fair given that there were scripting issues during production (there was a writer's strike, at least 4 writers, plus studio interference and allegedly Tim Burton moving the production to the UK to avoid the notorious Jon Peters). Still, I think the movie's strengths do outweigh its script-story issues, unlike Batman vs Superman (which struggled due to them, along with a serious miscast with Lex Luthor and studio-mandated scene/story cuts). I happen to have massive story issues with Casino Royale, which is why I like that movie far less than Bond fans and movie critics (and booed the movie when it ended while everyone else clapped when I saw it at theaters). So I feel your pain Cody on this one.

This is absolutely one of my favorite movies. I grew up with this movie and it still holds a lot of weight to me in my heart. I totally agree with your take on Gotham City itself being a character- something I never felt in The Dark Knight or The Dark Knight Rises. To me Gotham looked a lot better in Batman Begins. I’m also glad you appreciated Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Nothing you said in terms of criticism offended me in the least. I totally get it. Always appreciate your reviews Cody. Even when I don’t agree with them- that’s the beauty of any form of art. We all can appreciate different things and it doesn’t negate or take away from something if we like it and someone else doesn’t. Overall I think this was a very fair critique. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart- but I definitely understand the criticisms. Keep up the good work, Cody!

1989 I remember it was crazy, not a few people in line but try blocks and blocks of people , camping out side for a spot . I had to wait 2 weeks before I could walk in and see it. And it didn't disappoint. You have to remember Batman had never been put on a tv or screen as A dark vigilante, of course the fandom were for Jack The joker , they cheered loud for Jack and grew to love Michael as Batman. Say wht you will but this movie started it all , without it , you have shit. For me I still to this day believe Batman Dark Knight is the best super hero and Batman movie of all time and it will stay that way for a long long time. But 89 Batman you have to respect , times change and in 50 years people will say the same campy things about TDK, trust me they will . Batman 89 is a movie you can watch , have a few laughs and enjoy. I love The Nolan Batman movies but man do you ever need a lot of time. You can not just throw it on a lot cause it's to long. Batman89 it's a joy ride , short sweet and to the point .

I ADORE THIS MOVIE!!!!! Seriously this film has had such a huge impact on my life. As with all critics I respect everyone's opinion as we all have different tastes. Hey, look, you gave your honest opinion and that's all we as viewers should ask for. If we were all the same what a boring world that would be. Personally this is my second favorite Batman film after The Dark Knight (although if we are counting Joker and ZSJL that would be a little different).

I saw this movie in the theatre in NYC. It certainly hasn't aged well. I find it interesting that the TV Joker (Caesar Romero) commented that Jack Nicholson played the part too dark and serious. Not nearly as dark as Ledger would take it.

Oh man. I can’t wait for your Batman & Robin review lmao. I still like this film but I’m in mostly the same boat as you. Not a big Burton guy to begin with and despite me liking a lot of things about the film especially the look, I’m never all that interested in revisiting this film much.

You make some valid points. Burton has said he wouldn't know a good script if it hit him in the head (I say he gets it right half the time personally) and the script is weak and dated. It's entertaining, the cast is awesome, aesthetically powerful and that score is probably still the best of the genre ever. Not a masterpiece for sure but a good time for sure.

A few people here have said or implied that the reason you don’t dig it is that you weren’t around when it came out. I disagree. This movie came out when I was a kid. I watched it over and over. Had the VHS. Had the toys. Had the pajamas. But I agree with you 100%. I watched it a couple years ago for the first time in years, and it didn’t hold up for me. And it was mainly the story that was the issue. The plot in this film is all over the place. Parts of it make very little sense at all. So while I like Keaton and I love Nicholson (my favorite actor), I think this was a bit of a mess. Now, Elfman’s score IS Batman for me. So that’s the one thing the movie brings that I think is truly spot-on.

While I am a fan of the 1989 Batman, (especially Keaton as Batman) I think your criticisms are fair. It didn't have much of a plot. It relied on Keaton & Nicholson's performances of the two iconic characters. I love your point about the plot line being Batman vs Joker over Vicki's piece of ass. It made me laugh. That was pretty much it. I was 16 when this movie came out. I think I saw it about 4-5 times in the theater. I loved it, it does hold meaning to me, but again I think your criticisms are on point and fairly laid out. Good job Cody.

This film holds up on its own without the pop culture significance. It's a well made movie. Flawed for sure. But Burton and his crew crafted some truly memorable cinematic moments in this movie. Burton as a director understood the importance of the big moments. I love the Dark Knight. It's a better movie than Batman (89). But Batman 89 is a better comic book Batman movie IMO. The tumbler is awesome, but it does not compare to the first time you see the Batmobile in this movie. That music swell. The audience erupted. Same when he flies Bat Wing to silhouette the moon. It's just awesome. Comic book awesome. This film easily has the best Wayne parents death scene. "You ever dance with the devil in the pale moon light". Chilling. I could go on but I won't. Haha. Enjoyed the review as always.
