This teaser was famous for being rushed in the editing room to get something in theaters to hype the film up prior to release, hence why music is completely missing.

They were still shooting in London. That said, there had been multiple articles about Keaton's casting and the perception of a comedic actor as Batman. So, as you say, this was rushed to theatres for Christmas 1988. The reaction was something else, even to this fifth grader.

I love how absolutely *busted* the editing in this is, like I get the context that it was rushed out to calm people's nerves that it would be a comedy, and yet even completely devoid of music, narration, or competent editing it still kinda makes me want to watch the movie again. IIRC, producer Jon Peters cut this teaser himself, or at the very least, dictated the assembly to the editor. It's still brilliant in its simplicity - no music, no post-effects, no title. And for months, people chose what movie to go see simply out of whether or not this teaser was playing in front. Legend.

@@AngelofMusic04 I know the reference you’re making, yeah Jon Peters was sooo obsessed with that spider gimmick for that unmade Superman movie “Superman Lives”, I always had the kookiest ideas and they never made sense in the grand scheme of things. Eventually he got his dumb wish and put it in “Wild Wild West” (guilty pleasure of mine), and honestly I thought the steampunk spider looked kinda cool and the visuals effects oddly still looks good two decades later. Because of that bizarre thing he wanted he was ridiculed in the public eye and when he was interviewed for that documentary about the unmade film I can tell that he was lying about wanting a giant spider and a polar bear fight in “Superman Lives”, he was simply saving his own a$$. I’m also glad that he was banned from the set of “Man of Steel” because Nolan and everyone else knew how bad of a reputation he’s gotten.

I remember watching the original video that’s still up on KZbin, I was surprised about the background of this movie and the fan backlash it was receiving at the time. Fans were angered by the idea of Michael Keaton being cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman because they thought it be comedic like the 1966 Batman series starring Adam West and Burt Ward and of course the costume not being spandex but instead foam latex and all black minus the Bat Emblem they left its original colors alone, the studio was worried so they quickly made a teaser with the footage they had available to show the fans the look and tone of the film and they were hyped AF. Without this trailer existing then Batman (1989) wouldn’t have been a massive success and that no comic book films would ever get made like TMNT (1990), The Mask, The Crow, Spawn, Blade, X-Men, Spider-Man and many more.

As someone who absolutely loves the classic gray and blue costume in both the comics and in animation...I fully understand why the Adam West show was the last time it's ever been used in live-action. It looks gorgeous, but it would be a special FX nightmare. Sure, you could film Batman himself on a green screen, but characters who wear green (Robin, Poison Ivy, the Riddler) or ARE green in some way (the Joker's hair, Killer Croc's skin) would have to be filmed on a blue screen. The only way to have Batman occupy the same FX shots with them would be to sacrifice the blue in his suit in favor of black. And going with an all-black suit as Burton and later Schumacher did vastly simplifies the costume color issue because that suit can be filmed on any backdrop. Ultimately, the more monochromatic colors of live-action Batman were inevitable just for the needs of the FX work.

There was a huge amount of controversy over Michael Keaton's casting but the trailer put all that to rest. People who are not alive back then might not realize the absolute phenomenon that this movie became before it was released. The Batman logo was everywhere and when it opened it had by far the biggest box-office opening in movie history. It's a very strange movie though, I'm not sure how well it's held up. Last Crusade came out first on 5/24/89. Then this movie came out wide release on 6/23/89. the first summer blockbuster is usually given to "Jaws", released on June 20, 1975, with a fairly wide release (at the time) of 450 screens, extensive marketing, and becoming all-time the highest grossing film for two years (until 1977's Star Wars). I disagree that the Internet killed the summer blockbuster. The shorter window to home release and studios front-loading a release (4000+ screens, making the most money on the opening weekend and declining by 50%) have damaged it far more.

When I first saw the trailer I was young and I wanted to see the movie so bad that when it came out I was begging my father to give me enough for a ticket 🎟 at the theater and he didn't want to give me the money to see it he thought I was to old at the time to see it I wanted to see it so bad that I was in tears 😢 begging him to let me see it. We were at my grandmother's at the time and she told my father oh let him see it I'll give him the money back then I didn't know I was trans til I got older but thank you to my grandma.

It was made just to please the Batman fans to show them the tone of the movie. They were furious because of the casting, so Jon Peters released this teaser with all the footage he had available at the time. That was why the sound is kinda weirdly mixed here, the scenes were unfinished.

Why didn't they put music under this trailer? Never understood it. I know everyone lost their minds when it came out...but wouldn't they have lost their minds even more if this had some exciting music? Instead it just feels like a rough cut from the editor.
@AngelofMusic04
@AngelofMusic04 2 жыл бұрын
It was. When the project was first announced, people were furious because of Burton and Keaton; they assumed it would be another "Beetlejuice" instead of being the Batman they were hoping for due to the return of a darker Batman thanks to "The Killing Joke" and "The Dark Knight Returns". So the producers quickly edited a trailer together based on the footage they had available to calm people down. The plan worked as people paid to see "Tequila Sunrise" several times to see the trailer and then left before the movie started.

Think of this as a blessing in disguise. If it hadn't been for this teaser, the movie would possibly been bombed at the box office.

@@benwatson6729 hey they had to release a trailer for the movie sometime of later. You can’t just have a movie be released without a trailer. Either way if they didn’t rush out a trailer and had a trailer that wasn’t rush, fans protest against Michael Keaton as Batman still would have been stopped when the fans see his performance.

@@AngelofMusic04 Exactly Will, it was cobbled together by using the available footage they had since they were still in production in London at the time. Fans were livid at the casting of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman, so the studio was panicking so they ordered a trailer to be made ASAP. If it weren’t for this teaser then Batman wouldn’t have been successful and we wouldn’t see the rise of superhero films in the 90’s and 2000’s.

It actually was. They actually rushed this teaser because the media was making such a fuss about casting Keaton as Batman, so they had to change their minds somehow. They used whatever footage they had on hand, and, well, here we are.

@@timothy790110 It was rushed out with raw footage to counteract the negative buzz surrounding Michael Keaton's casting. When this trailer hit, people finally started getting excited for the movie because it wasn't going to be a repeat of *Beetlejuice* or an attempt to imitate the Adam West show. Just from the footage shown, this was clearly going to be a modern take on Batman and Keaton was going to be playing it straight. Without this trailer, the movie would likely have been crippled by angry fans with an axe to grind (as every live-action Superman not named Tom Welling has found out the hard way).

@@reidmason2551 Its still a godawful trailer. The reason was it was rushed, as you say. Its better than no trailer at all of course, but the way this is edited feels like something one would do as a lazy first project in elective editing class in high school. Its basically all the coolest scenes stacked next to each other. Its also the lack of music.
