This was the Batman movie that created Batman as everyone knows him in movies. It was a huge hit, a global blockbuster and had a huge cultural impact in terms of how superhero movies were made and marketed. This film set the template for what has followed. For that alone, it is a 9 out of 10 for me.

People have forgotten how big this movie was back in 89, it destroyed the box office and any movie released around it, even James Bond and Ghostbusters couldn't beat The Bat

Yeah, it's easy to forget just what another level of creativity and craftsmanship went into having to invent how to do the whole dark and twisted Batman in the first place. Before then it was only the comedy 60s tv show and that's all anyone really knew it as. Just as with Superman The Movie, they had to invent how to make it look like someone really was flying on screen as all that had been done before then were those 50s tv shows. Modern movies, sorry to say but it's just a fact, are treading water, repeating themselves endlessly and standing on the shoulders of giants.

FUN FACT: Billy Dee Williams was originally slated to play Two-Face in the third film. But when DC removed Butron as director to executive producer, Williams was cut from the film, and Tommy Lee Jones was cast. Many years later, the LEGO Batman film would come out, featuring Billy Dee Williams as the voice of Two-face. So in the end, he got to play the he was hired for.

My first job was as an usher at an AMC theater the summer Batman '89 opened. It was insane. We had five of our nine auditoriums showing Batman. There were two lines down the block. One with tickets and one waiting to buy. Madness!

"Ever Dance With the Devil In the Pale Moon Light?" Michael Keaton will always be my Batman and Jack Nicholson my Joker. No offense to the rest but they will always be the best. They were the first to take it into the darkness. The rest had this to build on. Rest in peace Heath.

That last visual with the bat signal and Batman.. I had a cake decorator put that in my son's birthday cake. She did an amazing job! Batman is a huge part of my family's lives. For over 50 years he has ruled! I am 56 and used to watch the TV show with my Dad and brothers. I eventually had 4 sons and we love super heroes.. Batman in particular. This movie was so incredible when it came out. It was the first one after the 60's TV show, so the world responded big-time! Great America marketed the crap out of these movies also with the introduction of the Batman ride. They had a full size Batmobile at the entrance. It was so great to be alive!

You have to remember, back then, the suit was designed with the cowl being one piece going from head to shoulder. Keaton couldn't move his head. But when my friends and I first saw it, we were all pumped by this movie. I waited in line for the preview Thursday night showing and had gotten there early to wait in line to get in. We took up a whole row with my work buddy's brother having to sit a row back. I saw it twice in theaters, bought the VHS, day one. Them processed to watch our a dozen more times.

Funny they laughed so hard at him looking around . Bc the suit gave him no neck movement. They fixed it in the flash movie but Keaton told them to make it stiff bc it became part of his movement he didn’t want to change it

I love this version of Gotham. Something I think that was lost over the years of Batman movies is illustrating how claustrophobic and messy the city is, to really hit home how it can be a den of crime and where the people feel jaded and hopeless.

You do have to know that the original Batman that Bob Cane worked in carried a gun. Fur the first 2 years, he did kill. It was after that DC comics wanted to soften Batman's image. After the introduction of Robin, that's when Batman became non-lethal.

You guys did a great job as always on your movie reviews! I heard you ask about what was "in the bag" when the Joker fell to his death from the church tower. Back in the 80s, many novelty stores sold a similar looking bag that were simply called, "Laughing Boxes". There was nothing inside the bag, except a plastic device with a pre-recorded laugh on it with a battery compartment to change batteries when the laughter stopped. There ends the ancient artifacts of the 1980s lesson. Ha Ha! :)

As a comic book fan (Marvel, DC, Image), and a huge Batman fan, loved Micheal Keaton as Batman, but I also love the other actors that have portrayed him. I really hate to say this one or that one's better, as they all have different things that make them better in some ways. This movie, and Batman Returns, STILL has the best Batmobile of all time, IMO. I also think the city looks more like the city does from the comics in the Burtonverse. Also, I think that Elfman's Batman theme song is still the greatest of all the Batman films themes. I love the colors on Batman's costume, but hate the fact that he couldn't really turn his head, and that he was a little small to be playing Batman. Here's where I'll get hate, I prefer Nicholson's joker, because it is actually more comic book accurate. Ledger did a good job, but he just played any other psychopath with face paint. Anyways, I saw this in theaters when I was 8 years old, still a great film.

So Many other performances, Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger..... I Enjoy how the Tim Burton Batman and Batman Returns have the comic book vibe Gritty balanced with over-the-top Comedy..... You twos absolute glee at the awkward movements was great. Keaton seriously could not move his head. And that remained a problem with just about any Batman film costume for awhile. Like, until The Dark Knight, and they even make it a little detail when they do find a way (Bruce has plans for suit upgrades which Fox looks over and says "you want to be able to turn your head." And while it's definitely funny, it oddly also works because he's forced to move in very non human ways, so it's sure to contribute to the supernatural explanation for his existence to crooks.

The only reason I went to go see THE FLASH movie was because Michael Keaton returning as Batman, first time he's donned the cape and cowl for the first time in 30 years. Warner/DC got a strong start on the big screen superhero movies in 1978 and 1981 with SUPERMAN and SUPERMAN II, then in 1989 and 1992 with BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS, with two lackluster and disappointing sequels to each, the really knocked it out of the park with Christopher Nolan's DARK KNIGHT trilogy, only to totally drop the ball hardcore by rushing the DCEU to the screen to try to compete with the MCU, but only made two really good movies, BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, the ultimate edition though, not theatrical, and WONDER WOMAN. Looks like they're back on the right track with THE BATMAN. Not only with the performance of Robert Pattinson, but also going back to Batman's original detective roots, but also making the movie a crime drama/serial killer thriller. I have high hopes for THE BATMAN PART II. The MCU has really started to falter since ENDGAME, with only the two good ones after that being the two SPIDERMAN movies, and the phenomenal DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE. And, I still think Ben Affleck deserved his own solo movie as Batman. But, here's to hoping that both studios return to form with making really good movies.

Believe it or not, Michael Keaton was actually panned by some people before the movie was even released because he was a stand up comedian and had done comedies before becoming Batman. A lot of people didn't like his casting. But in my view, he's the best Batman. We can debate whether this or Dark Knight are the best Batman movies ever, but Michael Keaton is perfect for this role. He's not overplaying it and making it obvious he's Batman as Bruce Wayne, but there are moments where he cracks and shows that he has some issues related to his parents' death. He's also the only guy who looks cool and sounds cool as Batman. He's not making a funny voice. And Tim Burton was the right guy in the 80s and 90s to do a Batman movie. It's just unfortunate that "concerned parents" whined and complained about Batman Returns, which hopefully you'll get to. It goes dark. That's all I'll say. Parents were not happy and it led to Batman Forever and then the worst superhero movie ever made, Batman and Robin. All because a bunch of whiny parents who grew up with far darker movies didn't think their kids should watch Batman Returns.

I cant believe that you guys haven't seen Tim Burton's Batman. Now that you mention it, I think Batman should throw the stolen stuff in the arms of the little boy from the beginning while his parents are fighting. And then fly away like the classic image from the Animated Series

Got to bear in mind the kind of storyteller Burton is. Realism isn't ever one of his goals. Expect gothic camp.
