The Puzzler in my opinion is one of the best one-off villains of the show. Perhaps that is because i love literature-themed villains but he isn't the worst, by a mile. There are far worse bad guys in this show than the Puzzler (cough cough Nora Clavicle cough cough Minerva cough cough) and at least the Puzzler was clever, cunning, had an alright trap and was actually competent. Is he better than the Penguin or the Joker? No. As much as I wanna put him on the top, he comes close second, next to all the beloved villains of the show, he only appears once. But that one time made me love him. Maurice Evans became one of my favourite actors because of that role and his voice.... Ooohhhh his voice. What I'm saying is, the Puzzler is a very competent one off villain for the show. He's not obnoxious, he's not too in-your-face (the bad kind of that, i love Riddler) and he quotes Shakespeare left right and centre. He is my top villain of the show, along the members of the United Underworld and nothing can change my mind

In my opinion, Lord Phinnias Fogg and Lady Penelope Pea soup were the worst Batman Villians, though having just watched these very episodes just last night I will say Puzzler does come off as more of a foppish con-man rather than a menacing villian. Just a thought, but have you ever done a spot on the subliminal humor in the Batman Series? For instance I watched the Shame Episode where he's hiding out at laughing Louie's used car lot. Before the Batmobile arrives, Laughing Louie is selling a little old lady a hotrod. The Lady remarks that she came all the way from Pasadena to buy the car. It was the first time I caught that joke which was a nod to the Jan and Dean song.😁

I'd completely forgot about her. She could have been a far more menacing villian with better writing. The plot to replace the entire Gotham force with women with her as Commissioner started out interesting, but the bit about using the mechanical mice to then paralyze said force so she could loot the city because of course all women are sooo scared of mice, ugh!😧 If they had cut that bit out and just had her use the exploding mice to get into every part of the city and either use the threat in some plot to extort the cities seemingly endless supply of millionaires, or exploded them and used the resulting commotion to loot the city. She could have been a far better Villian.

I don't know if he was the worst, but he was certainly one of the more confusing in terms of how his character was put together. He had the Shakespearian actor theme, AND the puzzle/riddle theme, AND the aviation theme - it was too much! None of his three motivations had anything to do with each other! What they should have done was make an aviation-themed villain, and have him send clues - lots of crooks on the show did that; it wouldn't have stood out at all. (And for the record, they didn't, strictly speaking, create the Puzzler. He was a Superman villain who predated the show by at least a decade or so. True, he's completely different the way they used him; they might as WELL have created him, but it was still more of a repurposing than a creation.)

Hi it's me Arthur. LONG STORY. Here is the thing,I don't think the puzzler was necessarily a bad character but I think he was based a little bit too much on the Riddler. I'm not saying he copied the riddler but like if they had a character that was a Harliquin its going to remind people of The Joker. People weren't going to like him. Also the writing of that episode. They combined the stories of The Sand Man Bookworm and when The Penguin was trying to marry that rich woman just to get her money. They took aspects from all 3 of those episodes and put him in it. He was a good actor. I think they atleast could have gotten something out of him if they made a new character for him and the writing was more original. Or atleast had a chance too. Maybe the audience still wouldn't have liked him? Who knows?

Rick, Love your channel. As always, great content. One point of fact. If memory of this episode serves me correctly, the Artemis Knab character's last name was pronounced "KUH-nab." The last name was Bank spelled backwards. Now, as for this villain, it was a real disconnect that the Puzzler was involved in aviation. Made no sense. Given that Maurice Evans was a trained Shakespearean actor, and that the Puzzler always quoted the Bard, he should have concocted Shakespeare-themed crimes (a la Vincent Price in "Theatre of Blood"). Agree, not a very menacing character. Although I recall being scared about the hot air balloon trap at the cliffhanger. And I think that was only one of the few times that the cliffhanger was filmed, at least in part, outside a sound stage. As for being THE WORST villain...well, he's probably in my bottom five. Nora Clavicle was pretty bad too. But, for me, and I'll probably catch heat for this, in my view, John Astin's Riddler performance was THE WORST. Given how brilliant Gorshin was as the Riddler, Astin's performance was forced, uncreative, and just not very believable. But, alas, Gomez will be his happy legacy. Thanks for bringing up this topic. Please, more Batman content, Rick!! Best, Paul+

I love John Astin as Gomez Addams but he did the WORST Riddler.

Totally agree, A/C... Check out my comment on this episode.

You see I don't necessarily agree. I think people just liked Frank Gorshin and they projected that onto John Astin. Was Frank Gorshin better? Yes by lightyears but nobody was gonna be liked as that character following him. Take the biggest movie star then who knows Clark Gable whatever. Make him The Joker. Nobody is going like anybody not Ceasar Romero.

Interesting video, Rick. The puzzler was ok. In my personal opinion, I think Shame the cowboy villian was the silliest Villan in the Batman series. They consider him a threat. But I didn't think so. He seemed kind of dumb at times. Gave the series a Western flair to it I guess. Take care.

Hadn't the comics created Cluemaster yet by the time this show was airing?

The Puzzler was cool. Nora Clavicle, Dr. Cassandra, the Archer, the Minstrel were lame!

It was an average episode. An average villain. Similar to the Liberace villain. Just there.

wow, i watched the show as it originally aired and over and over in reruns- i dont recall this episode (maybe i didn't enjoy it, follow it, or regard the puzzler as a threat to Gotham City or the caped crusaders. I'll have to try and catch this episode. its rated well on imdb. I liked Mr Evans in The Planet of the Apes.

Glad to say I haven't heard of him, and I'm sure there were worse villains than King Tut, but I never did like him, it's just dumb.

I think John Astin as the Riddler was as bad as the Puzzler...maybe because I loved Frank Gorshin as the original Riddler!!

puzzler is kind of underrated, feels like a lot of people hate him simply because he's not riddler but I think he stands out on his own just fine

I watched the Batman series when it first came out. I can't remember this guy though. Mind it was a long time ago. Thats my excuse.

False Face was bad as well as the Siren who was Joan Collins- I think.
@PaulTesta4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Joan Collins was the Siren. I thought she was one of the better villainesses.
