the ''don't add me to the weight you carry'' line is so fucking great, it comes naturally and yet it's poetic - and it's the perfect way to verbally expose the essence of the series main conflict AND one of the character of Batman's main conflicts in any media; exposition is given so much shit, but it is a necessary evil, however, this makes it work it goes hand in hand with why Batman of all comic books characters SHOULD NEVER kill: who better than him, the one that is what he is and does what he does for the sole reason of having lost the people he loved the most, can understand the implication of removing a human life, no matter how wretched and vile is the person whose that life belongs to and for all the many, many flaws Arkham Night has, centering Jason Todd and exploring the way Joker stayed with Batman even after his death is perfect to represent it. Joker is there not just because it's Joker, but because a life taken was added to the weight Bruce carries, like Jason. do I think the twist is silly? hell yeah, have I seen coming from a mile away just like anyone that have read one entry on Batman wiki? of course. would I make the Red Hood the villain from the get go, without the silly twist? obviously. would I center the scarecrow as one of the main villains? no. would I do the ''identity reveal'' thing? totally no. BUT STILL, the themes are there. I would personally make the confrontation between Batman and Jason Todd way early in the game, so they could explore better the possible amendments between them. Have the militia splits in the absence of their general and contractor pledge their services to other minor villains and/or start doing their own thing like many splinter warlords factions to assure for the payment they now know they wont get for the latter half of the game, so we can see Jason and Bruce trying to take on them together, the difference between their views, and how trying to make Jason less of a villain can mirror Bruce fighting with his own inner Joker transformation.

Much of what you said here reminds me a great deal of the Star Wars prequels. Those films tell a fantastic and masterful story that (due to imperfect execution) is often under appreciated by the general audiences. But the prequels are superb because they tell you the origin of Anakin Skywalker. Just as Arkham Origins tells you the genesis of Batman the hero, the prequels are there to tell you the genesis of Darth Vader the villain. It takes the iconic and established character of Darth Vader and deconstructs him so you can see exactly how this Sith Lord's identity is constructed. You see a boy who was a slave, who's only constant source of love is his mother. You see the roots of his attachments and why he is so afraid to lose them. It is because Anakin is worried those attachments are all he has and that selfish desire to preserve them is his fundamental flaw. And this selfish desire is in direct conflict with the Jedi's own ideology of selflessness. So when Anakin dreams of his wife's and unborn children's deaths, his fears about losing become his reality. They define him and when confronted with choosing between the Jedi and his own attachments he sides with his attachments. This is why he joins the Sith, because they too only value the hedonistic aspects of the material world. They relish in attachment and feed off of fear so Anakin is the perfect fit. And the consequences of all this is Anakin hoping to exterminate the Jedi because he worries they will stand in his way. He even hundreds including children and even though he knows this is wrong he still goes through with it because his fear of loss is greater than his value of morality. And when Padmé ends up dying regardless due to his own actions, Anakin breaks down. He becomes a slaves to the Dark Side and the immoral choices he made. There is nothing left for him now so he continues down the path of evil. It takes Luke to save him because Luke represents the family he was attached to. Anakin's redemption is about finally valuing the morality of protecting his family over the fear and control of the Dark Side. Anakin finally lets go of all he fears to lose (including his own life) to do the right thing in the face of all the evil he committed. This is all an extremely powerful message bolstered in ways only a prequel could. I sense you see similar value in Arkham Origins. It gives so much to a defined relationship and adds to the stories of the Batman's future just as the prequels do for Anakin.

Tbh, these games focused on an aspect of Batman that isn't really dwelled on in the movies. And that aspect, is *Batman.* The Burton movies gave a good introduction to a darker Batman for general audiences, but he was outshined by his villains. The Schumacher movies focused more on appealing to kids and the character ended up pretty bare-bones and chessy. The Nolan movies arguably came the closest to representing the character, but didn't go far enough, and once again he was outshined by the villains. The DCEU had a good concept for a broken Batman piecing himself back together, but it was executed terribly. These games had almost everything, the accuracy, the complexity, the flaws, the fighter aspect, the detective aspect, etc. The only major thing they were missing was Bruce Wayne, he had very little screen time and he never really stood out. It's kind of surprising how with the amount of Batman movies there are, we haven't gotten a *true* live action Batman yet. I'm hoping Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson can pull it off. Edit: Also I disagree on the plot-twist. While the origin of Batman and Joker's relationship is done very well, the way it was introduced was terrible. Black Mask is an awesome villain and this game just treats him like a joke. And considering the fact that this game came right after City where they *killed* Joker, it just feels strange setting up a fresh new main villain for Batman only to reveal it was the Joker the whole time...
@strictly27555 жыл бұрын
You're 100% right.
@DigitalArctic5 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the whole series treats Black Mask as a joke really. His only appearance in Arkham City (Outside of Challenge Map DLC) showed him being beaten up by Tyger guards in the intro and then he's never seen again, no one in the prison seemed to care about him. In Arkham Knight he's one of the few villains, (who are still alive) to be completely absent in the Attack on Gotham City. I mean, Zsasz took advantage of the chaos and killed a bunch of people before the sun went down, he can be seen skulking around the alleys of Gotham on the Clock Tower security footage. Even Calendar Man showed up to watch what happens to Wayne Manor. What did Black Mask do? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. He was randomly hunted down and killed by Red Hood after the story though. The only time in the whole Arkham Series where he's treated as a force to be reckoned with, someone whos on par with the Joker or Penguin, was in Arkham Origins Blackgate of all things. A handheld spinoff game that's probably not even cannon. At least they were consistent I guess...

If a Batman moment reminds me of “you manage to find a way to win” scene from under the red hood, then I know it’s one my favorite Batman moments. This one when he saves Gordon and doesn’t kill Joker nor Bane, AND doesn’t die. Proof that Batman doesn’t need to kill, that he doesn’t take the easy way out.

Kinda like the scene in The Dark Knight where the hostages are dressed as clowns, the swats are targeting them, and the real thugs are dressed as doctors. Batman finds a way to beat the thugs, save the hostages, and stop the swats from shooting the wrong people, all without a single person dying. That’s BATMAN

Seems like you dont understand why dunkey made that criticism in the first place. He criticized a lot of people for the "It makes you feel like -" line because most people used that expression alone as if it was meaningful criticism, which in it of itself, it obviously isnt because it doesnt really say anything. That is if you dont ELABORATE on it. And that is really the key word here isnt it? I mean why cant he say that the game makes him feel like batman, when he spends the rest of the video elaborating on why it makes him feel that way. That is meaningful criticism because he is actually saying something. Im sure you dont need me to tell you the difference between this, and what dunkey was actually criticizing when people used that line.

@Chance And that invalidates my point how exactly ? i mean good stories, even if they are in a game, are all about connecting you to something ( in this video he talks about how this story made him connect to the character of batman through its great characterization and development of the character ), or in other words MAKING YOU FEEL LIKE SOMETHING. You can talk about how a game makes you feel like a certain character in terms of gameplay, or you can do it in terms of a story. Sure, one method is more direct, the other is more indirect, but something tells me it wouldn't have been a good idea to talk about gameplay in a film/story analysis channel. Come on man, think about what you are saying for more than 3 seconds before you comment. Its exactly because of answers like this that youtube comment sections are complete shit shows. I'm not saying you're a bad guy or dumb or anything like that, you just have to think more before you speak your mind. Have a nice day.

Awesome video (disagree with your opinion but still respect it). The main reason I think some of us, don't like origins is because of that twist. The whole marketing of the game was around you not fighting the Joker again and black mask being the new big bad. And after two games with the Joker as the central antagonist, I wanted something different as well. I feel like if I had played this game in a vacuum without knowing anything about it, it would have helped me better appreciate it.

This was the first game I played since Aladdin on Sega Genesis. I didn’t know what it was that drew me in hour after hour, but I think this guy hits the nail on the head. It was two years ago (way after the release my older brother gave me his x-box), and now I can’t get enough of both narrative games as well as battle royals. I really only started playing video games in my late thirties, and now I can’t get enough. The intricacies of gaming have me hooked, and it is a slice of joy in a, sometimes, difficult world. Origins was the start of a beautiful and eye-opening relationship with gaming. Now, after work and dinner, me and my 12-year-old son take time out of our evening to bond in the hinterlands of our virtual experiences. We play COD, Apex, Fortnite, and (when we get the bug for a few days) long narratives like RDR2 and Uncharted. This game holds a special place in my heart knowing it has lead to a more fulfilled life
@Byeahman3 жыл бұрын
Origins may not be the best in the series, but it’s sure as hell my favorite one. The stealth was the most entertaining in this one because you could put the fear of god in the criminals. Batman has only existed for 2 years and he’s still widely known as just a storybook character, a myth. So when you start taking out criminals one by one, they have no idea what’s happening. When someone starts moving faster than you can see, landing punches that hurt worse then any other pain imaginable, you put fear into them and make them terrified. They think Batman is just going to kill them, and they have good reason to believe that because up to that point he was just a myth. The game makes you feel powerful. It makes you feel unstoppable. It makes you feared.

Only gripe with the game were some of the continuity retcons like when Joker met Harley in Blackgate it undermined the Arkham asylum interview tapes that established they met in Arkham Asylum and not in Blackgate. Also Batman having the grapnel boost even though in city it was only just at prototype stage.

the batman of the arkham games is at best a violent agent of the carceral state who alienates all the people closest to him and at worst exactly the opposite of what he should stand for: a protector of Gotham's people from systems of power they can't control. origins takes the aesthetic elements of Year One and chooses to leave out all the substance that made it interesting, suddenly a fight to dismantle Gotham's corruption is now a series of punch fights with assassins and look joker's here too. the introduction of antagonists like Anarky and the framing of Enigma that fill the same role that Batman did in Year One is truly baffling. but the serotonin to my gamer brain from pushing the square button was good enough to keep me playing through the abysmal story of these games, so props to them for that

One of my favorite underrated moments in the Arkham games is in in Origins. I don’t remember the context bit for bit but when Batman is fighting Bane (?) on a rooftop, in the middle of the fight you are actually part of, it cuts to the camera footage and angle of a news helicopter. The reporter inside comments on the dark figure appearing to be fighting off criminals, but can’t get a good eye on it. Then a spotlight is shined and it is confirmed. The myths are true, and it is being broadcasted to the entirety of Gotham City. The Batman is real
