It's unfortunate that Ken Watanabe had such a small role in this film. I love everything that guy does.

Yes!!! I’m so glad you brought this up. This is a very tricky situation, I feel like. The dramatist in me loves it because it’s “The Psycho Effect”: cast a great, well-known actor in a seemingly prominent role, then shockingly kill them off early in. “Ooooh!! Whaaaattttt???” But while that’s awesome for the shock, it sucks because the actor gets so little screen time. So anyway, Long story long, I agree completely my brother.

He kind of had to, the theatrical nature of the "esoteric Japanese swordsmaster" was exactly the misdirection Ra's Al Ghul teaches. For audiences at the time, it would've hit hard.

Alfred's opinion on the brick and mortar nature of Wayne mansion came about by seeing how even with nothing, all their social status tarnished and their assets gone, even when officially dead for 7 years, the Waynes stop at nothing to help Gotham. The Batman is the Wayne legacy, Bruce embodies his family name. In a way, his actions caused character growth in Alfred too.

Yeah for sure. A lot of tension built into it as well. And even though these are awesome composers in their own right, can you imagine the long shadow cast by Danny Elfman’s iconic original score only 16 years before this?

This trilogy did something a lot these comic book movies don't do, especially Batman, and that's grounded it in reality. I think that's one thing that made it very popular. Like Ra's al-Ghul, who in comics, has the ability and knowledge to be genuinely immortal.

OH-EM-GEE! When the notification appeared on my phone I practically lost my sh!t! This is my absolute favorite reiteration of Batman! My introduction to this character was through Batman Returns and that weird Penguin guy that always freaked me the F out lol. So I wasn’t too keen on watching this one when it came out. I actually started with The Dark Knight (the 2nd movie of this trilogy), I went to see it in theaters because I was pretty curious to see Heath Ledger’s Joker. And h-o-l-y g-u-a-c-a-m-o-l-e! I became obsessed. To this day, it’s my all time favorite Batman movie, I don’t think anything tops it. So I’m super stoked for you to see it next. As you mentioned, the music in these is top notch. Hans Zimmer is one of my favs. I highly suggest you pay close attention to the soundtrack that accompanies all the Joker scenes. It’s so eerie and intentionally unnerving. Listen for it. Gives me the creeps. It’s genius. Gosh I could ramble on. So excited! ❤️

Hey lady!! YES, so good!! I am really looking forward to Heath Ledger! Truth be told, I thought he was in THIS movie, so halfway through I was thinking, "Where the f is Ledger??" lol. The 90s Batman was my Batman, and I LOVED Batman Returns as a kid. The Penguin freaked me out a little (that nose scene.. no ma'am), but I loved Tim Burton's dark stylings of that one. And Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman was so great.

This is definitely a set up. But I think it’s a great one. Michael Caine is amazing. You mentioned about him being fully into his role no matter which one he was playing. That’s especially true in Muppets A Christmas Carol. Just a kids movie but he plays it amazingly. There are plenty of people that have made fun of Christian Bale’s Batman voice but I think it adds depth and makes it not as obvious that he’s Bruce Wayne underneath. The Dark Knight is a masterpiece (and Heath Ledger is amazing in it) so I’m very excited for the next one!

Thanks @Aegis Duensing! Yeah, I'm really looking forward to the next one. that's a great point you make about his voice. I hadn't noticed anything bad about it- Batman's always had that rough voice if I remember correctly- but especially here with Christian Bale's Bruce speaking kind of low and dark anyway, he has to go Hershey's Special Dark dark to distinguish it properly :)

@@DavidvsFilm yeah, not to say this film is bad, because it isn’t. I’m just excited to see you watch Heath Ledger, because while I’m sure you consider him a great actor, it will really show a side of his talent never seen before, and I wish I could see what he could’ve done after The Dark Knight. And I think you're generally right about Jim Gordon; he *needs* to be a steady presence to balance Batman's intensity; Gary Oldman puts the "support" in "supporting character" and it's hard to see that through the comic-book razzle-dazzle. Excellent video!

Batman Begins was a great take on the Batman lore, but, as an origin story, it largely was a set-up for the next two movies. (not saying the three movies aren't connected, but first movies like this tend to mostly be about introducing you to the world as it is created by this director). As a young adult I loved the Tim Burton Batman movies (as well as the third film with Val Kilmer, and even tolerated the fourth George Clooney Batman), but the Christopher Nolan trilogy suplanted them as my favorites. I reall appreciate the extreme dark tone of the new Pattinson version, The Batman, and Paul Dano's Riddler does come close to giving me Heath Leger-Joker vibes, but still didn't top the Nolan versions for me. Det. Gordon wasn't developed much as a character in the first movie, but the character definitely grows over the course of the next two films, and Gary Oldman does a fantastic job. Not surprising since Gary Oldman is such a great actor. He disappears into every character he takes on. Many times you don't recognize him. Just compare him in this role (over the three films) with his role as Sirius Black (Harry Potter), Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (The Fifth Element), Winston Churchill (Darkest Hour-not to be confused with the sci fi film THE Darkest Hour), George Smiley (Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy), Ivan Korshunov (Air Force One), Dracula (Bram Stoker's Dracula), Beethoven (Immortal Beloved), Sid Vicious (Sid & Nancy), Dreyfus (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Rosencrantz (Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead), and on and on and on. Every character is completely unique.

I still haven't seen it to this day (though I'd be up for it now vs. when I was a scared wee one lol). And I have been meaning to watch Tinker Taylor for YEARS because I think I would really like that one. About Batman, the 90s ones (especially Burton's) were my absolute favorites. I don't judge movies harshly now as it is, but definitely at that age I loved every one of them. I need to rewatch now as an adult and see if I find them any more cringeworthy, because back then they were just so much fun. These and the Affleck ones I missed, but I did recently watch The Batman on my own and really liked it. Very dark.

Warner Brothers got thousands of letters protesting the casting of Michael Keaton. These people actually bought stamps, and mailed actual letters, in the hopes of getting him fired. Batman fans have a pretty strong streak of skepticism with regard to casting. Though the only casting I recall being initially stupidly controversial on that scale in the Dark Knight trilogy was Heath Ledger.

Oh I didn’t realize that! Thanks for the comment :) And love the way you rightfully put that, btw- “bought stamps..” Very true. Hate mail used to MEAN something back then. You had to EARN it! lol.

Oh yes, please please PLEASE do the trilogy, and then more DC like the DCEU (Man of Steel with Henry Cavill as Superman, Batman Vs Superman Ultimate Edition with Ben Affleck as Batman, Wonder Woman, Zack Synder's Justice League, Aquaman), then The Batman.

There's four Batman villians in this movie, though one is a cameo. Ra's Al Ghul, Scarecrow, Carmine Falcone and Victor Zsasz (cameo). Most superhero movies that try to incorporate more then two villians don't do a great job building them up. Think Spiderman 3.

Oooh yes! Excited to see the reaction to this trilogy! I know I’m in the heavy minority, but I highly prefer DC movies to Marvel movies. I just love gritty “realism” they have. I’m drinking a Mai tai with y’all today! 😄
@DavidvsFilm
@DavidvsFilm Жыл бұрын
Hey you! Woohoo for the Mai Tai!!!! Yeah, same here historically with DC vs. Marvel. Growing up, I was always a Batman and Superman fan. MCU has won me over with it's more modern offerings, but I would race to see a Batman movie in the 90s vs X-Men for example. And specifically, I'm a huge Batman fan- these Dark Knight movies are the only movies I missed because I was all over the place when they came out (and the Ben Affleck ones because I just haven't seen them yet).

I've seen this one many times, but for whatever reason it just doesn't stick with me. I remember a few scenes here and there, but otherwise it's always like watching it for the first time. I do enjoy the other two in this series though. Christian Bale is my 2nd favorite batman after Ben Affleck (I'm THAT girl lol). Your reactions to young Joffery were brilliant!
@DavidvsFilm

I was SHOCCCCKKKKEEDDDDD to see that little sh*t! lol. I joke, though, because I'm aware of the torture that poor actor endured post-Joffrey. I'll get back to you on my feelings after watching the next 2, but as of now, I liked this one. I'm a nerd for history, backstory, stuff like that, so I enjoyed those aspects of this movie in defining the character. I am excited to get to Affleck's version, by the way! I loved him so much in Argo, Gone Girl, and of course Armageddon (aka the movie where he went full-on heartthrob and bought his "Hollywood teeth" lol) way back in the day.

Could you fellas tone down the swearing. It was distracting. The talking through the WHOLE movie. Do you act like that in a movie theater? Comments throughout the movie is not that necessary. A few comments is good enough. BTW: You are aware Batman Begins is the origin story. The Dark Knight is a masterpiece. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I saw it in 2008 on the big screen at a late show.
