Batman Begins (2005) gets a full analysis in New Rockstars' rewatch of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. What did you miss from Nolan's Batman films? Erik Voss breaks down Batman Begins scene by scene, uncovering fascinating clues in the imagery, story structure, camerawork, set design, music, and dialogue that reveal the deeper meaning of Nolan's film. What influences did the filmmakers draw upon in their depiction of Batman, the Joker, Scarecrow, Bane, Ra's Al Ghul, and the League of Shadows? What Easter Eggs are hidden in Batman Begins by Nolan's obsessive attention to detail? In what ways does Batman Begins foreshadow the events of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises? Does Batman Begins secretly tell us the origin of the Joker?

Erik here! How SILLY of me to mispronounce Cillian Murphy! Thank you all SO MUCH for watching this video -- I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did producing it. Question -- do you guys think Murphy could have been used more in these movies?

It humanized Batman in a way Batman has never been before, with justifying his gadgets and abilities. As tragic as it is to be orphaned, it takes a lot to make a person go from depressed and distraught to determined and bold. By exploring that, we see more about the character and his worldview than we ever got previously. Batman Begins is brilliant still.

Zack Snyder loves accurate homages that are nothing but spectacle. Nolan's pays homages that add deeply to the film's narrative. Love Zack, but he needs more classes on directing and writing.

You nailed it; it feels like Snyder approaches a scene with the mindset of "how can this scene serve the visual I'm going for" whereas Nolan approaches it like "how can this scene serve the story I'm going for". 99% of the time, a good story makes for a better movie than good visuals.

I think the efforts to justify Batman's existence (or at least ground it in realism) is great. It was sorely missed in the Burton/Schumacher movies and I think it was a good test run for the MCU. Remember that three of the four superheroes in Phase I of the MCU owe their abilities to military R&D, and the other is an alien, which explains why he is so much stronger than a human.

By definition batman isn't a superhero unless you count being rich a super power in the same way ironman and hawk eye aren't either

Ethan Hornby being a superhero isn’t about being born with abilities, being a super hero is about doing what is right even though you don’t have to

Well if you base it off the comics, he is superhuman with inhuman strength and reflexes. But Nolan's adaptation makes it more realistic.

Not enough comic book references. You mentioned the most blatantly obvious ones. The whole plot involving the Scarecrow was taken from an anthology called "Haunted Knight". In one of the stories, Scarecrow is the main villain, and Batman Begins take a lot of visual and narrative cues for its plot from that. The grand master plan of Ra's Al Ghul is from Batman Annual #8. The character of Ken Watanabe is actually the character from the comics called Sensei, who is Ra's biological father and the original lead of the League.

EgocentricHead also, the nod to Bruce's ancestor who used the batcave to free slaves is a direct reference to a Shadow of the bat issue where Bruce discovered Joshua Wayne's tomb, the member of his family who first created an heroic alter ego to help people in need (that's right: slaves).
