Which Batman Adaptation Has Your Favourite Nightwing?

I like Young Justice's version since his transition to Nightwing was very smooth (even to the point Bruce and Dick are very cool with each other after the fact) compared to other adaptations. Plus they go into the "man whore" aspect of Dick even though its a kid's show 🤣 .As for a crazy one i would go with the TAS comic version because Bruce Timm is just insane (stop trying to push this Bruce and Barbara ship on others pls?)

I think Young Justice did it best, even if we didn't get to see the actual transition. He grows and is yet consistent throughout, which is a strong suit of that show, and helps it remain one of the best animated DC series out there... Despite the frying-pan-to-the-face of political correctness that drags down it's later seasons (not a commentary on the subject matter of the political correctness, but the ridiculously delivered manner of it)

Something that I find very annoying is how absolutely no adaptation of Nightwing makes the connection with Superman, every time they tend to invent some other origin for the name or simply say that he became Nightwing, and the way the dcu is setting it up maybe it's the same thing. It has become a dream for me to see an animated series in which we have a scene in which Clark and Dick talk about the legend of the Kryptonian vigilante.
@kermitgotthesickkicks426511 ай бұрын
That'd be awesome.
@darkmask593311 ай бұрын
In general, most modern depictions of Nightwing seriously downplay just how much Dick considers Clark a mentor as well. I would venture a guess a big part of that is simply due to how many Superman sidekicks there are nowadays, between Supergirl and Superboy, that they keep Robin/Nightwing 'in his own lane' and only having him see Bruce as his mentor.
@EnerKaizer11 ай бұрын
That's because the golden age story of Superman and the original Nightwing character never left the comics. there never was an adaption or mention of it ever, and even today most people only know about it because of people like us repeating that information on the internet.

In Fairness... It makes a bit of sense with the silver age context. In that time Bruce was depicted to be in his mid-to late 30ies while Talia was shown to be in her early 20ies, so Dick flirting with her is not as weird as you'd think. Thanks for spotlighting that great Nightwing debut scene from Teen Titans. That scene (along with the matching one in Batman, where Dick hands the Robin costume over to Jason) was incredibly satisfying to those of us who'd watched Dick Grayson's growth over the years. It is pretty amazing that Nightwing as a concept has survived through so many reboots and adaptations, but that just shows what a natural evolution of the character it was.

Nightwing came out ready to be called Disco Fever but, Batman knew it and had to put a stop to it. I think if Dick added to why he found Nightwing a good idea, saying maybe will come through even during dark times without being in the dark, or some thing else. Showing more of the kind of hero Dick wants to move towards other than rebelling or wanting to be taken seriously. You will never forget the one time Jason slept with Talia and I won't forget when Catwoman kissed Nightwing.

Red Arrow almost feels like a cautionary tale of a sidekick doing the same thing and stumbling much, much harder. Would love to see you cover Red Arrow's transformation from Speedy. You can easily link it back to Young Justice, which really leaned into the Red Arrow origin (Robin/Nightwing were there, of course, but YJ decided to do that whole story with a timeskip, plus made the original Robin younger than Speedy).

I love that novel! It's on my shelf right now. I've always thought it was the best and most insightful portrayal of the sidekicks' pre-hero lives. That casual line about Roy still dreaming and counting in his first language hit me hard when I first read it, especially because Ollie was so clearly negligent that I knew no one had spoken to Roy in anything other than English at home for years. It was heartbreaking. That book is why I started collecting language dictionaries--and yes, I started by tracking down one for Navajo/Dine'bizaad. Now I make a point of learning at least a few words in any language I expect to encounter in a new place. All because of Ollie Queen's terrible parenting. 😂

You said that in the comics when Dick first appears wearing the Nightwing suit he is presenting it to his teammates. But I'm pretty sure that when he first appears wearing it, the rest of the Titans have already been captured by Deathstroke, Terra and the H.I.V.E. The people that are there to see Dick's new costume for the first time are Deathstroke's wife (ex-wife?) and her son, Jericho. That's why you have the page split into two panels - one of the new Nightwing, and the other of Mrs. Deathstroke introducing her son, Jericho, in his costume (who would go on to join the Titans).

Robin flirting with Batman's foe/love interest was probably started as a thing by Milton Caniff back in the 30s and 40s, in the very popular and successful Terry and the Pirates comic strip. Terry Lee was originally a kid who followed Pat Ryan around China on various adventures, who had all the ladies after him. Dragon Lady being Pat's most famous love interest. Terry grew up in the strip, Pat mostly leaves the series during WW2 when, now young adult, Terry became a pilot in China. Pat joining the Navy if memory serves. But Caniff's only aged the teen girl characters that Terry had met while a boy and didn't age the adult female characters. This allowed Terry to romance the Dragon Lady himself when he finally ran into her again. Caniff had a thing about aging his male characters while not aging or more slowly aging the women in his series. You saw this in his Steve Canyon comic strip as well.

His current costume definitely looks sharper, but I do think it has the unfortunate side effect of making him look more out of place in larger scale superhero battles, and dare I say "naked" (Which says a lot considering the original Robin costume)?

Since you've been on a comic-to-TV-show adaptation roll lately, any chance you'd be willing to talk about the X-Men TAS Phoenix saga adaptation (Season 3 episodes 3-7)? I finally read the original version in Uncanny X-Men #97-108 and was shocked by how different it felt, including: 1. Different order of events 2. The comic was much less cohesive than the adaptation (exposition dump about D'Ken and the crystal finally given in issue #107, really? Not to mention issues #104 (Magneto) and 106 (Xavier's dark side), which mess with the arc's pacing) 3. The stakes and events of the climax were a lot more intense in the show (in the comic, the universe imploding was only imagined by Jean, Breaking Dawn style) 4. Some of the comic characters were very different compared to their animated counterparts, even without the different lineup (short tempered Jean calling Logan an "obnoxious little upstart" when he tries to stop her from piloting the shuttle was definitely not what I expected lmao) 5. There's almost no time dedicated to Lilandra in the comic, and her romance with Xavier comes completely out of nowhere in issue #108, unlike in the show where they have them connecting romantically on Muir Island in "The Cry of the Banshee" Other random things that don't contribute to the story adaptation but are worth mentioning: 1. The amount of times in the comic that the X-Men fought each other (or imposters of each other) - issues #97, 100, 106 2. Colossus being so protective of/close to Storm that my shipper senses went on immediate alert 3. The massive chip on Cyclops' shoulder throughout the arc (from the death of Thunderbird, clash with the new team on his leadership style, and worry for Jean)

It's weird how many times I've seen a Nightwing debut which decided to show "how grown up he was" by having Dick have sexual tension with one of Bruce's exes.

The ending with Batman giving him the name Nightwing always bothered me, even as a kid. Two other little things that I noticed and bothered me about the episode are some continuity inconsistencies in the opening flashback. For example they have Kanjar Ro in the training simulator, even though chronically no one should know who he is yet, until the series premier. Same with Plastic Man, as he is shown in the League lineup quickly, even though O'Brian doesn't become Plastic Man until later. Which you can tell by his origin, because Batman is wearing his main costume, instead of the old one from this flashback.
@kermitgotthesickkicks426511 ай бұрын
I'd just take it as them reusing character designs like how the DCAMU does it a lot of civilian characters looking like characters from young justice.
@symbiote4211 ай бұрын
@@kermitgotthesickkicks4265 I suppose that is the reason why. But it was always just a little thing that annoyed with this brief part, little tiny canon inconsistencies. Besides that it's a fun episode.

I don't think they were trying to go with a Batman knows best tone with him giving Dick the name. From the clip and what you've been talking about, it sounds more like they were trying for a tone where Batman accepted that Dick had moved on and so the name of Nightwing was him giving Dick his blessing. I can see how it could be read the other way though.
@Geostelar492011 ай бұрын
So I like Batman giving him the name as a kind of aknowledgement of Dick and letting him know he approves of this choice. The belives that Robin can do this on his own, and by providing the name its a sign of goodwill and like "Hey you can do it, no need to be Robin any more"

The problem with Dick becoming Nightwing was it was not a stand alone story the very next panel of his Nightwing debut is nobody's favorite Titan Jericho taking up as much space. I loved Brave and The Bold my only problem is they never did a Legion of Superheroes episode or a Supergirl episode.

Humbly requesting a video on ... Ubu. He always seems to show up with Ra's, but never gets anything to do. He'd be 100% unremarkable except for the fact that TDKR lifted him for Bane. Does he ever get to do anything? Why is this named henchman appear so often without any lines ever? Why was he the poster antagonist in the biggest Batman movie ever?

The few media projects that has the transition to Robin to Nightwing on screen, it's honestly rare with all the Robin/Nightwings we've had, since most happen in future episodes, in between seasons, and the only other one doesn't really count either is Titans, because there was a huge gap of time where Dick was just floundering about.... wait... Also, I liked the relationship between him and Talia, since since version seemed to skew younger... Gonna drop some VA facts, because it's me, Talia is voiced by Andrea Bowen. She played Julie Mayer, Susan's daughter, in Desperate Housewives', so a daughter to a Lois Lane lol. Her brother, Cameron Bowen, voiced Tim Drake in Young Justice, and Red Hood in Injustice 2, when brining up the Under The Redhood comic, that kinda got me skeeved a bit. Ra's Al Ghoul is voiced by Peter Jessop, he voiced Vision in Avengers EMH, and Albert Wesker in the RE1 Remake... I think that's kinda neat.)

One interesting thing about the Nightwing adaptations is how often both the Titans, Superman and the Jason Todd angle get ignored Others have mentioned the lack of Superman references in how this scene gets adapted or the lack of the Titans in Dicks life There is also however the lack of Jason Todd in this transition. In the actual original pre crisis comics, the treason why Grayson left the robin persona has nothing to do with his relationship with batman It has to do with the bat office at the time simply thinking that dick had aged out and they had no need for him as they had Jason Todd( pre crisis, Jason Todd had the exact same origin as dick Grayson) It was the Titans writers who took dick after heis character had been abandoned by the bat writers and turned him into Nightwing Nowadays of course, Nightwing is considered first and foremost a bat character but I don't think Nightwing even appears that n a batman title pre crisis

Show us so underrated. I resented it at first but if you're a true bat-fan and watch the show you'll see each episode is made with just as much love and has just as many deep cuts ( sometimes even more obscure deep cuts) as any BTAS episode. I consider it just as valid as BTAS, it’s just on the literal opposite end of the Bat-spectrum (which goes from Dark - Bright on the Knight scale)
