It's likely a case of nostalgia but even bad Aparo is great to see. I miss him as a regular artist on Batman. I grew up on reading Aparo's Brave and Bold comics. Nonetheless, an interesting take on a classic comic. Certainly a lot of energy in those panels. And I love the epilogue!

Aparo was a serviceable to good Batman artist for the late seventies to early eighties. He was not right for this saga or issue, I remember someone from the production team admitting as much. Then again, perhaps there was no jobber right for a "breaking of the Bat" type of story. Just look at what safe and correct nineties artists did with The Death of Superman.

@@wtk6069 Yeah. Now that you mention it, I can see how his style developed as a synthesis of those influences and remained distinctive through such a long time. Don't get me wrong, I like what he did and consider him a definitive artist of that era.

Seems to me the original is a prisoner of representationlism, but the bootleg is a prisoner of expressionism. The true art lies in capturing both, as people like Klimt and Egon Schiele were able.

I had watched the stream and looked forward to this. It is so much better than I had imagined. I called my wife over and we were cackling like schoolchildren. That one panel of bane holding up batman bare-ass naked and fully erect, goddamn. I don't need to go to the gym today, I got a full body workout just try to hold myself together through this thing.

Yup, that ending is straight out of the last Nolan movie. Which I thought was a complete mess of a movie. The fight between Bane and Batman in that one was worse than the original comic.

nudity is metacommentary indicating a deeper level to what on the surface is a mere punchout...they are literally in a relationship/locked together...sex and violence being two sides of the same coin (the violence being the dark, dark side of said coin, though admittedly between consenting adults I know I don't have to tell you 'rough sex' is a thing far and wide for all history)...and Bane is definitely getting off on it...furthermore, practicing jujitsu is called "rolling" ...and the positions definitely mirror a "roll in the hay" for example...the term "go at it" could be used for either or, etc, etc. The first I heard of this convention is in the Philip Jose Farmer books (you've probably heard of his Wold-Newton mythos)...in said mythos his Tarzan / Doc Savage analogs are locked in hand to hand, genitals engorged. Shocking to hear at first, but once you think about it, there is admittedly a very sexual aspect/next logical step to the classical superhero punchout.

"BY GOD HE'S BROKEN IN HALF!!!" I think the naked Bane comes from the recent Tom King run. In "I am suicide" Batman and Bane had a fight wear bane is naked to show he needs nothing to beat the bat.
