First off, just want to say I love your videos. They are wondefully produced, very informative and well organized. I first came across your channel when wondering if I should purchase the Final Crisis omnibus, and it convinced me to do so, which is a book I ended up loving. As for Tom King's work, first thing I read from him was his Batman run, and immediatly became one of my favorite Batman runs of all time. Since then, read a bunch of other King books, and they were all phenomenal. Complelty agree on your take regarding his work, both within and outside Batman titles.

For me, this run made by Tom King is the best that could ever happen to the character since Grant Morrison. Trully a well structured story adding new elements to Bruce Wayne and Batman psyche. He can be Batman and also being happy. It was a very good run. Glad you’re back, king.

Really well produced video. Would love to see more longer form content from you like this, since even your overview show-off type videos have always been top of the line. Love watching your IG stories as well, even as my Conan omnibus collection stacks up ;) I've been up and down on King's run. Only really read the very beginning and then chunks past #50 so far. Probably compelling me to finish out my collection. All the art is incredible and King is clearly one of the most talented writers in the mainstream medium right now. A couple parts like Rooftops and the first annuals are all-timers. The mess surrounding #50 annoyed me, the impacts on Nightwing and Alfred annoy me, the tangling up with Flashpoint annoys me, and I'm in the middle on the suicide thread. Though I think that editorial, marketing, and management clearly funked things up a tad, as you note. Also think that like several other major modern runs, the original release scheduling of these titles really harms the quality and long term critical valuation. Batman was one of the many Rebirth titles that shipped twice a month, and I think through the entire King run, and that necessitates working with multiple artists and other hiccups. King's Batman clearly fared a lot better than other examples like Spencer's Spider-Man in my view, but it still doesn't help. Everyone can totally have their own opinions and prerogative on these matters, but I'd consider doing some further reading on the swiping in the work of Joelle Jones. It's a common practice among even the greatest artists in the medium. Can look into some of the statements and advice folks like Wally Wood made on swiping, tracing, etc. as well as the thoughts of modern folks like Ed Piskor and the Kayfabe crew. Also see Wood's "22 Panels That Always Work" guide. The very first appearance of Batman has Bob Kane doing multiple swipes, including the iconic cover - though Kane already has a dodgy rep among fandom. The lines between influence, homage, swiping, tracing, and plagiarism are very murky. Another major factor to consider, frankly, is the tight deadlines and limited compensation in this industry that often drives artists to these kinds of efficiency-minded techniques. Personally, I think Jones has established her artistic credibility enough otherwise to give her the benefit of the doubt. Whereas there are other artists who rely on swiping or plagiarism to a much more egregious degree and clearly in an avenue of laziness or disregard for their fellow creators. Unfortunately, I get the impression Jones just cannot draw a monthly title, given the haphazard ways that her Catwoman and Wonder Girl runs have ended up. It's frustrating because if she was faster or given more time with her deadlines, her work is beautiful. Which ties into one of my earlier points on how the commercial whims of publishing inherently affect the quality of this medium, and it's even felt far after initial publication by those of us who focus on collected editions. It’s fine if you like Tom King but the Biggest sins of Tom King’s time at DC is: Nightwing shot in the head which destroyed Nightwing and Titans for two years. Wally West becoming a “murderer” Alfred murdered Thomas Wayne’s weak and nonsensical heel turn The terrible romantic dialogue between Selina and Bruce The Nonsense of Batman punching Tim Drake because it was part of some grand plan to defeat Bane City of Bane being a big flop.

Totally understand. I dont agree with the outcomes of some of his story arcs but one point I alluded to in this video is that Alfred's murder was 100% Didio not King. He revealed in an interview that when Damian saw Alfred, it was a Scarecrow hallucination but after Didio read the issue, he wanted King to make him stay dead. King and the editors had to make that work. Theres a lot of interference with marketing/senior staff.

I've always been torn on Tom King's run on Batman. On one hand, he's got some great stories, like "Super Friends", the "I Am" trilogy, his two issues of "The Button", "Cold Days", "Tyrant Wing", and his best story (imo) "The Brave And The Mold". On the other hand, he's got some absolute stinkers, the biggest ones being "Beasts Of Burden", "Everybody Loves Ivy", "The Gift", and the "Knightmares" story arcs. His run really is a mixed bag. Hell yeah.
