This was definitely my favorite campy Batman. It’s still highly entertaining to me even though it’s cheesy lol…Val is solid. TLJ and Jim Carrey were great for this particular version of Batman movie…And Nicole Kidman is just gorgeous 🤷🏽‍♂️

Watched as a kid. Jim Carey made an awesome Riddler will not lie. Loved all these cheesy Batmans as a kid. As an adult now I realize they are not the greatest movies objectively but they are Fun and worth watching. They may not be as dark as more modern Batman movies but I love the comicy, sillyness, and just pure fun 90s cheese action.

I used to love this movie. I had it on VHS, when I was younger. I watched it several times, and my siblings and my mom were so sick of it. I discovered this movie when I was like 3, so that was 18 years ago. And I kept watching it in first grade and second grade.

Saw this in the theater and it was the first one I saw where in which I remembered every detail of it. Many of my friends felt that Jim Carrey was the real star of the film not Batman, I still enjoy this movie to this day and I admit it’s a lot different than the other Batman movies. It’s also the only one where we have Batman with a sidekick, something I was excited about since I was such a big fan of the 1966 tv series. So different though as in the 1966 tv series Batman and Robin work together just fine but not in these movies. The Riddler has always been my favorite Villian along with the Joker as they always make me laugh, it will be interesting to see The Riddler in The Batman as he hasn’t been done since this one. I was happy to see a better two face in the Dark Knight. This was the only time I saw Tommy Lee Jones play a villain.

Just saw this for the first time tonight, this is a weird one again, but Kilmer as Wayne/Batman is a great fit, I totally buy that Wayne can hold his own (something Keaton never gave off) tortured, and be a Batman that is bleeding Conroy, Riddler is over the top definitely but somehow Jim pulls it off for me but I understand you’re frustration of the trope, TLJ as Two Face….eghhh lol this is a definite tonal shift but not too jarring to the story much 8/10

Although Batman Forever's considered to be a silly film, I believe it has some emotional moments. Bruce's arc in the film revolves around him seeking therapy from Nicole Kidman's character, because he's dealing with guilt from his past. Bruce has to think about if he should keep being Batman or not. In The Dark Knight Rises, Bruce stopped being Batman for eight years! In Batman Forever, Bruce considers retiring from being Batman, but he realizes that being a hero is something that he genuinely wants to do, rather than just being something that he does because of the loss of his parents. In my opinion, it's a much better story arc for Bruce than the storyline he had in The Dark Knight Rises. Jim Carrey's take on the Riddler received lots of mixed reception. Jim Carrey earns a lot of respect for basing his performance off of Frank Gorshin's Riddler. Frank Gorshin's Riddler is one of my favorite villains of all time, so Jim Carrey taking inspiration from him is great.

Batman Forever was supposed to be more in line with the Burton films because Schumacher clearly knew Batman. It was WB that screwed it up and edited the darker parts out. If you have the novelisation by Peter David, you should review it. I will never forget Two Face committing suicide in the book and how he murdered the security guard at Arkham Asylum at the start of the book to escape. Some of those parts from the Book can be found in forever’s deleted scenes, which is the best we’re going to get apart from the book unless WB releases the Schumacher cut one day.

I think the opening scene is one of the only bits of self-parody. This film COMPLETELY knows what it wants to be and chases it relentlessly. I think looking for a grounding here will lead to disappointment. Even the Bruce Wayne drama that isn't cut is almost never grounded. I adore this film and would not have wanted a 3rd Burton film since Returns was the peak of his vision. I wonder if people would be more positive on these 2 films had they been animated. Bear in mind, I have no history with these movies, I was raised on The Dark Knight trilogy, I was raised on Batman vs. Superman, and I really do adore those as much as Joel's duology and the 60s series.

This is a weird one for me. While I find the story jumpy, Val’s Batman is only ok, and it can go overboard with the campiness, Jim Carrey is perfect casting as The Riddler for that era. He is over the top and I loved his performance. He is one of the more underrated Batman villains, even if his origin is kind of weak. Tommy Lee Jones is quite good as Two-Face, but he is no Aaron Eckhart. Chris O’Donnell and Nicole Kidman are fine in this one. The action is alright. At the end of the day, this is a solid movie that does not have any high highs (other than Riddler), but not extremely low lows like the next movie. Also, this is coming from someone who watched this movie for the first time last week. I did not grow up with this movie. The Riddler/Jim Carrey was worth the watch alone. That’s my take on this one.

Again, "Batman Forever" by Peter David explains Riddler's obsession very well. He was a smart kid who was bullied and found comfort in the fact that Bruce Wayne from a newspaper article he'd read seem to portray Bruce as a smart kid. Riddler could also solve crosswords in record timing.

I feel you’d like the villain scorned by the hero trope more if this film wasn’t the first one to real out do it. Now any film that does it like the Incredibles is just doing Batman Forever and that’s never a good comparison to have. I wonder if something like that might have changed your perception. I feel like it’s not a bad concept just most films that use it don’t execute as cleanly and they’d like to.

This is when it started to come off the tracks. Each one of these 1st four exponentially drop farther from the light. One of fave parts is how Riddler gets his costume from that little fortune booth dude, it's organic and works in this reality. In the new movie I wish they would've made a better attempt at adapting the Riddler instead of adapting the Zodiac Killer. I'm not saying full question mark suit, but something. Question mark cufflinks, gold ? tie clip on a green tie. His online avatar could've worn a bowler and a domino mask. Gimme something guys.

Batman Returns had many campy elements, to name a few: The Bat CD player; the Batmobile lift; Penguin's rubber duck; Penguin riding the miniature Batmobile; Batman battling an army of actual penguins. The idea that seriousness is necessarily best is flawed, in my opinion. The more serious elements of Returns remind me more of Edward Scissorhands than any Batman storyline. Penguin is seriously modified from the comics, and is essentially a physically different person who grew up outside of society, and is now immersed in society as an adult (see Scissorhands). Forever takes Silver Age storylines and sets them into the '90s. Schumacher described Forever as a "living comic book," and that is what Forever is, like it or not. Forever is not perfect, but its pacing and visual style exceed that of Returns. Returns makes Gotham seem like a smaller world than in Batman '89, its pacing is much slower, its dark elements clash with its campy elements. They do not mesh well, and it is jarring. I rank Forever 2nd between '89 and Returns.

People forget that the first 4 movies where just a live action cartoon movies made for kids. Nowdays comic book movies have become more mature and serious and are being aimed to everyone, so viewing the old ones out of context and comparing them to the way comic book movies are made today is a big disservice and misses the point.

@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout so you think that a movie with walking penguins with rockets attached to their backs are not cartoonish? Or what about a man being fried with a hand shake? Or a bunch of goons dressed as clowns and circuss freaks causing mayhem while batman fights them one by one? The tone might be dark (like the animated show) but the movies are definitely a cartoon brought to life, just like the first 3 ninja turtles movies where back in the 90s.

I saw it a couple times, the first time when I was much younger, and just a couple days ago. I love Jim Carrey on that wacky hot streak, but he this Riddler is, as you said, the worst villain cliche. And Tommy Lee Jones is even worse. I liked Tim Burton's design of Gotham, instead of this neon nightmare. And then there's Chase Meridian...ohhh boy. Probably the horniest femme fatale in Batman live-action (including Catwoman). It's the beginning of the end with the nipples on the costumes, although they're not as prominent as in B&R. Not as bad as its reputation would have you believe (Josstice League has aged worse), but it's still pretty bad.

Sean this movie wasn't Schumacher's vision is was the vision of WB execs and I think Schumacher only took the job because it paid good money. I didn't mind this movie at all . As someone whose first Jim Carrey's peformance with limited material , the cinematography (which was nominated for an Oscar I should add) and the epic Seal song are best thing about this movie . At least this movie still tries to do some exploration of Bruce's dual identity as Bruce Wayne and Batman . I thought Kilmer had a good voice for Batman as well but Chris O Donnell was Meh Tommy Lee Jones is absolutely horrible as Two Face trying to upstage Jim Carrey . All the characters are written a bit cartoonishly though. Jim Carrey's Riddler was inspired by the The Riddler in 60s show btw

It was my favorite Batman movie growing up, but it definitely hasn’t aged well. Riddler and Two Face feel less like adaptations of the characters from the comics and more like weak attempts at recreating the Joker, just two eccentric performances that spend half of their screen time laughing. The backstory with Bruce Wayne is somewhat interesting, but Kilmar’s performance is extremely wooden. The film is mostly just noisy and flashy, which gets tiresome after a while, except maybe for kids.

I don’t think the camp is why this movie has a bad reputation. It’s that the story here is really choppy. That’s probably because this movie was really hacked down in the editing room. There was apparently a darker three hour cut of this movie. That sounds far more interesting and enjoyable than this. But the campy tone here is what really hurts this film. When you have Jim Carrey acting like Jim Carrey, it makes the movie feel really dated. It’s like if Jim Carrey was the villain for a Batman movie instead of The Riddler. So put it all together the story is choppy and the characterization of Batman is incredibly strange.

In the midst of that, after all the +’ing and -‘ing, I like Batman Forever the most. I wouldn’t have put in the neon or Bat-Nips, but I wouldn’t be nearly as goth as Burton was, especially in Batman Returns. For all the Batman lore that was lacking between Burton/Schumacher, the first thing I did after seeing Batman Begins was send Schumacher a thank-you letter. The Nolanverse was what made the Bat-franchise go Phoenix.

I like this movie Val is a good Batman and Jim Carrey is an energetic Riddler but Paul Dano did better in The Batman

It’s campy and silly but overall very fun in my opinion and I love watching it! I agree that it is consistent with what it is going for. If you want something more serious, this isn’t it. Nolan trilogy, for me, is the best ever but I don’t mind the fun campy 90s Batman Forever. It’s nostalgic for me at least, haha.

I haven’t seen this movie in a very long time. When it dropped, I was 13 and loved it. I’m sure if I watch it again it’ll have some nostalgia factor going for it. Idk if I’d like it as much tho lol.

Two Face has a very nonsensical motivation because he wants revenge on Batman because he failed to prevent his face from getting burned instead of wanting revenge on the criminal that threw the acid on his face.

Funny that he didn’t say a word about Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face😂

Not a fan of Batman Forever. I'm not much of a fan of Batman 89 either. I really like Batman Returns though.

So you want an opinion from someone who grew up with the Nolan movies... ok here it is... I was 5 years old when Batman Begins came out and I saw it in theater. I remember not liking it. I thought it was incredibly boring. Over the years I’ve come to like it a little more. When the Dark Night came out, I liked it slightly more than Batman Beginnings, but still didn’t think it was great. I watched the old series soon after the Dark Night was released, and loved all four movies! But the one that really blew by mind was Batman Forever. Still to this day, it is my favorite Batman movie. Why? Because of it’s escapism. Why do you watch movies? I personally watch them to get away from the real world for a while, Almost like a mini Vacation. I don’t want to see realistic stuff because I’m already In a real world. We have reality all around us, so in my opinion, if a movie doesn’t have some form of escapism, it isn’t worth watching.

I was raised on the dark Knight trilogy one of my best memories is seeing the dark Knight before I was old enough to watch in cinema with the UK age rating but my mum bought 2 tickets for Kung fu panda and 2 for the dark Knight and as we walked in she gave me and my brother the tickets for the dark Knight I really don't think this film would work for me at all eventhough I do really like batman 89 and returns.

There is a video made on Channel Awesome that would show what might have happen if Tim Burton directed Batman Forever (it's practically a movie itself). Sean, I know this request is a long shot, but I would like you to watch this and compare the two because in my mind, the Schumacher films don't exist and the video I mentioned finishes the Burton trilogy.

I watched this quadrilogy when I was about 10, a while after they came out. I really enjoyed 89, and I LOVED Batman Returns. And then I watched Forever. And I absolutely hated it. I hated the tone, I hated the jokes, I hated the production design, I hated the Batmobile, I hated the Batsuit and I hated the villains. And not because they were well written villains who I hated because of what they did. I hated them because of how they were portrayed. I had played tonnes of videogames, watched the Animated Series at this point. And Carrey and Jones simply weren't Riddler and Two-Face. And I dont even mind deviating from the comics. I loved Pfeiffer and DeVito in the previous film. But Carrey and Jones did not feel like they characters they were portraying. I've rewatched the movie plenty of times since I was a kid, and I still hate these versions of these iconic characters. The 1 thing I genuinely liked about this movie was Val Kilmer. He was a really good Batman. Besides Kilmer, I still hate this movie. Its definitely better than Batman and Robin, but I honestly doubt I will ever watch this movie again

Well I said it before I grew up with Forever and not going to lie I love it not only then when I was 22 but still today at 49 for me it's a more mature version of Batman 66 which I'm also a fan and its Simply FUN and it feels like a comic book come to life where Nolan's movies other than Begins lose that comic book feel to me so other than Begins just not a fan as most people are I like the Dark Knight and Rises but for me to watch them I've got to be in mood for Begins therefore to this day the Burton/ Schumacher films get watch way more than Nolan
