Bonkers movie. So so stylish. Ingenious cast. They no longer dare to make such films today. I think Christopher Walken is always somewhat overlooked. He's a great Con-Man in this. Always has the overview. Always everything under control. Catwomen and The Penguin have a tragic side. Both tortured people who become animals. Disowned by the upper class and beaten underground. Walken is this reckless upper class. Endless exploitation of the people, the city. He's the real villain here.

@Ambander Batman Returns is rated lower than the entire Nolan trilogy on both rotten tomatoes and IMDb and is rated lower than the ‘89 Batman on IMDb alone. I don’t think it’s considered the best Batman movie by anywhere near the majority of people.
@ar471
@ar471 2 жыл бұрын
@Ambander That’s an interesting theory, but it doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. First, if people don’t vote for old movies, then why is it that 17 of the top 20 rated movies on IMDb were all made prior to the date you claimed? Second, IMDb doesn’t just change their rating based on any old vote. You have to be a registered user and have a certain number of previous ratings before they even start to count you. Fanboys may try to change the numbers, but your example (Avengers) isn’t even in the top 200. I guess they didn’t try too hard.

I like how they focused on the psychotic nature of their characters. I love the writing in this movie. Depends on what you count as a kill. Do you count the devil guy he set on fire? Because we don't know if he dies. Do you count the Joker? Because clearly Batman was only trying to stop him from escaping. If Joker had let go of the ladder and/or the gargoyle was affixed more sturdily he wouldn't have died.

The origin of the Penguin and Catwoman were completely different from their comic counterparts. After the success of the first Batman film, Warner Bros continuously tried to get Tim Burton to agree to come back and do a sequel to the film. He wasn't really digging the idea of making sequels and wanted to explore other ideas. So to entice him back, they offered him creative control over the story and characters. So he completely redid the origins for both characters and brought in the brand new character of Max Schreck (named after the actor from Nosferatu). Burton had so much fun making the second movie that he was ready to jump right into development of the third. But when the movie came out, while it was a hit, it did not bring in anywhere near what the original made and parents groups complained about the movie being "aimed at kids" while unusually dark and the oversexualization of the characters. So Warners told Burton they were going to go in another direction for the next film. And, thus, the Joel Schumacher era was born. As a consolation, Tim Burton was one of the main producers on Batman Forever, although he opted out for Batman & Robin. Michael Keaton, on the other side, felt that the villains were overpowering his role in the film. He felt he played second fiddle to Jack Nicholson's Joker in the first movie and this movie had almost no development of the Bruce Wayne or Batman personas, in favor of both Penguin and Catwoman. So when he was asked to come back for the third movie, after reading the script and feeling it was awful, specifically asked for a much larger salary to reprise the role, figuring Warner Bros would not be willing to pay him and he could explore other films. Warners ended up recasting him with Val Kilmer for the next movie and subsequently went on to pay Arnold Schwarzenegger $20 million for 6 weeks of shooting in Batman & Robin.

@newspooiechannel
@newspooiechannel 2 жыл бұрын
Kind of depends on who you ask and when. Joel's story was that Val had constant ego trips on set and clashed with several people behind the scenes. Also, when Val decided he wanted to do 'The Saint' instead of Batman & Robin, it would have pushed the film back another year or so, and Warners wasn't having that. Val's story was that he became bored with the character after some kids visited the set and realized that they were only interested in props and the Batmobile, not him playing Batman. He also said he was unaware that WB wanted to fast-track the movie into production a month after Batman Forever and had already committed to 'The Saint.' Whereas Returns and Forever came out 3 years apart, Batman & Robin were only 2 years apart.

I love this movie so much, one of the only times I've felt Christmassy in the last ten years was a weird moment when I was alone wrapping presents and this movie came on, one of my favourite "secret christmas films" of all time. Danny Devito and Michelle Pfeiffer totally own every scene they're in.

To this day this is still my favorite Batman movie. The combination of Danny Devito and Michelle Pfeiffer is just epic. As much as I liked the Nolan movies, I still kind of like the comic book style over the super realistic. This one was just a lot creepier as well. Michelle is still the ultimate Cat Woman. And no one can match Danny as the Penguin. I don't really try to pick a favorite between the first movie and this one though, I just consider them one long movie.

This is my favorite 90s Batman. I feel like the first one was too self-important and the later ones were too dumb. This one strikes a good balance of weirdness and darkness. And this is probably the best live action Catwoman.

I remember seeing this in the cinema and could hear and see little kids crying because Penguin was just so creepy and how he was literally biting peoples noses off. Definitely not for little children this movie.

I like the original, and this one, and Batman Forever, I fully admit is dumb, and Tommy Lee Jones was not a good Two-Face, but, I like it in a so bad it's good way, Jim Carrey didn't play a necessarily accurate Riddler, but I like how he went all out, he didn't hold back, and is probably 50% of the reason I enjoy the movie, despite it being dumb. Batman and Robin however, goes to far in the opposite direction, and Instead of being fun, but dumb, is just dumb.

There's a scene in Big Fish where Danny DeVito's character is inside a trailer and it's shaking back and forth, and all I could think when I first saw it was, "the penguin is controlling the batmobile again". Meanwhile, the actor playing Max Schreck's son went on to play Zangief in the live-action Street Fighter film and Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and its prequel. He seems to have gone off the deep end in recent years though.

I never really cared for the first Batman film, but this one rocked. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman was so damned good, even if it's not true to the comic version. Every word she says just oozes sexiness. The one sticking point I have with this film is that Gotham really feels like a backlot...you never get the impression that more than a few hundred people live in what is supposed to be a stand-in for New York.

My favorite Batman movie. It shows perfectly what Gotham and Batman has always been about; troubled (and psycho) people dealing with their darkness in a dark corrupted city. Batman blends much more with the villains here, especially the scene in the end between him and Catwoman (and somehow it works perfectly). Tim Burton's weirdness also helps a lot showing this aspect of Batman and the world, and in this movie the weirdness is taken to 11. So much so, the movie was criticized in 1992 for being marketed to children.
