Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman performance is unsurpassed to this day. FYI the scene where she beheads the mannequins with her whip and then ropeskips away, was done on her first take. It was all her and she nailed it. She also put that bird in her mouth for real. Talk about dedication. 🖤

Michelle Pfeiffer didn't just bring the perfect attitude (and voice) to her portrayal of Catwoman, she was also pretty handy with the supervillain's whip. The scene where she breaks into a Gotham City department store and using her whip snaps the heads off four mannequins is a fun sequence, and it has a few cuts to tight shots of the heads falling off, so it's not clear if Pfeiffer is actually doing the whipping. And in most instances for scenes like this, the actor steps aside and allows a stuntperson to do it. But in a behind-the-scenes clip from the movie that surfaced in mid-February 2021 and instantly went viral, you see that Pfeiffer wasn't just doing the whip work in the scene but dropped all four heads in one take. After doing it and jump roping with the whip off screen you hear the crew give Pfeiffer a huge round of applause.

"Max Schreck" was actually the name of a German actor from the early 20th century, he played one of the first on-screen Vampires in the famous "Nosferatu" (1922). It seems Tim Burton chose that on purpose. Ironically "Schreck" is also the German word for "scare", like in being scared (dt: 'erschrecken' or 'erschreckt werden').
@solblackguy
@solblackguy 9 ай бұрын
He was also meant to be Penguin's brother, their parents would've had a second son they kept. But they dropped it from the original script. That's why Max is "just there" with no real impact in the story despite having some really serious looking scenes with Penguin that allude to something more important. It was also Penguin's whole motivation with killing first born sons.
@brandonspain12345
@brandonspain12345 11 күн бұрын
@@solblackguy For the most part, his scenes in the script stayed the same. The opening had a child looking at Penguin in the cage and his mother telling him not to stare at him. Later when Max is caged, that's when Penguin looks at him in the cage and says the same thing their mother told him, revealing they're brothers. That same script also had a car mechanic named "The Kid" who would've helped Batman find the hidden device under his Batmobile after he originally crashed into his garage. And he's the one who jammed Penguin's signal and after Batman crashed into Penguin's duck vehicle, The Kid shows up to give Batman the hand device to launch the missiles from all the Penguins before the fight, Batman thanked him and asks what his name is, and The Kid tells him "Dick" but prefers to be called "Robin" and disappears after Batman turns away and he smiles. Famously, Marlon Wayans was supposed to play "The Kid" and got paid for it and still gets paid everytime WB re-releases Batman Returns in the media to this day. However, Burton felt there were too many characters for a movie people complain already has too many characters, and Burton wasn't the biggest fan of Robin as a character, feeling he would've overexposed Batman's dark and mystic nature he had before. Famously, there's been an urban legend that Max Shreck was supposed to be Harvey Dent and at the end, Selina's taser damages Harvey's face. But none of this is true. Three scripts were made by Sam Hamm, Daniel Waters, and Wesley Strick and none of them had Harvey/Two Face as debunked by the writers. Hamm did say he wanted to tell Two Face's story before WB demanded Penguin and Burton wanting Catwoman while Daniel Waters thought of a Harvey cameo where he flips the coin and decided to back out of the plot for another movie. Despite not seeing what his take on Robin and Two Face could be, we two have two sources of what to imagine. In 1985, Burton and his wife wrote a treatment that featured a 10 year old orange haired Dick Grayson and later wears his red and green suit with a "devilish mask." And on the commentary for the 1989 movie, Burton claimed he wanted to explore Harvey Dent's "black and white persona" with Harvey having half of his face bleached white. Making him LITERALLY black and white much like how Burton made Joker LITERALLY have a permanent smile, Penguin LITERALLY has Penguin features, and Catwoman LITERALLY acts like a "Cat-Woman."

@@StreetHierarchy I'd actually never thought about that before, excellent point 🙂 I'm a huge fan of Burton's Batmans, I consider them to be infinitely better than the Nolan trilogy; Nolan's films are ok, but I do think they're vastly overrated (I know that's a controversial opinion to have in the world of contemporary cinema, but I stand by it). Burton's Batmans have true artistic value, and unlike Nolan's films these ones legitimately feel like a comic book come to life - Burton's films consistently maintained the campy comic-book aesthetic while blending it with gothic surrealism and elements of dark fantasy, whereas Nolan's films are so much weaker by comparison because he unwisely chose to ground the Batman universe in minimalistic realism, which was a mistake. Burton's films have it all - the best Batman (Keaton), the best villains (Nicholson is the best Joker; no disrespect to Heath Ledger, but Nicholson will always be the most iconic portrayal of the character), the most memorable musical score (Danny Elfman, bravo👌), and "Returns" is the ultimate expansion of all of that. One of the producers summed it up perfectly in a documentary I saw a while ago - "Batman 89" is Tim Burton in a Batman movie, "Returns" is Batman in a Tim Burton movie. That's why it's a masterpiece. And "Edward Scissorhands" also being the masterpiece that it is likely had a lot to do with it, again, excellent point you've made.

@@TheHurley108 Both artists did the most possible with their varied approach and thus are worthy of the highest respect. One chose painting, the other chose sculpting; that said, I enjoyed Tim Burton's films far more. I think Nolan wanted to be Batman while Burton was afraid he already was.

@@Narutoanime16g I'll be honest, I've never been a fan of The Dark Knight. I know, everyone loves it, lol I just never have; a couple of people who used to be some of my closest friends growing up have in fact actually stopped talking to me altogether just because I don't like it, kinda funny, also fairly petty. But I stand by it. "Batman Begins" is a solid movie, I really like that one, but the last two aren't that great, and The Dark Knight especially is very overrated. I have too many issues with it (glaring plot holes big and small, some terrible dialogue, some bad acting here and there, choppy pacing, etc.). Christian Bale's a cringy Batman (but not a bad Bruce Wayne, oddly enough), Michael Caine's Alfred is whiny and talks *way* too much, and I really think they rushed the whole thing with Two Face. Plus there's the whole underlying theme of worshipping the modern justice system, which is total garbage. Heath Ledger was a great Joker, but that's it, that's *literally* the only compliment I can hand the movie. The rest of it's pretty forgettable.

The Penguin and Catwoman were two of the popular villains from the 1960s TV show. They appeared quite often, along with The Joker and The Riddler. These four combined to be Batman's archnemeses in the 1966 TV movie, which aired prior to the shows 3-year run. The show was intended to be campy, so it would be good for laughs.

Batman Returns is a visually stunning film that captures the dark and brooding essence of the Batman character. The cast delivers solid performances, with Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman stealing the show. However, the plot is convoluted and the pacing can be uneven at times, making it feel like there are too many subplots competing for attention. Additionally, some of the more fantastical elements may not be to everyone's taste. Overall, while it may not be the strongest entry in the Batman franchise, it is still a worthwhile watch for fans of the character and those who enjoy Tim Burton's unique aesthetic.

Without spoiling much of anything, the sequels "Forever" and "& Robin" are soft reboots, "Begins" starts a new trilogy in a 100% different continuity, Man of Steel reboots everything in DC, and now director James Gunn is starting over again with younger actors. I don't know that it matters much anymore but recently WB has officially connected The Micheal Keaton Batman and Christopher Reeves Superman in the same continuity... but otherwise one probably wouldn't notice. Just popping up here with a personal opinion: I'm 46, I grew up with the Burton Batman movies. Keaton is my favorite Batman and though I really like the Nolan and Christian Bale Dark Knight trilogy and also enjoyed Robert Pattinson's last year's "The Batman" there's no denying this: Keaton and Pfeiffer have the best sexual chemistry on screen as Batman and Catwoman. They're both amazing actors who also have happened to have been involved in real life a few years prior to "Batman Returns " and that shows. Bale and Anne Hathaway had zero chemistry and Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz barely. With Keaton and Pfeiffer you feel their characters just want to get it on but they can't because they're antagonists. Hathaway's Catwoman flips to the good guys side at the last minute (what the heck?) and Zoe Kravitz's pretends she's a baddie but not really. Pfeiffer portrayed a real psycho Catwoman, not a bland alteration like in newer movies.

Although in some comics Catwoman tried stealing a Diamond which Batman recovered. She was always a bit peeved about losing the diamond to him on their first meeting. Even after they learned each other's identity she still was a bit sore about losing the Diamond. In a recent comic however Catwoman and Batman teamed up and Batman got down on one knee and proposed to Catwoman with the Diamond she stole the first time they ever met embedded in a ring that he had specially made for her.

His Name is Max Schreck. Schreck being the german word for scare, like when something scares you. Probably not intentional but who knows with Tim Burton. Edit: It's Shreck not Schreck. Sorry my bad.

Had a girlfriend once who loved this version of Catwoman and would cosplay her every chance she got, right down to the whip. Unfortunately we had to break up when the whip became a permanent addition, if you know what I mean and my safe word stopped working... maybe I shouldn't have chosen "More" on hindsight... Cool Reaction Trix, you really seemed to enjoy yourself 😺

The next one is "Batman Forever" directed by Joel Schumacher. While technically it's not "starting over," because I think it's supposed to take place in the same universe as the Burton Batman movies--it might as well be starting over. It's basically another director trying to imitate Burton's style. And of course, you have all new actors (except for Alfred). Honestly, I don't think either of the Schumacher ones are very good, even though people seem to only criticize the notorious follow-up "Batman and Robin."

Blue Catwoman and Penguin were villians on the original Batman TV series. Catwoman was played primarily by Julie Newmar with appearances by Eartha Kitt (3 episodes) and Lee Meriwether (2 episodes and the 1966 Batman TV movie). The Penguin was famously played by Burgess Meredith, Mick from the Rocky movies. These two villains along with the Joker and the Riddler were the primary villians that rotated appearances on the show. Other villians such as Mr Freeze, King Tut and Egghead also appeared but less frequently. Blue you don't know how close you are. In the original TV series Batman and Catwoman had a similar relationship love/hate also each story was always split over 2 episodes with a cliffhanger usually Batman in dire trouble in the first episode and the narrator always telling us to tune in next week same Bat Time same Bat Channel

Haha. I already knew this one is even more a Tim Burton Movie than a Batman movie. I love how you enjoy it. xD Another Batman i saw in Cinema. Three years have passed and i was already 11 at the time. Back then everyone expected a family friendly Batman. And Burton having completely free creative control lead to the darkest Batman in over a decade. The reception was .. hard... Dads went with their kids to cinema. When the movie was over the kids were crying and the dads looked slightly traumatized as well. It screwed up a multi million dollar deal with Mc Donalds toys. And Burton was asked to give up the Batman movies and make more own projects instead. xD Still a masterpiece and around twenty years ahead of its time. Max Shreck has two meanings. Schreck is German for horror in sense of being scared. And Max Shreck is the name of the actor who played Nosferatu in the old Black an White movie. Oh and one more fun fact in case if you wanna cosplay Catwoman: Michelle Pfeiffer was literally vacuum sucked into the vinyl suit. She said she could bearely breathe inside it.

Yes, I actually liked Batman Forever. It was a refreshing change from the gothic horror movie that Returns was. I know that Batman is supposed to be dark, but Batman Returns was TOO MUCH. Also, it wasn’t even about Batman it was about the Penguin. At least in Forever we get more screen time with Batman/Bruce Wayne, unlike in the Tim Burton movies

8:48 Cause they think they don't deserve her attention. 10:24 You're not directed by Tim Burton. 11:04 You don't know what she's doing with her free evenings. 14:43 And that's why Burton was fired from any more movies. Once McDonald's saw this and Catwoman stretching around in tight leather, they canceled the deal, despite having toys just about ready. 22:16 Be careful what you wish for... 24:25 Well, that's what iron maiden looks like. Annette Bening was originally cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in 1991 after Tim Burton saw her in The Grifters (1990) and thought she’d be perfect. Michelle Pfeiffer was secretly devastated and even mentioned to Jack Nicholson, her Witches of Eastwick (1987) co-star, how much she’d have liked to play Catwoman. When Annette became pregnant with Warrren Beaty’s baby and had to drop out, Jack brought up Michelle’s name to Tim Burton and she was hired. Later, Michelle starred with Jack in 1994’s Wolf, about modern-day werewolves.

11:00 - "How does she have a leather suit" in her closet? She didn't. She had a vinyl / pleather raincoat that she cut up and sewed into a skin-tight outfit for herself. How anyone could simply cut up a raincoat and re-stitch it together at odd angles and scraps without a pattern and **multiple** fittings, on the first try: movie magic. Or maybe that's one of this Catwoman's magical cat powers. At any rate, she nailed it, and created one of the single most iconic comic-character outfits of all time. The glittery black or purple spandex of the TV show's many Cat-women were all sexy and beautiful. The many costumes that the comic book artists came up with were all important in their own way. This off-kilter, unhinged, hand-stitched-by-a-mentally-unstable-person-after-a-near-death-experience body suit was edgy and BDSM and raw as hell. The Halle Berry film tried (and for my money, succeeded more than many people give it credit for; acknowledging its many flaws I was still entertained). The Anne Hathaway character was cool, with the goggles / ears thing that was pretty clever. Zoe Kravitz' character had depth. But this is THE Catwoman for a lot of people, myself included. Nobody else's character and costume- each on their own and together as a package- has come close, IMHO.
