Alan Burnett considers this to be the best Riddler episode, partially because of how the riddles were presented in a "hidden" manner, rather than just verbally.
@cje49911 ай бұрын
That final scene personifies the Riddler in my opinion. Also... blimey, poor Joker and Two-Face putting up with that!
@jonasquinn797711 ай бұрын
I feel like Riddler’s breakdown at the end is the most important part of the episode. It can be easy to forget sometimes that Riddler is legitimately mentally unwell and to dismiss him as just a guy that likes riddles but seeing him have a full on meltdown at not knowing the answer to something shows us that he genuinely belongs in Arkham.

This episode is a good example of why Batman is not responsible for his villains. Riddler could have turned over a new leaf but he was too obsessed with beating Batman that he couldn’t stop himself from doing villainy. Sometimes people are just programmed to differently to truly change.
@andrewdiaz352911 ай бұрын
Except the other times Riddler specifically and others DO change. And the fact that cynically believing that there are some people who can't change goes against Batman's original reason for the no killing rule, that being him believing literally anyone can change and become better and killing them prevents that
@jonasquinn797711 ай бұрын
Alternatively it’s proof that while he may not create them Batman plays a role in encouraging some of them. As we see when Riddler thinks Batman is dead he hangs up his hat and decides to retire completely.

I get you but they’ve said a few times over the years that the main reason why there are so few Riddler episodes is because he’s insanely difficult to write for. Think about it, you need to write several riddles that make sense, are difficult enough that you believe he’s smart but not so difficult that you don’t feel like Batman pulled the answer out of his ass. All on top of the usual stuff that goes into making an episode.
@jp381311 ай бұрын
@@jonasquinn7977 Even the riddles were letdowns in The Batman (2022). Some of them were actually traditional ones that you hear in school. I was really hoping for Christopher Nolan to include the Riddler in TDKR.

Being Gotham Criminals is why I loved Batman Arkham Origins online multiplayer. I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea but I loved it. It had similar controls to Gears of War and was a 3 v 3 v 2 situation. Joker Gang vs Bane Gang vs Batman & Robin, good times but WB shut off service to online multiplayer for this mode.

The Riddler is my second favorite Batman villain. I really wish there were more episodes with him. But I understand that he's a hard character to write because you have to come up with very clever riddles for his plans.

It does seem noteworthy, for better or worse, that SO many episodes in this part of the series are like “Actually the criminals all have themselves to blame for their situation and every single one of them is utterly incapable of redemption.” Like on the one hand I get it, cause it’s more fun for Riddler to stay the Riddler and Ivy to stay Poison Ivy, but I do feel like the tone of these episodes might be different if they were made today.
@WhiteFangofWar11 ай бұрын
It does seem a bit out of place for a show that usually shows its villains a lot of sympathy. The only ones who really seemed sincere about it were Penguin and Harley Quinn, but of course fate/the writers conspire to have them suffer emotional crises that put them back into their roles as villains. I guess the real question is whether the villain has the inner strength and desire to overcome the compulsion that started them down their path to begin with, and Nygma just *cannot* stop wanting to feel like the ultimate genius. Even if everyone else adores him he still needs to prove once and for all to himself that he's smarter than Batman.
@pegusus1234611 ай бұрын
I think in a less episodic show with a broader focus on continuity like Arrow or Gotham, you might eventually get some of the villains reforming. Like I can see a long-running Batman cartoon where the Riddler is making a killing doing riddle-videos and tricks on KZbin, Harley and Ivy are low-key vigilantes, Two-Face resolves his mental instability, etc. But something like this, you always want to be able to pull those villains out of your deck again.
@jonasquinn797711 ай бұрын
I think it’s important to keep in mind that most of Batman’s rogues gallery are mentally unwell so it’s not so easy for them to change. It’s tragic to watch several of them come so close to turning over a new leaf only to fall victim to their conditions
@WhiteFangofWar11 ай бұрын
@@jonasquinn7977Indeed, Riddler is the sole exception to the rule where the public automatically shuns any rogue who tries a reform, being part of the problem. Especially Croc and Penguin.

Fun fact in a series of comics based on the animated series, there's a story where Riddler decides to give up on crime and sends Batman riddles telling him about what crimes other criminals are doing, only to get caught by batman because he was subconsciously leaving clues to where he was hiding in his riddles. He physically can't stop himself from being the Riddler.
@welshbandit720811 ай бұрын
So i love the video game idea. Now i imagine you probably start off extremely small time. Then eventually you make it to small time. Then at some point you can either go the mob route, or the supervillain route. Or maybe mob first, but while you're doing character stuff, Batman destroys the mob you're in, and that's what leads to you joining in with one of the super villains🤔 Idk if you could become a supervillain in your own route. Personally this sounds more like DLC than anything else.🤔

There’s actually a couple games that are similar to what they pitched Arkham origins online which had teams of four with bane and joker themed weapons and outfits and would have the chance to call in bane or joker and play as them while two other players play as Batman and Robin and there’s Gotham city imposters which was a more cartoony tf2 style fps with Batman and joker themed factions that would fight in various maps in Gotham
