When Joker appeared at the party, it was the first time many saw Ledger with the makeup, scaring Michael Cain and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Alfred and Rachel). Michael Cain was too terrified to remember his lines, and Maggie Gyllenhaal was legitimately scared when Ledger was holding her face.

Joker's story about the origin of his scars keeps changing. It illustrates how untrustworthy Joker is. You can't believe anything he's saying. It's actually a reference to a Joker story from the comic books called Batman: The Killing Joke. In it, Joker provides a tragic explanation for how he became The Joker, claiming that he was once an aspiring comedian who was struggling to support his pregnant wife. Desparate for money, he gets involved in a robbery at a chemical factory, encounters Batman, and falls into a vat of chemicals that bleach his skin. He also discovers that his pregnant wife has been murdered. These events drive him insane, and The Joker is born. But afterwards, he admits that it probably didn't happen that way at all and says "If I'm going to have an origin story, I prefer it to be multiple choice." So the truth about how he got that way is never really clear.
@najhoant

They actually worked the whole "multiple choice past" thing into later stories, having him constantly make up different stories about his past. The Arkham games kept it, as did the animated series

She said she wanted to know about Batman's past. This is probably one of those times when watching out of order might really work out. She's made a prequel out of Batman Begins by starting here. I'm confident that because Christopher Nolan did a good job of making these movies complete and not dependent on one another, it'll work out watching them like this.

That's what the Joker does, he scrambles your moral compass.

I remember that outrage and agreed with it at the time. The only film I saw Ledger in prior to TDK was "The Patriot" (2000). He was very good in that, but so very far from ever being The Joker, especially after Jack Nicholson had previously set the bar so high at the time. But like the rest of the skeptics I was wrong as you said. Ledger is and always will be THE Joker and I sorely missed him in TDKR sequel.

Ledger's character in this film is a fantastic villain: always three steps ahead of the authorities, always manipulating, always misdirecting. (Almost too much so to be believable, but that's movie magic; as much as this is supposed to be "real world believable plausibility" superheroes, his plans depend so much on things going just so. But we go along with it.) I do not believe his claim that he is motivated purely by chaos and instinct; the detail and chess-like precision of his plans is too meticulous to be truly chaotic. But he does enjoy the chaos that ensues, I'll grant that. As a foil to Batman's rigid discipline, this villain's (seemingly!) chaotic style is a good match. Ledger's character was dark, brooding, obviously insane, but also calculating. The way he lied and told the truth in such a way that it seemed you couldn't tell what were lies and what was truth: a master manipulator. He somehow knew exactly how to push someone's buttons to hit them where they hurt the most. Ledger did an awesome job portraying this villain. However, having said all of that, I do not like this version of "The Joker." To me, this villain is not The Joker at all, just some sadistic villain who happens to wear clown makeup over a set of Cheshire Smile scars. He doesn't laugh nearly enough; we do not see him enjoying the "comedy" of his work nearly enough. We get a few sarcastic, ironic "ho, ho, hee, hee" moments, and a couple cackles here and there. But to my mind, THE Joker's whole thing is he's all about the manic enjoyment of life's sick jokes. He's not "ironic," he's sincere in his laughter. If he has his manic-depressive swings, the manic wins out as the dominant feature, and I simply didn't see that in Ledger's performance. Much of that is on the director, though: in trying to make his Batman trilogy as "dark and gritty" as possible, the Joker's brand of manic sadistic clown is too flashy and flamboyant. So Chris Nolan worked with Heath Ledger to develop this dark and brooding bad-guy, loosely based on a laughing clown "Joker-esque" villain. Effective, but not a good Joker, IMHO. IMHO, Jack Nicholson's Joker is simply THE best live-action Joker ever. He laughed, he cackled, he took tremendous joy in his sick atrocities. Say what you will about Tim Burton's style, Nicholson's Joker is, in my opinion, the single best live-action portrayal of that character, ever.

@x_trio_3_po333
@x_trio_3_po333 2 жыл бұрын
Right! Its just crazy! They need to suggest watching the 3rd movie of any trilogy FIRST. Like LoTR you properly start with RotK, and THEN the Two Towers, and finally the FotR. Ditto with beginning with Matrix Revolutions, THEN Reloaded, and finally, "The Matrix". Congress should make this viewing order the law of the land. Also, with a TV series like LOST, you obviously begin with the Series Finale in season Six, and finish at the Pilot episode in season 1. Now, where did I put my medication?

You either die the hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain/Some men just want to watch the world burn - pretty much adages that sadly ring true in this life. Nolan's trilogy is truly groundbreaking with indelible turns by Bale and a powerhouse supporting cast. But the bittersweet wild card is the late, great Heath Ledger's justifiable Oscar-winning turn as the devilish Joker - beyond iconic with layers upon layers in his characterization. You s/also see BATMAN BEGINS & THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS as well as visit Tim Burton's pair of films and yes you are correct Val Kilmer did one and one as the Caped Crusader. Nice job as always with your watch.

Batman Begins is the origin story you're looking for. It's the first of the Nolan trilogy, preceding this one. I don't know how you missed it, but no worries, that's what you're looking for. 😉 Imo, it's the best of the Batman origins. If you find you like the character enough, 'Batman: The Animated Series' does a really good job of fleshing out his origin/background even more. It's the animated version that aired in the 90s; very faithful to the comics and much more mature than the average Saturday-morning cartoons of the time. They even made a few movies out of them, a couple of which aired in theaters. Edit: Also, how Rachel knows who Batman is, is shown in 'Begins'. Katie Holmes plays the character in the first, with Maggie Gyllenhaal taking over in 'Dark Knight'. They had to recast, because Katie was involved in other projects. Just a heads up, in case you're like, "Who is this?!" 😛

Yeah, the Joker is a liar. Lies are chaotic and he's an agent of chaos. He lied about his scars, he lied about Harvey and Rachel's locations, he lied to Two-Face about not having plans, and I think he lied about the detonators for the ships. He told them they detonated the bombs on the other ship, but it would have been more in his character to have the detonator connected to the bomb on their own ship. If they decided to blow up the other ship, they would have blown up themselves. Poetic justice and a "funny" joke.

Definitely need to watch Batman Begins because it is the first movie in this particular trilogy of Batman movies. The third movie is The Dark Knight Rises.

Man I love Batman movies there just the best. Also to aid your confusion I have 3 explanations 1 this is actually the second movie that they made the first one is called Batman begins and the one after the one you just watched is called the dark knight rises so I recommend watching those 2 movies as well. 2 even in the comic nobody knows the jokers true origins before he became what he is now so yes he lied every time he tells someone how he got his scars. 3 ( truth be told this last one is just a fact) the actor who played the joker actually spent a night in an abandoned hotel to get himself ready to play this role. Love your videos you do such a good job😊👍❤

Like Batman, there are different versions of the Joker. This version came up with the idea of making his smile scars. The previous version played by Jack Nicholson was the result of plastic surgery after being shot in the face. His origin is always something of a mystery, we just know he's a homicidal maniac. However, you should take a look at the old, more humor-based Batman TV series. Old Hollywood heart throb Caesar Romero really put Joker on the map with his fun, manic characterization. The clown mask Joker wears in the bank heist in this movie is actually a little homage to Caesar Romero, who first shows up wearing the same mask while impersonating an opera singer.

I truly like you and your shows. You are a sweet, lovely person. This is one of my favorite movies, and I don't consider myself a superhero fan at all. The script is complex and tight, and the performances here excellent.

Even if you know a little bit about the Batman universe, when you hear the name "Harvey Dent", you know what's coming...."Why so serious?" what an iconic line. What else could have Heath Ledger accomplished had he lived....he was already a fantastic actor, but this role really made him, Love Michael Caine as Alfred, well, love him full stop and Morgan Freeman, of course.

The movie before this is "Batman Begins" and it gives you the origin of Batman and Bruce Wayne. It's also excellent.

Nice. The single greatest superhero movie of all time. To this day Ledger's performance still amazes me, and brings me to tears.

I hated Batman’s voice in this but I liked the movie. The first Batman with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson will always be my fav but Heath Ledgers Joker was brilliant. So good. I liked The Joker movie too.
