This is perhaps one of the best scenes in all of the batman-lore that best describes the character.
In "The Dark Knight Returns" after being overwhelmed by the mutant leader, Bruce ventures deep into the batcave to regain his strength.

And he shouldn’t. That trauma, anger and vengeance is what drives Batman. And because of that, so many people live. And Gotham is safer. If I was a time traveller and had a choice to prevent their deaths, I wouldn’t.

It's not just about the parent's death. He changed completely because of that incident. A new identity born inside him at a young age. Batman is his true identity not Bruce wayne. After retiring he went back to playing as Bruce wayne but he can't hide behind that fake identity for long. Which is why he says "I'm not finished yet". The bat represents vengence and his fight for justice. That's why he says looking at the bat, "you are never finished with me".

This is hands down my favorite Batman scene of all time. I actually teared up when I watched this. I'm so glad to see other people get this. Batman is borderline insane. Its what compels a man to come from the brink of death, and then willingly reinvite himself back to it. Batman is a creation of Bruce's warped psyche, and it will forever compel him to return to the mantle. I'd like to think that Bruce has had this conversation in his head THOUSANDS of times before. Bruce possesses more than just will power. Will power, no matter how strong, will fade. Bruce acts in a manner which transcends that. He is afflicted, almost as if he had a disease forcing him into this life. He is a multi-billionaire. He has friends and loved ones. He has many admirers - both of Bruce and Batman. Yet he has always turns his back on all of this, in favor of isolation. There is NO amount of will power on earth that could keep a man from these distractions as long as Bruce has. His actions are NOT the behavior of someone operating solely on will power. It's the behavior of someone who is tormented.

I think it is easy to categorize Batman as insane and while some his behavior does border on the extreme, I feel it does disservice to the character to simply call it an obsession or compulsion. The thing is Batman makes the choice consciously, he makes the choice to put on the suit and go out every night despite being beaten to pulp. It's because he feels that he's making a difference; if he can save one innocent life from being killed, it was all worth it. It's one thing to blindly act without thinking, it's entirely another to devote yourself forever to a higher cause.
@fatboyRAY24
@fatboyRAY24 7 жыл бұрын
vars28 Sure, but the video makes it seem like he hasn't a choice but to keep fighting, and that to an extent, he's not even in control of himself. Bruce desired to remain retired, but was dragged back into the streets of Gotham by his "true" self. And I honestly think he couldn't stop fighting against crime even if he wanted to, and that by definition would make him obsessive compulsive.

As someone with Bipolar Disorder this film may have changed my life. My entire existence I've suffered from anxiety and depression. I thought the best way to treat these conditions was to remove myself from things involving risk and danger. I thought it would go away or at least diminish over time. Of course it didn't. This scene made me realize that instead of avoiding situations that made me anxious, I instead had to actively seek them out as much as possible until I desensitized myself. Now in situations involving risk I no longer feel the crippling stranglehold of anxiety, but rather the rush of excitement that comes from confronting the unknown.

@Gadget-Walkmen

@@ocean7849 You don't need everything "commented" out at all, you need subtly and nuanced which the movie doesn't brilliantly towards batman and story. @Lite727

@@Gadget-Walkmen I disagree. The book has a lot more story to it and reading Bruce’s thought process and and comments just make pulls you into all the action and gives you a raw psychological character study of him and his mental state. Also to add to that there’s just a really wet uncomfortable feeling I get reading the book rather than watching the movie, like idk I could feel that Frank Miller wrote this every night coming back from somewhere he nearly got mugged. Very unnerving, uneasy feeling it gives off. Chilling.

What many people don't realise is all of the Batman villains are somehow, part of Batman's own personality atleast that's how the writer's have conceived them. Joker, Two-Face, Mr.Freeze, Bane have all had personal loss of some sort, and Batman could have easily turned out like one of them, had he let his hatred and vengeance consume him. This is why Batman has a strict no-killing rule, because that's what separating him from the rest of crazy folk in Gotham.

This is gonna sound really cheesy and hella cringe but it’s just the truth just bear with me. When ever I’m at my lowest moment and dark thoughts start to cloud my mind, whenever I feel so down bad and my mind rots with depression and anxiety I literally think of this scene, the music especially. I ask myself ‘What would Batman do’. This scene makes me stronger because I think to myself someone like Bruce Wayne in this situation has every reason to quit. He’s nearly 60 years old, an alcoholic, his son died in his arms after getting tortured and blown up by the Joker, his superhero friends all abandoned him, he just ass kicked by some amateur street punk half his age, got beat to shit and humiliated, a little girl had to save him on top of that an army of edgy street punks are coming to lay siege to his city with military grade weapons enough to take on the fucking national guard. How easy would it have been just to lose all hope and call it quits and just die peacefully in that cave. Return to the dirt and be reunited with his mother and father once again in a better place. How easy would it have been to just drop there right on the floor and give up. How easy would it have been to succumb to his painful injuries (my guy took a fucking knee to the mouth 😬 and and shoulder chomped off with pointy grills). How goddamn easy would it have been just to curl up and cry after getting his 60 year old ass humiliated by a millennial? Through and through it all he kept pushing. He looked to the darkness to find his childhood terror. To remember the thing he is. The nightmare. The myth. The monster. The very reason the filth that plagues his city breath easier during hours of daylight. The horrifying thing that this world gave birth to the moment those pearls fell to the floor in crime alley. He remembers who is, what he is. He finds his strength in the cave, and regains the will to fight again. This scene is the single most powerful Batman moment in all of his history and lore since goddamn May 27 1939 through August 18 2021 the time of me writing this comment and it will years to come and onwards. This scene is the ultimate motivation and the greatest demonstration of Batman’s sheer will power there will ever be. Beautiful scene. These two films are nothing short of masterpiece. 👌🏾

I think Bruce somehow sees the bat as a symbol of his parents dying. Because HE'S absolutely terrified of it, he does the best thing you can do. Become what you fear. When he says, "You're never finished with me," he's telling the bat that he won't succumb to Insanity. Peter Weller and Michael Emerson were brilliant. They didn't just imitate Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill. They made it their own. Remember. This is a different universe that the Animated Series. Yes, his idea in itself is insane and short-sighted. Dressing up as a giant bat and beating people up In the middle of the god damn night is insane....he would do better to promote education and small businesses with his wealth for LONG TERM CHANGE but instead he does this. Of the fractured psyche of Batman, and the darkness that he keeps contained with iron will. As to how he learned to harness it, to not give into insanity, and serve the higher purpose, or justice and preservation of life. A short story, but nonetheless quite telling as to why writers adore the dark knight as a character.

Please Matt Reeves, please please please please use this comic/movie/story as a inspiration for your upcoming Batman movie. Zack Snyder started with the Frank Miller inspired Batman, you need to keep that going. Show us how he got so brute, how much mental pain and stress it brings to Bruce being Batman for so many years. Show us WHY Batman is so awesome. Show that Bruce Wayne is "a hollow shell, a rusty trap" and Batman is the only thing that keeps him from going crazy.

It's the Batman reaching out from his parent's grave. Everything his father taught him became the Batman. The Batman is his parents continuing to live, it's also his love for his parents turning into the Batman. The Batman emerged and comforted him in his parents death. It's with him always. No Batman live action film has dealt with the Batman and the death of the Wayne’s in this way. Hands down my favourite Batman scene ever

I think Bruce is talking to his Batman alter ego. No matter how beaten and broken he may be, the Batman will never stop, he'll never be done acting through Bruce until it gets him killed for good, and that's why Alfred's always commenting on how suicidal his behavior is. As for why he's smiling, I think it might be him coming to term with the fact that they are one and the same; he and Batman.

don fan Bruce is talking to the bat as far as I understand, it seem to be the same style of bat-apparition that 'broke through his window' when he was having the visions of his dead parents and hearing the voice of Batman in his head. What I gather from this here monologue is he's saying he isn't finished yet (finished like defeated) and that the Batman must go back into the fray. It's not so much that Batman possesses Bruce, but it's more like some people say; Bruce Wayne is the mask Batman wears, and not the other way around.

Ben Affleck's Batman has less than nothing to do with The Dark Knight Returns version of Batman. Batman in The Dark Knight Returns was still the same Batman we all know. He was just old. He still believed in compassion and morals and was against murder. Ben Affleck's Batman was the opposite of that.
