Hezekiah Ramirez There are plenty of superman fans like myself who enjoy this interpretation, so please speak for yourself. Superman was not useless, sometimes things go wrong, sometimes things happen that are unexpected, sometimes the notion of trusting others blows up in your face. I prefer a superman that reflects real things humans have to go through to validate him as symbol in the first place. Making him this faultless, perfect, omnipotent and omniscient being is thematically and emotionally pointless, because that's not what we have here in reality.

Snyder lacks the narrative ability to tell an epic story. He can create grand cinematic murals that are visually stunning; but his idea of building a plotline is selling a series of impressive visuals and leading the moviegoer through an array of emotional reactions. Establishing a clear believable plot/themes and clarifying character motivations are secondary, possibly even afterthoughts.I picked up on religious themes. The idea of ascension. Young Bruce seeming to ascend while the bats swirled around him was perhaps symbolizing a hero ascending not to power but to a higher calling. The soil rising off Superman's coffin also a way to indicate fate still had a purpose for him. Then there were all the visions and dreams. Luthor's creation of Doomsday began with a baptism of Zod's corpse, a blasphemous consecration using human blood. There was the kryptonite spear which Batman was going to use to kill Superman, possibly a loose allusion to the spear used to pierce Christ's side. All the talk about gods and devils. Doomsday's name is basically synonymous with Armageddon. Have a feeling there was a reason this film was released Easter weekend.Jesse Eisenberg was horrible as Lex Luthor. He acted more like the Toyman or the Riddler. An authentic Lex Luthor might've given the film some cohesion and clarity. And the JLA computer file scene might've seemed less shoehorned in if it was Luthor seen viewing them. Batman and Wonder Woman could discover them later, looking at the metahuman file name. But Luthor looking at them or showing them to the senator and general earlier better explains his motivations.As I interpreted the film, Luthor wants ultimate power and control. Yet there are these metahumans emerging and that threatens that. For the most part they've been in the shadows until Superman arrives, though he still is trying to figure out his role among humans. The attack on Wayne employees is the tipping point for Batman who has already faced so much loss. Batman is being nudged down a darker path. Wonder Woman went into hiding long ago and is only around because she has suspicions Lex has been investigating her. She wants to learn how much he knows. All three heroes doubting their ability to improve society/mankind allows Luthor to be the puppetmaster. Then Superman realizes he can't save everyone after his vision of Pa Kent, but he can make a difference. Superman saves Batman from his dark descent. When Batman saves Ma Kent he seems energized, like a hero with a rediscovered purpose. Batman convinces Wonder Woman to stick around and find the others. His later visit with Luthor convinces him more than ever that he'll need to plan for the battles ahead rather than be obsessed with punishment.So much potential to tell a great story, but WB would rather send fans out on Easter egg hunts.

+torgodog "his idea of building a plotline is selling a series of impressive visuals and leading the moviegoer through an array of emotional reactions" Great insight. I liked that you tackled it in such a light. That's one thing I want to convey when I talk about this movie in the future. I see Synder's strengths and I'm not saying he doesn't know how to create great visuals. I also don't take credit away from the enormity of making a blockbuster movie like this. It takes a lot of technical know how. I definitely feel it was WBs job to step in and keep him in check. He would be great as the cinematographer for these films. He should, however, not be the visionary for any future DCEU properties as it has become very obvious that he simply doesn't understand the characters.
@freman0078 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your summation of Lex Luthor, and also the comparison to Wilson Fisk, which I hadn't picked up myself. You're right. Even villains are the heroes of their own story. Many are not as self aware as Heatwave and Captain Cold in Legends of Tomorrow who, when asking themselves the question, "why do we commit crime?" respond with "we like money, and we don't like working for it." Lex prides himself on being three steps ahead of everyone else, and it annoys him when an alien like Brainiac outthinks him. Being physically outmatched by Superman doesn't trouble him. He expects that. However he hates the idea of someone catching him flat footed.

The movie lacks a moral centre. Things just happen because Snyder thinks "its cool" no real story no real investment unless you too think its cool.
@Trencher13758 жыл бұрын
+wonder fag Visuals are a incredibly important part of the story yes. And Zack Snyder is a visual master. But when the story lacks a moral centre and the characters are not well written (like they just do stuff that looks cool at the moment) then that hurts the movie alot. The story is the meat of the meal and the visuals are the garnish or presentation if you will. Interestingly I read an article in the Times (of all places) that also said that the story had meaning. It said that the movie said something important about Bush era politics against Terrorism. But it never made clear exactly what the movie said. I disagree strongly. I dont think it said anything but perhaps you could tell me what you think it said? Also the movie was full of emotion I give you that.
@Trencher13758 жыл бұрын
+Auron1Roxas2 It comes off as artificial and constructed just so Snyder can put the things he thinks are cool on screen. What is presented is not moral its opinions. And from the way you word yourself it is easy to see that you are not a person that care about the difference. Philosophies and social interaction are not just "hoops" other people set for you to jump through to get what you want. There is a difference between having morals and just being a self serving person even if your Ayn Rand books tells you differently.

He was a genetically engineered soldier who only knew how to get things done through force, and was programmed to want to save the livelihood of Krypton, so that's what he does. That's all he knows to do. Superman, Batman, Luthor...none of the other main characters in this entire series have that well-thought through character establishment.

I discovered your channel today. I applaud your sharp restrained delivery and witty sarcasm, with focus on the broken characters. I wrote a review of B. v S. last week and had to draft it many times to keep the restraint that you easily project, comparing it more to Dawn of the Justice Lords rather than Justice League. I've been an avid comic collector since the early 1970's and accept the need to revamp the heroes and keep the story relevant, but this movie was an outright betrayal of the core-values and motivations, not a revamp or retelling. I read another review calling them "Murder-Man & the Hypocrite", and I don't think he's far off, because they weren't Batman and Superman.

"This seemed to be a prequel to the "Justice Lords" (DC's alternate world, dark twisted and murderous version of the Justice League). This film takes two of the most morally concrete, iconic heroes in American culture and perverts them into Anti-heroes who maim and kill on a whim. Is THIS what Truth, Justice and the American way are supposed to mean? The plot is cluttered and confusing, the action is needlessly dark, and the spirit of the film is perverse... Thoughtless Destruction, routine unnecessary-Killing, Branding defeated enemies, Amputating the limbs of an opponent (and thats the heroes). I've been a loyal comic fan for over 40 years; DC comics, you should be ashamed. This is supposed to be the Justice League, not SPAWN."

choco bo It's really awful how many people still defend this moment. It's hardly like it has only one problem, there's a fuckton of problems. Firstly, Supes would have said "my mother" not Martha. People say it "humanized" Supes to Batman. What a load of bollocks. Batman is supposed to be a great DETECTIVE. It's made pretty clear he knows Supes is Clark Kent. You mean to tell me Bats did zero research on Clark to find out who he is or how he grew up? Or even just watch the news and see Clark save a bunch of people? And even if we accept he didn't do the research or is just worried Clark might not "stay good" (the convo with Alfred) then it still makes no sense because having a mom named Martha CHANGES NONE OF THAT. It's just lazy writing pretending to be deep and yet a bunch of people swallowed it because it had a nice hero shot. Depressing 😒

I agree with you. Whether it was the studio wanting everything now without setting it up properly or Zach Snyder's visual style lacking substance, this movie was a mess. I am having a hard time talking myself into seeing it again in the theaters. I don't want to reward Warner Brothers for screwing this up. Superman's death cheapens it for the entire DC franchise. My only question is whether they will kill someone else off just to keep the threat of death alive. Like Marvel did with Quicksilver. so stupid. thanks for listening.
@jimmydean20678 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, I don't hate the movie but it left me frustrated at how easily it could have been better. Wonder Woman needed more screen time and should've have been the catalyst that united Bruce and Clark. Funny, she was gone for 100 years because of the "violence of men" yet they have swords and shields in Paradise Island. I know she criticizes mankind in the comics but war isn't foreign to her. I love the look she gives Bruce when he put's his hand on her and seeing her fighting Doomsday was awesome. The picture thing was ridiculous, I would have loved it if it was an anonymous video of her flying her invisible airplane. OMG, imagine the laughs if that would have been the case. The Nolanverse has forever made things too dark perhaps. Superman has enhanced senses, one of those being super smell and he didn't even notice Luthor's urine in the flask marked "Granny's Peach Tea", which is why Senator Finch was acting weird. He has x-ray vision and didn't see a bomb inside a wheelchair let alone smell explosive material, something a trained dog can do. Yet, the movie put's in the effort to show you he can hear Bruce Wayne's secret communication with Alfred. So why the hell did Superman stop to intimidate Batman and let a truck with guys shooting machine guns and rockets get away. Why didn't he stop them? Not to mention in the Man of Steel where his senses are so sensitive he gets panic attacks as a child. If Batman is a genius prepared for anything or at very least wise from experience and has his suspicions of Superman. Why didn't he have something to show for it 2 years after the disaster?! Luthor found a large amount of Kryptonite, has Zod's cadaver to experiment with and access to the Kryptonian ship allowing him to manipulate Zod's dna. I know Lex has a government contract but couldn't Bruce Wayne/Batman get access to the ship at some level let alone find stray Kryptonian weaponry or at least experiment with radiation knowing Superman is a living being. Also look how big that Kryptonite was and he ends up with a handful of grenade rounds and a damned caveman spear. The postapocalyptic fight sequence was terrible, the fanatics have guns and are running up to Batman instead of shooting him. The whole Martha thing was garbage, I guess that's Batman's Kryptonite. None of my critiques are of hate but how so many holes could have easily been plugged, so don't take them personally. I didn't even list all of them, being so many.

Don't forget this: once writers made the choice - let's use Superman death - , could it be the wrong decision or not, they should have put it "a must". I try to explain, I mean, ok, I get Superman goes for the extreme sacrifice, cause he's the only one who can use that krypto-spear battling Doomsday, so that's it, he has to go... EXCEPT HE'S NOT! In many scenes during final fight we see Wonder Woman facing Doomsday, using melee weapons (shield and sword), not to mention she probably has a better training in melee weapons: she even cut of one of his arms, right? Right?!? Then why the fuck Superman goes in knowing kryptonite will drain his power if someone else can do it without having any possible problem using the krypto-spear?
@Alachia8 жыл бұрын
no..... it has to be me!!!! Oh man. The whole thing was so contrived to set up the Death of Superman. Trying to wrap your head around "why didn't this and that happen because it would have been more logical" will eat you up with this movie. Not to mention small cuts would have worked in combat as well. Continuous, fast action. They could have spent the time passing off the weapon and using kryto gas to wear him down instead of going for the sacrificial blow. I mean at this point, that part of the city is fucked and they already tried a nuke. It would have been smarter to try and contain and weaken Doomsday instead of giving up earth's mightiest hero... auahghdshaligjgj!! sigh.
@ulfednir8 жыл бұрын
Alachia Queen Yeah, that's it. And this is just how you recognize there's no real epic moment, just cheap garbage: when you see the highest mountain made of simplier ways to solve the situation, but no, the protagonist goes for useless sacrifice to obtain a result he could get using just brain. The Sadness is strong in this movie.
@VioletGrey8 жыл бұрын
Honest thoughts on it; no fanboying bullshit, just my honest observations: 1. This thing is at least as strong and as fast as Superman, maybe even more so. 2. Batman can't fight it head on and he only has one grenade left. We know this because we saw him construct three of them in an earlier scene, and he used two on Superman. 3. Wonder Woman was STRUGGLING to hold Doomsday in place. If she had let up for even a moment it would have taken advantage of it and they would have lost their shot. 4. The only way to ensure the spear would pierce the creature would be to drive it in; can't risk throwing it. 5. Superman is barely able to stand, much less fight. I'd be more inclined to agree if you were to talk about how he shouldn't even be able to fly at that point. But he's got the ball, the only clear path and he's the only one who can make sure it hit's it's mark. Doomsday is going to blow again at some point soon so they don't have time for a second try. 6. Superman being, well, Superman - he's not going to risk either Bruce or Diana's lives. And this thing being of Krypton he's going to feel it's his responsibility to deal with. 7. Sacrificing himself for a world that fears and rejects him is the conclusion of Supermans arc through two movies. In Man of Steel he chooses Earth and humanity as where he belongs; he chooses Earth over Krypton. In Batman v Superman he chooses humanity OVER HUMAITY. That is to say, he chooses to sacrifice himself for humanity despite the fact that, as a whole, we probably don't deserve it. We can say, "woulda, coulda, shoulda" all day long but, just like with Zod's death in Man of Steel, the scene was purposely constructed in a way that left this as the only possible outcome. There are no other outs that don't also come along with, "and then Doomsday could do X.Y and Z" an then the whole dosey-doe starts over again; just like when he had to kill Zod the first time.But aside from the fact that Superman, who moments before couldn't even swim, can now fly with the spear, the scene maintains it's own internal logic. Each character operates within their character and within the limits of their established abilities. Now one could argue that they shouldn't have written the scene with no way out other than for Superman to die, and that's fair. You don't have to like the scene. And yes, they could have written it differently, but that doesn't mean they HAVE to. And the fact that it is disliked doesn't meant the scene doesn't work. I would say just the opposite, your reaction is exactly the same as it might be had something happened to any other person we know. We reject the reality of and and we keep thinking, "if only this and this had happened differently, we would be where we are". I'm not saying you are reacting to this as if a real person had died; I have no intention of insulting your intelligence. However the reactions that people have, even when they decry the scene as badly written or poorly constructed, do seem a lot like the reactions of people who have sudden;y and tragically lost someone. Any scene in a movie that can provoke a strong emotional reactions from an audience, positive or negative, should be considered with a little more than a dismissive thought. Anyway, sorry for the wall o text. I've been re-watching the movie trying to figure out where and why I diverge with so many online critics of the movie; trying to figure out if I'M the asshole in all of this, so many of these thoughts are still fresh in my mind. Thanks for, "listening" and keep doing what you do!

That's what happens when you let Zack "Sucker Punch" Snyder run your DCU. You get horrible editing with scenes that needed to be left in cut out and scenes that aren't needed left in. For example, as you mentioned Alachia, the murders and funeral of his parents were not needed and the "Communion" scene where Lex is shown that either Darkseid or some other big bad villain is coming should have been left in. Inappropriate acting with Jesse Eisenberg acting like the Joker instead of Lex Luthor, iconic characters slaughtered in the first act of the movie because Zack "Sucker Punch" Snyder thought it would be "cool and fun" to have Jimmy Olsen work for the CIA and get shot by terrorist. Superman cares about no one but Lois and his mother. Affleck as Batman was really good. Gal Gadot was not given much to do but the lines she did have about half were spoken woodenly. Frustrating movie.
@SmoothAsUsual478 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly! They crammed the Flashpoint Paradox, Dark Knight Returns, and The Death of Superman all into one movie. Each one should have been their own movie! And they don't even blend them together but instead keep them as separate plot points. Then just spend most of the middle of the movie on Lois investigating a bullet... They did not earn the Death of Superman. It came out of nowhere and was immediately undone by that dirt lifting off the coffin. Now we won't care in future DCU movies if someone dies. I agree that all the elements are there to make a great movie. Unfortunately it's all thrown into a blender and came out as a complete mess. It was shocking how sudden the transitions were. I think Lois was going down an escalator and thinks she recognizes someone... then all of a sudden Batman is switching on the bat signal in his armored suit! That's a big moment and the reason why we're all there, but it has no build up and just came from a mundane Lois scene. It's like someone was switching the channels on the tv. I hated the fact that we had five different stories going on. Lex, Superman, Batman, Lois, and wheel chair guy. That had no interaction between them while they were going on! I was very put off by the fact that Superman didn't go save his own mom. He was pissed when they touched her in Man of Steel yet here he just lets Batman handle it. WHAT?! Also, he always calls her mom. Always. He has manners. Yet he calls her by her name when he's about to die?! Wouldn't the natural to say have been "He's going to kill my mom".And speaking of, he saves Lois whenever she's in danger. She's on the other side of the world in Africa and zips over there in a hot second to save her! He knows when she's being thrown off a building, he knows when she's trapped under water. Yet he doesn't know when someone's kidnapping his mom?? The Flash totally pops up out of nowhere in that portal. Everyone I went with didn't know who he was! They could have at least set that up. Like Lex could have talked to his assistant about meta humans and about how he's after a certain one because he may hold the secret to trans dimensional travel. Then it could pan down to that surveillance footage of The Flash. At least that would have been some kind of set up for that moment and context for people who aren't familiar. I keep hearing the excuse that those things are "For the fans". Not really. You should never assume any viwer knows anything. Certainly not the characters because this is the first time they're meeting! Not to mention the fact that you're setting up a new cinematic universe. In the Avengers, Banner didn't just turn into the Hulk and the audience is supposed to know who he is. They mention several times before that "turns into big green rage monster. Then you're set up and now are seeing the thing they keep referencing. Wonder Woman was NOT a character in this movie. Gal Gadot walked around in a dress, then got turned into a CGI character.That's it. I don't know how people are saying she was the best part. If they're talking about the fight with Doomsday then yes it was good CGI and choreography. There was no "character in that. I love the DCU and want good movies! The writing, editing, and direction was a mess.

How you could have done BvS differently; My suggestions You don't blow up the senate hearing, you let Superman speak and put his case to the world (generates a seed of doubt with Batman) You do still keep in the plot to get Batman and Superman to fight (but in this version Superman without Lex knowing has explained what's going on to Batman, and you don't initially show that to the audience, it will be revealed later). Once Martha is saved and Lex fooled, everything is revealed and Lex reveals his fall-back - Metallo. You then have a fight against a Kryptonite powered villain that Batman feels a responsibility for because he was an employee. They have to work together to defeat it without killing the guy. I haven't seen it yet but I'm soooo glad to hear my thoughts on Supes death in this movie be voiced by someone else, Queen. By killing Supes in this movie, they've fucking slaughtered the meaning of 'stakes', 'risk' or 'tension' not just for Superman but for every hero here on out in their cinematic universe. It was an entirely boneheaded and baffling choice that I'm surprised anyone came up with as a worthwhile idea let alone one they should spend their billions of dollars and months of time filming for. That choice alone is makes the movie deserve a damn F in my mind, eschewing the fact that they seem to have barely even made a character worth any emotional payoff in killing in the first place.

Alachia, your reviews are amazing. "How is the general moviegoer supposed to that?" They aren't. Such excellent observations. You are obviously up on all of your comic book universes; I am not. For the most part, I quit reading comic books in the early '80's, and I read mostly Marvel. I had *no* idea what the hell was going on here. Not until I saw this review did I know what was up with the apocalyptic visions (and many other things) - I was totally lost. Thanks again, you are brilliant.

If Snyder and Goyer had subtracted the elements of Miller's Dark Knight Returns and Death of Superman, and focused mostly on their personal philosophies it may have made for a more decent movie. I agree with you about how the movies should have been more "marvel'esque" in sequence. BvS to me suffered from the kitchen sink syndrome. The movie deserves every criticism is receives.

You basically hit the nail right on the head about this movie. But honestly, from hearing about the making and re-making of BvS, Zack Synder directing, and Facebook guy as Lex Luther. I didn't have high hopes for it, like I do with Suicide Squad and Civil War. I am little nervous about the X-Men movie but I will go and see it just like I did with BvS. @RobTTheN3RD7 жыл бұрын
I never thought about it that way. That Bruce Wayne was the Lex Luthor we should have had. Eisenberg's Luthor was a goofy, wannabe, joker-esque portrayal. His plan made no sense. I listened to another reviewer as well, and another thing I see is the total misrepresentation of Superman & Batman. Both killers. Both hypocrites. And, we didn't get the clash we should have had. This should never have been just a movie them fighting, this should have also been a movie about a "clash of ideologies". So, I watched it again. It is that bad. Snyder really screwed the pooch on this one. The fact that I liked Man of Steel, makes this worse. Because in this movie, he destroyed any meaning that movie may have had.

Great video. I agree a million percent. I love those characters and wanted to seem them done well on the big screen. Yet sadly it seems Snyder ruined the characters and made such a un-cohesive mess of a movie. It feels like they rushed the story and script and it all fell apart. Sad.

Everybody is talking about how superman powers is depicted in BvS, but that isnt the only issue. His apperant lack of wanting to catch bad guys is another. When telling Batman to stop being Batman, Superman ignores the fact that Bruce Wayne is hunting a pack of terrorists who just blew up half the harbor, Superman ignores "the bad guys" (who btw is carrying Kryptonite) to give Bats an oral spanking, so stupid. The main problem with BvS is not how Sups powers are visualized, its the story. Its bullshit. Though Bruce Wayne's inital response to the destruction of Metropolis is understandable, his apperant obsession with "killing" Clark after 18 months of Superman saves is hands down stupid. It pissed me off. The world's Greatest detective wants the kill the man who saved earth from total annihiliation literally by exterminating his own people, before even speaking to him?!!! The Hole fight between Batman and Superman is a joke, so contrived, unless Bruce Wayne is a total psychopath? Btw this iteration of (A)Lex couldnt manipulate a dog of Pavlov. There are tons of brainless plotholes all over the script that just makes the movie unbearable. You could argue that Superman atleast would have reacted in some way when the Bomb went off, he do have superspeed, rather than moping around like an adolescent.
@blacktee317 жыл бұрын
Auron1Roxas2 show some maturity and stop the name calling. his pont was superman kills without hesitation while he not only hesitated to save a ton of people from a bomb he should've heard ticking he does nothing but stand there as it goes off. he doesn't cry he doesnt mourn he doesn't even flinch. he's supposed to be a man of compassion. So what you mean to tell me Superman knows what Batman's motives are, knows where Batman is going to be, but has no clue Batman is trying to stop terrorists? And though he straight up murdered again because his girlfriend was too nosey not to try and interview a terrorist he's totally justified in lecturing Batman on his morals and who he should and shouldn't stop? Your concept of logic and maturity level suggest you're still in middle school. Calm down. If I have to accept Joel Schumachers Batman sucked, u can acknowledge this one did as well.

A LOT of product placement, I can't remember a time where I saw more on screen. I'm not a comic book guy, never read any growing up, way too old now. All I know about these characters is what I've seen on screen or, in the case of Wonder Woman & Doomsday, did a quick wiki search to learn some more. A lot of this stuff in the movie went right over my head, and it served as a big negative for me. The biggest thing I'm hearing constantly from people who liked or loved the movie is how BIG of a pass they give its' failures. They often acknowledge the faults, problems, etc but they just ignore it. Hey, guys, that's fanboying 101. I get that Snyder tried to make this movie for the fans specifically in mind, but, it's a bad movie - probably because of this reason. For instance, the #1 review on IMDB says that you should go in with no expectations. What kind of advice is that!?
@mar10ssj18 жыл бұрын
The whole thing felt very rushed. They did not take the time to flesh anything or anyone out. By the end, the whole movie felt very hollow. I believe the reason for that is so that later on everything gets fleshed out and everything makes sense but this movie felt like the set up to Justice League. This movie could have been a mini series and then go to Justice League. That would have been insanely good. The only problem with that is the death of Superman. WAY TOO SOON. The DCU does not deserve a death of superman story SO DAMN EARLY. There is no gravatas, no weight, no stakes, and serves no purpose to kill superman so early in the DCU. Of course no one believes he is truly dead, now anytime someone dies no one will take it seriously. That ending was A HUGE MISTAKE.

There are some glorious lines that mingle darkness and despair with light and hope in Tolkien's writing. "‘I have still this to say,’ answered Aragorn. ‘No enemy has yet taken the Hornburg. Depart, or not one of you will be spared. Not one will be left alive to take back tidings to the North. You do not know your peril.’ So great a power and royalty was revealed in Aragorn, as he stood there alone above the ruined gates before the host of his enemies, that many of the wild men paused, and looked back over their shoulders to the valley, and some looked up doubtfully at the sky. But the Orcs laughed with loud voices; and a hail of darts and arrows whistled over the wall, as Aragorn leaped down. There was a roar and a blast of fire. The archway of the gate above which he had stood a moment before crumbled and crashed in smoke and dust. The barricade was scattered as if by a thunderbolt. Aragorn ran to the king’s tower. But even as the gate fell, and the Orcs about it yelled, preparing to charge, a murmur arose behind them, like a wind in the distance, and it grew to a clamour of many voices crying strange news in the dawn. The Orcs upon the Rock, hearing the rumour of dismay, wavered and looked back. And then, sudden and terrible, from the tower above, the sound of the great horn of Helm rang out. All that heard that sound trembled. Many of the Orcs cast themselves on their faces and covered their ears with their claws. Back from the Deep the echoes came, blast upon blast, as if on every cliff and hill a mighty herald stood. But on the walls men looked up, listening with wonder; for the echoes did not die. Ever the hornblasts wound on among the hills; nearer now and louder they answered one to another, blowing fierce and free. ‘Helm! Helm!’ the Riders shouted. ‘Helm is arisen and comes back to war. Helm for Théoden King!’ And with that shout the king came. His horse was white as snow, golden was his shield, and his spear was long. At his right hand was Aragorn, Elendil’s heir, behind him rode the lords of the House of Eorl the Young. Light sprang in the sky. Night departed." www.freebookol.net/The_Lord_of_the_Rings_Illustrated/133.html

They actually killed Superman twice. He was dead after the nuke, his body was desiccated in space. Something way harder to heal from then a hole in the chest. I would love to see Alachia and Max Landis in a meeting with Zack Snyder and David Goyer about Man of Steel, BvS and who the Clark Kent/Superman character really is and what the character means to them and so many other people. I'd actually would spend pay per view in HD money to see that. Superman's S shield is the third most recognizable symbol on the planet behind Mickey Mouse head silhouette and the Cross. Now that's real power that the studio can tap into yet the WB and the creative team of these movies continue to shit on the character and have Cavill play him as a soulless shell of an idiot which makes him not a very likable character at all.

Not only is the flash thing confusing but it was set up as if it were a dream sequence. After flash shows up and leaves, Bruce suddenly wakes up, therefore telling the audience that this was a dream. And yes Lex Luther isn't usually so reckless. I thought Jesse did a good job with what he was given. I think the upbeat stuff was set up to make him more likable and for me I liked him much more than Superman. Superman was a total dick. I could at least understand that Batman was going through some kind of psychosis but Superman? Total hypocrite. I love that the way he tries to be civil with batman by telling him he could just kill him if he wanted and then pushing him. He had time to restrain batman and get his point across but apparently his mom wasn't important enough to push his ego aside. Another thing that bothered me is how Bruce was so manipulated by newspaper clippings and red marker writings. I would think that batman would inquire about the source of these messages. I just wondered who would succumb to this weak ass manipulation. Also the wonder woman pic? that pic and the footage he has of her doesn't prove that that is the same woman. At least it's conclusive during the footage that the others are metahumans. Wonder Woman's file looked like something from buzz feed about historical dopplegangers. Like oh cool there's this chick who looks like a chick in an older photo. So where is his proof that she is the woman in the photo and that she's metahuman? There's so much bs it's not even funny. sorry for my rant but I'm just glad i found this channel with someone who is a fan of these characters but was incredibly disappointed with this film and even man of steel. I hated that train wreck as well

There are tons of plot holes to pick apart, but I haven't seen this one discussed in the existing comments: Lois Lane throws the kryptonite spear into a pool of water. I can buy this. At that point she would have only seen it as a danger to her beloved Superman so hiding it makes sense (although she should definitely plan on retrieving it later and hiding it somewhere better). So then she walks outside and sees a bunch of explosions happening in the distance . . . and decides she better go back and get the spear?!?!? She didn't a call from anyone. Nobody was communicating with her. So how could she possibly know that there's this dangerous creature that we need the spear to kill? She couldn't! Which just dovetails with the stupidity of Batman not just leaving the dangerous monster on the deserted island (which Doomsday has already blasted so nothing left to lose). He could have flown in and found Lois, explained the situation to her, gotten the spear from the water no problem (because no Doomsday blasting the walls into the well), and then flown to wherever Doomsday was lickey split. But you know, action scenes are cooler in ruins so screw characters making sensible decisions based on the information they have.
@navy02878 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Whalin You do realize Lois Lane has super powers right? She has the uncanny ability to conveniently do, understand, or be wherever or whatever the story needs. This is how she was magically able to see exactly where Superman and Zod landed after falling from space during the Metropolis battle and travel several miles through fallen buildings and debris in a matter of seconds to comfort Superman immediately after he breaks Zod's neck.
@Ninja_d_Rabbit8 жыл бұрын
I did like the movie but I also agree with everything you said. I pointed out some of things you said in my review of the movie. A lot of things in this movie made no sense for example the scene with Jonathan Kent talking to Clark wasn't necessary. It was supposed to be a peep talk to inspire him to still be Superman but it was depressing. All I got from it was no matter what you do things are still going to suck, good luck Clark. I didn't understand Bruce's vision/dream of the future. When the Parademons showed up in Bruce's dream all I was thinking how would he know what they are if Darkseid hasn't been introduced yet. When Flash showed up at the end of the vision/dream I didn't know if that was part of the dream or if it really happened. I agree that Jesse Eisenberg was not a great choice for Lex Luthor but he wasn't Lex, he was his son. His performances didn't bother me because it wasn't based on anyone. He was Lex in name only. If I had the power to choose an actor to play Lex Luthur I would have choose Jon Hamm. I think he could play Lex Luthor. Good review and if you look on the bright side it's better than Man of Steel, things are getting better. If you want another hug to get through this dark time here it is. It's going to be OK.

Hi Alachia.. So, now that most have seen the UE extended cut we know a (quite) few things more.. like that the bomb at the hearing was leadlined (though, we did know that Martha was gagged from the photos).. I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed Gal's performance.. I too was skeptical and, in truth didn't discover who she was until even after i saw her Amazonoided.. the attire was just so lo-profile yet still so cool, that I was still stumped .. and that unique music score bulding her up, WOW, that clinched it for me.. and she proved us all right in her '17 movie, she was just great.. Along with Ben the movie was watchable. The BvS fight scene was overshadowed by when after Batman bust up through the floor for the warehouse obliteration sequence.. now THAT's Batman!............. (not that phoney end fight with Bane in the square, breaking stone off the Public institution in '12's "TDKRises")...... Ben did a most commendable job, so he has my vote too as the best Bat yet Good video, even if a bit raw.. Hey why don't you do an Ultimate Edition director's follow up? Thanks for your work.

+Styleshift88 Snyder AND Goyer accomplished that with Man of Steel. They don't understand the character and don't care enough to even try. Goyer came up with the brilliant idea of Superman killing Zod because he felt that the movie needed a surprise ending. Not that killing Zod would make any sense story wise as to why Supes would do it but he's a lazy terrible writer so let's just do it because we need a surprise ending with punch. Nolan who was a producer on the movie said no. Superman fans would lose their shit because that's not the character. Goyer and Snyder disagreed and since Nolan isn't writing or directing the movie, his suggestion means nothing so they went with Supes killing Zod. I wanted Snyder and Goyer gone after I saw that train wreck of a movie MoS but apparently those two must have some very incriminating info on Kevin Tsujihara the CEO of WB for him to bring them back and to keep fucking up the DCEU.

Carbon Based Lifeform After I've seen quite a few interviews with him since Man of Steel and BvS, I've come to the conclusion that he's too coked up to care. Snyder always wanted to make a Batman movie and he got his wish with BvS. It's no coincidence that his favorite character, Batman, came off looking the best in this movie and since that's all that anybody is talking about because Affleck's performance was the best thing about this film, WB announces a Batman solo film which was the worst kept secret in Hollywood. I am pretty excited about and looking forward to Ayer's SS, Patty Jenkin's WW and James Wan's Aquaman. I am not, however, excited in the least bit about Zack Snyder directing not 1 but 2 more damn films back to back with JL. I really don't get why WB is sticking with him after his last 2 films have been so divisive amongst fans and critics.

Loved both this and the spoiler free review. I think I know the opening of that movie that OTHER you was watching in a parallel universe... Lex Luthor (Played by Bryan Cranston) Looks out from atop LexCorp Tower overlooking the massive reconstruction taking place in Metropolis. "I think we can both be proud of the work our people have accomplished Bruce. Metropolis is coming back faster than anyone would have thought possible." His vision falls upon the giant statue of Superman. "But how do we know this won't happen again? Those aliens laid this city in ruins. That much power unchecked. What's to stop this from happening again? Maybe next time it will be Tokyo, or Washington, ... or Gotham and how would we protect ourselves Bruce? We have to make sure this never happens again." Camera pulls back to reveal Bruce Wayne observing the same view. Here we have Lex being Lex. He isn't manipulating Bruce Wayne but still it resonates with Bruce's worries that someone as powerful as Superman might need to be stopped. Be contained. How do you contain that kind of power. Lex is thinking the same thoughts independently but with killed or destroyed replacing stopped and contained. Lex is working on a plan which has NOTHING to do with Batman and Bruce Wayne has no idea what Lex is doing but he is doing his own research to see if Superman has a weakness that he could use to stop the Kryptonian. (Useful when Lex's project Doomsday gets loose (an event not planned by Lex because Lex KNOWS this thing is unstable and is not prepared to go to THAT extreme just yet.)

A quibble. If they were going to make dossiers on some superhero collection, I don't see why it wouldn't be mpegs and digital files. My big question was 'WHY?" Why is he collecting the files in the first place? Why were they hiding? How did he know where to look? Was he going to kill them too? Lack of context, most of your comments, agree totally. The biggest inconsistency for me is that Superman knew where Lois was IN A FRIGGING DESERT, and ONE A SKYSCRAPER, but he could not also know where his MOM was? How does that work? Forced conflict. Not enough action. Too dour and bleak. No color or joy. Bad characterizations of Superman and Lex Luthor (WW and BM worked for me) Horrible Lois Lane and Perry White. The biggest 'out of left field, oops, I had to delete this out of the story' was that last minute comment by Lex about the dinner bell. What exactly in the movie had ANY mention to some external threat? David Goyer ought to break his pen in despair if he had any shame. (He doesn't) Zack Snyder should take a vow of never making another Superman film again.

I was so honestly saddened by the "new" Superman in Man of Steel as well as the New 52 that I have problems even being able to read/watch anything to do with them. I probably won't see BvS until it is out on Blu-Ray for rental; and being a lifelong Superman fan that is depressing for me. I miss when Batman was just a man (basically the DC version of Sherlock Holmes) and no the master of everything he is today. I miss when the entire point of Superman was not how much he can lift or his morality ... but how he made US as people feel; how he made us hope and inspire to be. People these days, they are more comfortable accepting violence and horror than truth and compassion. That alone is heart-breaking. There's a great anecdote that writer Grant Morrison, the man responsible for one of the best Superman stories in recent memory, "All-Star Superman"; says about Superman in his memoir "Supergods." He explains the inspiration for his story; that he was at a convention and he saw a handsome man in a Superman costume just sitting down and relaxing on a stoop. That was Morrison's epiphany; The most powerful man alive wouldn't be tortured but instead would be the friendliest, most relaxed person you ever saw. This is evident in the cover to "All-Star Superman" No. 1 by artist Frank Quitely. To make a solid Superman tale, you have to embrace a few unpopular notions about what makes great superhero stories: Having something "Dark" doesn't always mean better or more complex; fighting for good because it's the right thing to do is a compelling enough reason. Heroes' powers aren't their most important aspect of it either, but shouldn't be shied away from as well. Until Batman and Superman go back to those ideals, I am probably done with DC entirely; despite also loving the Flash and Wonder Woman.

The John Kent scene (which I will defend, because it's pretty nuanced), is basically a sort of dream in which Clark is hearing a tale of how John tried to help his family's farm, but that help caused disaster somewhere else on another farm that caused destruction. The story was saying that even though you can try and help, bad things can happen out of help. It's almost a "no good dead goes unpunished" kind of Aesop. To quote from tv tropes "Likewise, the advice from Jonathan Kent about how bad things can happen to others even when you try to do good is an important lesson for Superman to learn, since he's still grieving about the people he wasn't able to save in spite of his best efforts." So yeah, that.

Totally agree, they dont respect who superman, batman, lex, superman's parents, or any other characters are. Aside from having no story whatsoever, they should have kept the escence of who they are, what they stand for and what they represent.

great review. You said everything. The problem is that production insisted on introducing the justice league at all cost, even in a awkward way. Maybe a last minute decision which totally screwed a preexisting story which made more sense, focusing on Batman and Superman only. I guess will never know unless someone spill the beans one day

Really liked this. I just did a DECONSTRUCTING COMICS on this that is live in a couple of weeks, curious how it compares. And when you mentioned that you liked Wonder Woman when she appears, which many also say even if they hate this thing(and I do hate this thing, on a very deep and steaming level), I think I found a place I am harsher on this thing than you, though I'm kicking myself I didn't think to mention it in the 120 min the recording took up. So here it is instead: Why DO we speak so glowingly of Wonder Woman in BATMAN V SUPERMAN? As presented, she's a complete nonentity and just a (very cool) visual; she says little of any importance; Batman pretends not to know her; are we just trying to encourage--which is fine--a Wonder Woman film, which we already know is coming? We find out she looks cool, she has an accent, and like many in this film she's good at double-clicking on a folder and watching status bars. I'm just saying, there is literally only one difference she makes, and that's as an occasion for us to meet them Justice Leaguers. She has a couple of cool-looking moments against Doomsday that make no impact. Which is odd. Because her powers are magical. And Kryptonians are vulnerable to magic. And this would have been a good way to introduce the idea. And show she is something unique as powerful as Superman himself. But who might teach him about HELPING OTHERS who aren't Lois, who should really not go on roofs. That might have been one thing you could do with her in the same stretch of story time. It's not like you have to pay them per line. She is used as a vehicle from the moment she's introduced, not much more respectful than making her the JSA's secretary in her very first crossover appearance. Her appearance in the film is very much of a piece with how everything else is in the film: a collection of trailers. This is not speaking against the character herself. Just the sadly empty way she's used. I would say she's wasted but in fact she had exactly the effect they intended for her in this film. I will definitely be subscribing. I like what you did here.

Goddamn it, Alachia, you nailed it when you said "there was no hope". That's what superheroes are supposed to represent. Hope. This movie was HOPELESS. And not just in its design. I felt nothing but HOPELESS. Even at the end, I felt like, 'even though superheroes exist, they can't save us anyway. So f**k it.'

The Martha scene was some great subtext. Surprising, as it was subtext, in a film with no other piece of subtext, and it was done well. It threw Batman because learning Superman had a mum with the same name as his humanised Superman. Batman began to realise he isn't the merciless alien monster believed to be. It is strange Clark just said Save Martha and not Save my mum. Who calls their mum by their first name? If he had been doing it in the rest of the film, fair enough. I loved Wonder Woman. I loved all the Batman stuff. Everything related to the Superman mythos was abismally mishandled. The big bad at the end to unite the heroes should have been someone like Lobo. Save Doomsday for the first Justice League, where the entire team is there and Superman sacrifices himself heroically to save the city, and his team who are getting kurbstomped by Doomsday. That gives the emotional element to the fight. Honestly, DC will never be able to achieve the status of Marvel's MCU as long as they keep Snyder directing. And that's a shame, because I want to learn more about DC characters.

I went in to this movie with rock bottom expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the fact that it did not totally make me want to bang my head against the wall. I totally agree with your point about Lex Luthor, and other points. Nonetheless, I was not that upset by the movie (even though it wasn't good) because it exceed my very, very, very low expectations.

Thank you. You mirror a lot of my feelings on this mess of a DC Cinematic Universe from the minds of madman Snyder, Terrio, Goyer & that creative team. BvS would make all the money but they are crazy if they think we are looking forward to Justice League movies as is. Characters all act like idiots unlike themselves. It could not have been easier to make a true DC universe and he dropped the ball so badly. How can you make an overly optimistic character like Superman bum me out? Batman using guns and killing regular thugs? Any solo Batman and Superman movies moving forward are so f****d! The DCEU needs a Rebirth from Snyder.

I think the Martha part were one of the few moment of motivation that worked for Batman. OK the motivation for hating each other were nonsense. But I believe that Bruce didn't think of superman as something to sympathise with. For Bruce Superman had no connections to humanity and therefore no good reason for wanting to protect humans. When Bruce realised that both their mothers had the same names that gave Bruce a connection between superman and humanity. Added to the fact that Bruce suffers from PTSD and the thought that superman would know his mothers name knocked him off guard. That's my interpretation. Anyways great vid! :)

So many scenes in this movie were directly cribbed from Marvel movies, too! Superman asked to attend Senate hearing = Iron Man attends Senate hearing Batman in armor fighting angry Superman = Iron Man in his Hulkbuster armor fighting Hulk Batman has horrific dreams of the future = Iron Man has horrific dreams of the future Batman debating Alfred on his methods = Iron Man debating Captain America on his methods Alfred's pithy English commentary prior to Batman fights = Jarvis' pithy English commentary prior to Iron Man fights And so on. They do this a lot in this movie, this echoing of key scenes in the MCU movies. I don't know if it's intentional, but it's there.
@jskrabac8 жыл бұрын
+Nix Nightbird Cap can't save Bucky from falling to his death = Superman gets to Africa too late and Jimmy Olsen gets shot Cap's shield blocks thor's hammer and generates a radius of destruction = WW's bracelets similarly deflect Doomsday's heat ray blast In Winter Soldier Cap gets nostalgic looking at old photos of Peggy and soldiers he fought with = WW finds photo with Steve Trevor Iron Man sends an email to Black Widow with some youtube videos of Captain America reels from WW II, Thor flying, and security camera footage of the Hulk smashing a convenience store...oh wait, Marvel earned all their cameos.

THe lack of hope really works. Hope works for the spiderman movies where it feels really hokey. Batman saving the sex slaves feels real. He just stopped crime. but there is no over all sense of completion. Bruce Wayne mentions this. Then feels that destroying superman could be his legacy because he is an end to a means of all powerful gods on earth.

Here's where it started to go south for me: Superman is blamed for the mass shooting in Nairobi. He's freakin' Superman. He's never been known to use a gun and he can kill with his heat vision (let alone use his strength for total massive destruction). Why would anyone think he would bother to even carry a gun? I'm on that hearing panel he was going to testify before, my first red flag is, "Why is Superman supposedly shooting people? That makes no sense." But then very little in the movie made sense.

Seen it twice with a group of comic book junkies and casual fans. Both groups (like me) are not superhero movie critics so our expectations were quite different from "uber hardcore" fans. We like both DC & Marvel, and enjoy the difference between the two universes. If BvS tried to be a "Marvel" clone we'd probably not like this movie as much. What did my group like? 1. The tone and atmosphere...more serious and dark. 2. Batman & Superman realized at the end they were both "human" and not the monsters others said they were. 3. Ben Affleck NAILED the Batman role (best one ever). Good supporting Alfred. 4. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor was great. His interpretation of that character was totally sick. 5. Liked the musical score and dream sequences. 6. Good set up for JL 7. Best quote: "You can't unring the bell...HE'S COMING!!! DING DING DING!!!" Group average rating: 8.5 out of 10

Your breakdown of DoJ made me re-evaluate my fairly forgiving assessment of the film. Granted, I'm not a huge DC fan; haven't followed the comics for many years, New 52 went right past me, Dark Knight Returns remains one of my favorites along with Batman Year One, Death of Superman was the beginning of the end of my interest in DC comics, etc. etc. Watched several of the very competent DC animated originals, really enjoyed Nolan's DK trilogy and was ready to see DC get a proper MCU treatment. So DoJ should review well with someone who has familiarity with the IPs and the classic stories, but isn't so invested with the DCU that any deviations from the current mythos results in entitled fan rage. Yes, it was disjointed like a serialized show cut together into a 2 hr and whatever runtime film that managed to simultaneously be a bit long for theater viewing while being over edited for length in the interest of shorter play time/more showings per day. Admittedly I watched it a second time after digesting and reading spoiler reviews for the bits and pieces I missed and/or had no idea was the significance of their inclusion into the film. And in retrospect, making a film that consists of nothing but set up for a franchise filled with Easter Eggs that lay the foundation for all future plot lines and spin offs is a now classic example of how not to launch a franchise. I can't address all the nitpicks or grievances, many of which aren't nitpicks so much as oversights if generous, failings at worst, but DoJ did suffer from putting the cart before the horse. No set up outside of the context in which we are in a post Superman/superior alien intelligence exists version of Earth. DoJ was the set up when it probably should have been the Phase I payoff after establishing all the Justice League players. As for "Martha" I didn't interpret that bit of connection with "our moms have the same name so that makes us BFFs 4 eva" so much as it made Bruce realize that Clark wasn't a hostile alien force acting unilaterally that could become the very nightmare he dreamed of and had witnessed firsthand from the events of Man of Steel, but that Clark has a mother, more importantly, an Earth mother who is apparently the first thing on his mind when he's staring death in the face. He's more human that we think. Bruce has to assume Martha isn't a popular alien name, but that's not a stretch.
@zaphero55188 жыл бұрын
The problem with the Martha moment is: 1. it makes a fight unnecessary, 2. it is a random coincidence, 3. Batman doesn't value human life as it is, so it doesn't make sense that Superman being humanized by this would stop him.
