29:28 Ok. Brad and Brian? I'm about to tell you a story that is 100% true. I have a friend who during 2001 worked in telemarketing. Basically she took calls for people ordering furniture. On 9/11 she received a phone call and when she answered it the lady on the other end was all "Omg! Omg!! A plane just hit the world Trade Center!! I can see the smoke from my office! It's fucking Insane!!" And my friend... not really knowing what to say or if the person was just crazy was like "Oh! ....erm... That's terrible... ..can... can I help you?" and the lady was like "Oh! Yes, right. I wanted to order this sofa from your catalogue...." ....THIS IS A THING THAT HAPPENED.

I mean, fuck, we had a good Batman vs. Superman movie in the past with the DCAU, World's Finest. And they managed to do the same kind of damage to a city that Man of Steel did, but it was clever, with Joker stealing Lex Luthor's military aircraft and blowing the shit out of Metropolis.

I had the same problem watching the movie, it was a VERY crowded theater but extremely quiet aside from two people, a dude bursting into laughter when Perry White says "NEWS FLASH! GOTHAM CRIME WAVE! In other news...water is wet" and one girl who started applauding when Wonder Woman showed up to fight Doomsday but she got embarrassed and stopped. Every time they reiterated how the city was deserted, it reminded me of that DBZ edit, "TOO BAD IT'S SUNDAY, THOSE BUILDINGS WOULD'VE BEEN FULL TOMORROW"

I get you guys yourselves think the Wayne Manor thing is pointless but, imo, it reflects how little thought Snyder put into the characters. He's like 90's comic artists who couldn't write worth a damn and should have stuck to just making pretty pictures while someone who understood narrative told them where to put them. All Snyder can do is make cool slow motion shots so when it comes time to something simple like "What is the state of Wayne Manor" he can't give a coherent answer bc it was never something he even considered. The only important aspects of the film to him were the ones where he could do trippy stuff with the camera.

It's always funny hearing Americans be flustered by silent audiences in theatres, when here in Germany it would be considered very rude to suddenly get up and cheer or applaud in the middle of a movie. Aside from laughing at jokes in movies, we're quiet in movie theatres so as to not disturb the other people trying to pay attention to the movie. ^^

Marvel Cinematic just pulls their narratives off better. Even the dark knight trilogy is confusing, and choppy and inconsistent in tons of places. Now, don't get me wrong, I think the dark knight trilogy is fine for the most part, but I haven't ever seen a DC movie handle consistency as well as any marvel film. I don't really know what causes it, but I really hope DC gets things together, and I think the Batfleck solo film will be a great start.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice should be renamed to... Dawn of Justice: Origins - Wonder Woman, Man of Steel 2, Flashpoint, Darkseid Rises, Aquaman Begins, The Death and Return of Superman, Cyborg and the Mother Box, The Dark Knight Returns, Suicide Squad prequel, and at the very very bottom... Batman v Superman, but... I mean it's more of a subplot Yeah, that's more accurate

I do have to agree with Brad: I'm honestly fine with a DC CU that's dark in line of the Nolan Trilogy or Batman 89 but it has to be entertaining and have good characterization. That's why those movies worked and this and MoS don't (of course, good writing helps too), they had characters you could identify with and some moments of levity to balance out the really dark moments (whether it's Joker dancing to Prince whilst vandalizing a museum or Batman chastising a Bat-wannabe vigilante for wearing hockey pads).

+Harris Boekenheide Exactly. People don't really respond to suspicious stuff when they're bored. I went to high school across the street from where I lived. One day in the middle of class, there was suddenly what sounded like automatic gunfire in the street below. We all stopped and perked our ears up, and I'm sure somebody asked out loud "Is that gunfire?" But we just went "Nah, it's probably nothing" and continued on with the class. When I was walking home after school, there was police tape and squad cars all over. Turned out a ranking member of the local criminal organization had just gotten gunned down. Huh.

What a mess. If a movie is two and a half hours long it had better have a tight script that keeps moving so it feels justified. Lord of the Rings is a good example of that being done right. It's epic so the length was needed to tell the story. From what I gather BvS needed someone to go at script with a pair of garden sheers.

So, I heard a good argument from a friend that the reason Martha is so significant, is because Batman is suffering from PTSD. Because of his parents, Jason, and all the people who died at Wayne Building in Metropolis, the guilt has driven him over the edge. Hence the brutality he has in the film, and the reason the whole Martha thing works is because it brings back to reality, it makes Superman more human in his eyes. Granted, you would NEVER fucking know that because there is zero fucking buildup or focus, so the whole Martha thing comes off as seriously stupid.
@paperbackwriter1111
@paperbackwriter1111 6 жыл бұрын
The Martha thing is well-intentioned and not even a bad idea (even though the name isn't necessary), but the execution is ridiculous. Sweaty burly men yelling "Marthaaaaaaaaa" with a pretentiously bombastic score in the background.

The Pickles Yeah alot of movie these days suffer from looking like a long and tedious trailer... Like The Amazing Spider-Man Movies, Or any Christopher Nolan movies are Huge Trailers... Music in the background and skipping from Scene to Scene while someone talking at the same time... Thats what trailers does, Show me a Movie for god Sake! I blame it all on Christopher Nolan... lol
@thepickles8833
@thepickles8833 8 жыл бұрын
gabriel montreuil You're not too far off either. I like some of Nolan's work, but I think you've hit the nail on the head describing what his movies basically are. Look at Inception, the "Chain Kick" or "Multi-Kick" sequence is very trailer anatomy, but at least it had a plot reason doing that. i've seen Trailers that were better than the movies they showed simply because "the anticipation" and "whole potential" sparks so much wonder and imagination just by seeing the trailer only to have it ruined by the final product. I still believe Trailers are very important, but now trailers show too much. They need to show less and remain Teasers until the movie or whatever comes out.
@gabrielmontreuil
@gabrielmontreuil 8 жыл бұрын
The Pickles Very True. :) What happens of Movie Simply being a Movie? Sometimes Studio and Productions are trying to make movies somethings they aren't! Trying to mix to many ideas at once or turning movies into "Trailer" like scenes... Hollywood need to take a break and let new Ideas and Talent being exploit instead of Recycling and Scrambling the same ideas... Movies are getting redundant... No wonder why people prefer to watch TV Series nowadays... Not all TV Series are Master Piece but there is so much Varieties in TV series compare to movies these days... These days i prefer rediscovering old Classic like Blade Runner, Matrix, Citizen Kane, Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, Clock Work Orange, Terminator 2... etc Than going to the theaters nowadays days...
@thepickles8833
@thepickles8833 8 жыл бұрын
gabriel montreuil Kevin Murphy (the voice of Tom Servo on Mystery Science Theater 3000) wrote an entire book about "why going to the movies has lost it's appeal. He made it a mission before writing the book to basically Go See a Different Movie Every Day for an Entire Year and this included seeing movies in different theaters around the world. And he's Tom Servo, he's seen the worst and this is nothing he can't handle, so he wrote the book with a sense of humor and also an insightful look at what has ultimately happened to the industry. I too have gotten tired of risking my time in theaters simply cuz none of the movies feel special or made with care. Only a few shinning examples like Mad Max Fury Road and Krampus show a glimmer of hope that there are movies made by movie lovers. But my point is that I also understand that the movie industry IS an industry full of hard working people and sometimes they just have to make these shitty remake movies just so they can keep working and earn a living. All those movie crew workers depend a little on this blockbusters to feed themselves regardless if they are making art or just stupid rehashed shit. A lot of people forget that part of the equation and just attack Hollywood's directors and producers without thinking about the little guys who also worked on the movie. Honestly, movies might be in need to evolve and change their business soon too with the coming advances in virtual reality like the Oculus Rift, and everything simply funneling into your home and your portable phone.

I'm pretty sure that it is very poorly implied that Alfred was creating the suit for Batman, even though Alfred seems very against the fighting idea and probably wouldn't help him build it anyway? I mean the only reason I can assume this is because at one point he's talking about the voice not being the problem "it's the damn helmet" or something like that, so he has to be referring to the big ass suit. Right? I don't know. I have a headache.

I thought man of Steel was okay. I didn't love nor hate it, and I'm in no way passionate about it. I can totally see why some people would love it but at the same time I see the problems others talk about. This, however, I came out of actively disliking. I had about the same reaction to this as you did Man of Steel, in that I was sitting there stunned at what I was watching. It was so joyless, so convoluted, and just all over the place in terms of narritive, and full of so many baffling and questionable decisions that _could_ work, but DC have yet to earn them and they just ended up blowing their load too early. There was some things I liked. I thought Affleck was a good Batman, just in a crap movie, and I'm looking forward to seeing him in a good one. I liked Gadot as Wonder Woman in the few scenes she was in and Irons as Alfred, but your absolutely right in that the movie is a complete mess.

+Darrius Cooper I'm getting really sick of this "argument". Yes, it happened with a lot for The Phantom Menace, but that doesn't mean audiences are generally going to have the same reaction with tons of films afterwards. A ton of people were arguing this because others dared to like The Force Awakens as well. Plot twist: some people genuinely enjoy a film for what it is and will continue to do so. Making a cheap prediction that "oh, their opinion will change later!" is a really cheap tactic to disown another person's opinion. Just state what your opinion is and don't try to shortchange others' opinions by acting like you can see into the future. Honestly, on a related note, I actually enjoy Man of Steel slightly more than I did a few years ago. It also helps that I always found the "Superman accidentally caused so much damage and death!" argument really shaky, and on multiple viewings over time I noticed that the VAST majority of said damage/deaths that weren't caused by Zod, Faora, and co. were actually caused by the American military.

I can't be certain, but I think Wayne Manor is in ruins as a half-arsed reference to the Kingdom Come comic series. In that series the house was ruined because it had finally been revealed Bruce Wayne was Batman, and some villains rampaged through the house and Bruce never bothered to rebuild it. He also has the mech-suit, but because he's somewhere around eighty years old it's actually an expensive walker. But I think his secret identity in the movie is still intact so it makes no sense.

The movie was okay, certainly not as bad as the critics say. The biggest issue with BvS is that it has so much set up for the Justice League movie that everything else in the film gets kind of sidelined. Much like Age of Ultron there are so many characters and things going on that the film can't find a balance to properly showcase everything. Maybe the extended cut will fix that when it comes out on BluRay, we'll see. The many dream sequences were also unnecessary and most of them could of been cut. That being said, the characters were all well acted, the action was excellent, and the final battle with the Trinity against Doomsday was spectacular. But the structure of the film is what lets it down. It doesn't break the film but it doesn't help it either. The film did get me excited for the upcoming Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman films though. Gal Gadot was amazing as Wonder Woman and I can't wait to see her dive more into this character. Ben Affleck playing Batman/Bruce Wayne was very well done; however, I am not a fan of the angry Frank Miller version of Batman who has the propensity to kill his enemies. And Superman's heroic qualities were much better realized in this film. All in all, if you went into this movie wanting to hate it it won't change your mind. I went in with an open mind not having read any reviews and criticisms. The audience seemed to enjoy the film and I did like it in the end. It made me interested in what the other DC movies will bring to the table and peaked my interest in the Justice League movie which, I guess, is the point.

But that is the biggest problem though: This is setting up the Justice League film and yet we have three very jarring issues. 1) How do you do this if you has Superman taking a dirt nap? Yeah, most likely that Superman will just pop out of nowhere like he does when he is "killed," but do you honestly expect that it will be handled well enough? "Hey guys! I finished absorbing the Sun's Rays to cure my case of death, so I'm ready to fight for truth and justice again!" 2) Why should Batman be in the Justice League? As far as I see, this would be like having The Punisher be in the Avengers; you are seriously going to add a guy who openly kills people and say "Well, as long as you promise to stop killing, you can join our group!" You can argue that we haven't seen any redeeming qualities out of this version of Batman that openly says that he should be allowed, and yet we are going to get a fun bullshit excuse to justify everything. Or hey, maybe Bruce Wayne will make a big donation and say, "Let Batman join." 3) You said it yourself: "Much like Age of Ultron there are so many characters and things going on that the film can't find a balance to properly showcase everything." Here's my argument for that: For each crossover film that Marvel has, how much build up movies were made before hand? Quite a bit, right? Well guess how many films between BvS and the Justice League movie that we're going to get if the current "Plan" stays its course? ... one. And guess who it is? Wonder Woman. Not to say that Woman Woman is a bad thing since this probably will be the first big thing done with Wonder Woman that I can recall in recent time, but you just introduced her BvS and now you are going to tell us her backstory instead of before the crossover film? Yeah, there is Suicide Squad too, but do you really think that is going to tie in anything with the actual story arc? It might, but let's be honest though, our attention isn't supposed to be on Suicide Squad right? It isn't like anyone in the Suicide Squad is going to join the Justice League at the end (and if they do, then let the backlash continue!). The point is that if you think Age of Ultron had problems with introducing new characters into the plot, I can't imagine the train wreck Justice League will have. There are o many problems with how DC is approaching the "Movie Universe," that it really is a shame that they didn't plan this out. Say what you will of Marvel/Disney, but they took the time to figure out how they were going to do, and look at where things are for them. DC needs to rethink their plans because they are screwing up left and right if an "OK Film" is the best they can do; especially if this was supposed to be the big crossover between two of their biggest heroes.

mas8705 I'm just stating my opinion on the movie. You are welcome to disagree if you want to but I just stated what I thought of the film. I am not here to invalidate someone's opinions or justify them. Nor I am I here to speculate on how WB/DC further develops their movie universe. Is BvS a flawed film? Yes, but I can still enjoy a flawed film. If you didn't enjoy the film then I can't help you with that. The reason why I used the example of 'Age of Ultron' (and 'Iron Man 2' suffers from this problem too) is that it did the same kinds of mistakes that BvS did. Too many characters, confusing subplots, strange motivations for the main villain, and choppy editing. 'Age of Ultron is the eleventh film in the MCU yet it made all of those beginners mistakes. The DCCU is just beginning so there is an expectation that it would stumble a little given the fact that they are playing catch up, so I can forgive some its shortfalls. I have higher expectations of Marvel because they are so far ahead. I am less forgiving of sloppy work from Marvel and just because they are way ahead of their competition doesn't mean I give them a free pass. For example, Ant-Man was good but it felt like an average effort especially when compared to films like Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. Even Brad Jones in his review of 'Ant-Man' pointed out that it felt like an average Marvel movie. Sorry but average and half-hearted efforts on Marvel's part don't impress me anymore. Like Pixar, Marvel has set the bar for comic book movie adaptations and I expect them to live up to that standard. But also like Pixar they seem to drift into formulaic storytelling from time to time which they shouldn't be doing.

it was deeper than that. many times batman said "if only I was faster stronger etc" hr blamed himself. So two things 1 batman saw it as a chance to save his mom and get some redemption and 2 in the face of death superman pleaded for his moms life not his own, Batman realized he was a man with a mom not some superhuman with a god complex and therefore immediately regretted his actions and tried to redeem himself by helping supes. this is perfectly in line with comic Batman.

+mbreezy223 You are adding things that were not in the film, which is... something. The film as written was completely lacking in motivations for most of the main characters, so it would make sense that you add your own for them. With that said, the ONLY reason Superman said "I need to save Martha," and not "I need to save my mom," is so that Batman would realize that their moms have the same names. That's shitty writing.
@mbreezy223
@mbreezy223 8 жыл бұрын
+MasterFhyl I'm not the only fan who thought this. Not everything should be spelled out for us. We knew who these characters were coming into the film we were already aware of their trauma. Zach held nobodies hand with this film. Not only that if you paid attention they show how much he regretted his parents death throughout. We live in a generation of morons where everyone needs every detail explained through exposition. But this movie made you think and if you didn't know the characters prior then of course you'd think that. Anybody who understood the movie even halfway knew why batman stopped. The writing was on point.
@mbreezy223
@mbreezy223 8 жыл бұрын
+MasterFhyl And no, up until that point batman didn't know he had a earth mom. Or feelings for her in general. He said Martha so batman would figure it was a human woman, the names were purely coincidental. However when Lois yelled that's his mother it hit him he was just a man trying to save his mom. However I will say Lois sucked eggs in the film. Aside from that you're supposed to look beneath the surface and ask yourself what would make Batman stop, why did superman say that etc again anyone familiar with the source material drew the same conclusions I did its all over the internet I'm sure there is probably a website dedicated to that scene alone lol. Instead of writing it off like the few understand what that scene really meant cause it was definitely a turning point and the reason batman said he failed Superman at the end.

Hey Brad you will love this. The trailer for 'God's Not Dead 2' played before this movie, and it was the last trailer. It was kinda awkward, seeing it before the movie.

I think I've identified the problem with Superman in these. The filmmakers think he's supposed to be Wolverine.

The Jesus things been part of Superman before. The moody, "I don't know if I should be a hero or a worker in the Arctic" seemed inspired by the Wolverine movies to me.

I'm actually thankful for all the hate. All the hate had me lower my expectations so much, that it was better than expected. Problem is, you really have to know many different story arcs and versions of Batman and Superman from the comics to accept the insane choices made in this movie, but I feel most people don't. The desert scene implies that Lane died (which has nothing to do about the movie, because there the conflict is, that Martha might die) and made Superman a villian in a world ruled by Darkseid (the symbol on the ground) and his minions (the flying creatures). It's basically a reference to another comic, and a preview for the following movies, because Luthor announces the arrival of Darkseid.

Luthors plan to create Doomsday was really dumb btw, because it's something he got no control over. but I've got a fun theory: Luthor was obviously told of Darkseid when he acquired the kryptonian knowledge. What if he just created Darkseid as a test for Superman and as something to make them consider to unite and create the Justice League, to be prepared for Darkseid?! Would be kinda awesome, Luthor would not only be more intelligent than it seems in this movie, but kinda an anti-hero.

MforMovesets All that doesn't change how dumb and contrived the movie was, how boring it was and how no one has an arc. Not to mention all the waste-of-time subplots that never pay off. It was garbage whether you know all the billion incarnation of bats and supes or not.

Honestly this should had been a courtroom movie where Superman gets sued by Metropolis and Batman represents the people. Man I would have watched that for sure! Well to be fair to Batman he did used to shoot people granted it was in the comics and in his early days. Smallville Lex Luthor will always be my favorite version of the character.

Great breakdown of the shitshow, guys! One small bit to Brian: regarding Metropolis being in Delaware (If I think we're talking about the same map), whoever drew up that layout didn't know that it would be smack dab between beach resort towns and straight farmland. Useless trivia!

I liked this one much better than man of steel. I will admit that half of why I like it was that it simply showed things I never saw in a live action DC movie before. I liked seeing the trinity on the big screen. I also thought this was the best interpretation of kryptonite. It weakened him, but not render him completely useless like in past movies. The Martha moment was worked for me. I also thought it was truer to superman's character to not want to fight Bruce ( I will admit though it doesn't add up with his conversations with Perry and the bat mobile part.) I do have some personal nit picks like I feel like both Superman and Lois needed to develop more. Lois got in trouble too much and superman should learn from his mistakes more. Honestly though there is no live action superman that has made me feel like it's perfect. I'm a big fan of the 90's show and nothing comes close to that for me.The biggest problem is either the writing or editing. They needed some more scenes or different dialog to explain what was going on. I heard Affleck did rewrites on the set, which is probably why the batman stuff is the best. I really hope they have him on the writing team or behind the camera more for future movies.
