james whiting I'm running a .41 on my series. Boy does it hit. I always use a calculator to check the amps my build draw. Parallel was the one I was a little worried about. I run Samsung 25r I never went over 20 amps on my parallel.

I never figured it'd be the same draw from the battery either way due to the amps being used in a different way. I figured you'd get better battery life with parallel when using a regulated mod but it's interesting to see just how regulated devices use the energy

You might want to mention never to put a fully charged and a partially discharged or dead battery in parallel.. the current flow between them can be extreme due to the balancing effect of the parallel circut. Oh and thank you for everything you do. I have a feeling vaping would be far more dangerous if your testing weren't around keeping us informed and the companies in check when they inflate ratings. Thanks! While the current level can be high, as much as 30A, it is only for a short period of time and typically won’t vent the battery. Thermal runaway would be almost impossible just from this IMO. I agree that a charged and discharged battery should never be paralleled though!

Hi ​ Mooch, super awesome explanations! Just one thing I'm in little dissagreement and maybe you (or the community) may clarify as I might be wrong... when you state that a Series batt setup doesn't increase capacity, I agree, it doesn't, strictly talking about capacity it remains the same. But in fact those batteries will last longer as you are consuming half the current given you have now doubled the voltage (provided we are talking about the same load, to compare apples to apples). If instead you were maxing out the ratings and always aiming to get the most of the battery, then you must have had to reduce the resistance of the load to half of the original value in order to keep pulling 20Amps with twice the voltage and in that case that wouldn't be a fair comparison to "rate" a battery setup alone if it depends on the load. Right? Then I asked myself... If I want to somehow rate the setup by itself not messing with the load nor anything else but the batteries... isn't it there when we need the watt-hours??? At the end of the day I think what I'm getting confused with here is just that! because you will not increase capacity for a series, but you do double the watt-hours, being actually the same watt-hours for a 2P or a 2S, and both doubles the watt-hours you get with a single cell. So.. I thought I get it but I'm not completely sure whether or not I'm comparing apples to oranges.... Hope you can help clarifying! THANK YOU!

Yes, exactly. The capacity stays the same in a series setup. This is confirmed by drawing the same amount of current as was used in a single battery setup and noting the run time....which will not change. But for vaping you are correct. With a series setup we can lower the current we draw which allows for a longer running time for the (unchanged) capacity we have. So we can use the capacity spec for everything without problems but the Wh spec is MUCH more useful as it not only takes into account capacity but voltage too. This affects how hard a cell hits in a mech and how long a cell runs in a regulated device.

Sorry, I don’t. Usually the first sign that a battery is reaching the end of its life is that it doesn’t run for as long as it used to. If it runs hotter then it’s getting old too.

Regardless of how the math seems to work out, every parallel 2 battery regulated mod I've used outlasts even 3 battery series mods. Even with higher capacity but equally suited batteries. For example, the (parallel 2 batt) sigelei 100w TC compared to the newer (series 3 batt) sigelei 200w TC, 3 samsung 2500mah 25R5's in the 200 TC but 2 Sony woman VTC4's in the 100w TC parallel mod = parallel outlasting the 3 batteries with higher capacity. Where the tests I've done really shine is using all new 25R5's in both mods, the 100w TC would last 2 days with the same tank at the same watts, the 200w TC would have about 1/4 to 1/3 battery left at the end of the first day. I swapped the batteries around multiple times between the mods and got the same results consistently. So I compared the 100w TC to the wismec jaybo 3 battery series mod, same results with that mod. I used an external charger for all of this by the way. There is just something about parallel mods that really does last longer than series mods, the results I was getting was similar to my parallel unregulated mod also, just as a side note, as far as run time overall when matching the watts and current draw as closely as possible. But the parallel unregulated always beats the series regulated when trying the same thing. Again, even the 3 battery series mods.

Run time fundamentally depends on the cutoff voltage and the way you vape, including ramp up times for the coils. With all the variables accounted for any two battery mod shouldn’t be running longer than a three battery mod being used the same way. If it is there is a variable, or variables, that weren’t accounted for.

Hey Mooch, I'm a little confused about something and was hoping you can clear it up for me. For use in unregulated devices is it safer with lower builds to use a battery with a higher continuous discharge, or batteries with higher pulse ratings? Also if a battery has a higher continuous discharge is it safe to say that the pulse rating would be higher than that of a lower continuous discharge battery? And when looking at batteries for lower builds should I be looking at pulse ratings or cd ratings?

Pulse ratings are absolutely useless. We can’t use them for anything as we don’t know the length of the pulse, the time between pulses, or the criteria used to set the rating. Use the continuous rating. Check out Ep2 of my Minding Your mAhs series,

I’ve put a single coil Flat ni80 0.95ohm build in the Drop here to stay safe to see how it is before getting some new 18350’s, coming out to 8.8A and 74w. Nice flavorful vape but want to get some decent 350’s for it. I just don’t trust Efest batteries anymore.

I’ve ordered a pair each of Ampsplus & Keeppower 1200mah 10A batteries now, I think the Mah rating is slightly high and more like 1150 but they look like a good 10A battery. Not a lot out there, most of the popular ones are 5-8A. After a load of reading im pretty sure these use the old Aspire cell under the wrap, also from what I’ve read Vapcell use the same cell in their new 18350? Should be good. I’ve ditched the Efests, getting a little warm after 6-7 pulls so didn’t want to risk it.

Hey Mooch I have a Wismec Gen3 and where the battery door closes the two pins that complete the circuit to the bottom door one of the contact plates is worn through the copper not completely but enough to make it work,I started noticing it misfiring and I figured the mods not safe to use. Should I toss it ?

An improperly working mod is never a good thing to use. I don’t know if its safety is compromised or not so I am forced to err on the side of caution and tell you to not use that mod anymore.

I have one question. In an unregulated parallel setup, is there a point where addidng more cells no longer changes outcomes? I see all these homemade boxes at events with 10, 20, or more cells (guessing in parallel) and just wondered if that would offer any benefit at all?

Adding more cells will always increase the current handling (if the wiring and 510 can handle it) and vaping time but at a certain point the returns might not be worth the investment. Sure, 101 cells last longer than using 100 cells but it’s only 1% longer vaping time.

Idk if u will see this but I am thinking of getting the clutch x18 which is a parallel mod and up to this point I've been using a single mech and regulated mods so I'm a bit confused. If I put 2 molicel p26a 18650s in rated 25A each and charged to 4.2 volts. If I'm correct that would give me 50A. Then a build at 0.15ohms would that be safe to run. The mod says it can't exceed 37 amps or the fuse will crack. I did check on an Ohm calculator and saw that it comes out to 28A so it should be safe but I'm confused when u explained that one battery would be for example 25A and then u half the 2nd. I'm used to using a mech and I normally go to a .15ohm build and just vape until I feel like the battery is hitting weaker then switch. I just wanna make sure I can do the same thing with the parallel mod. Obv if I have 2 batteries at 50A and a .15ohm build requires 28A on 4.2 volt battery. As the volts decrease the amps required will also decrease. So I'm just wondering if I can safely drain the batteries the same way I would in a mech. Hope u can help and sry if I sound stupid, just wanna make sure I'm being safe.

That Clutch is a full mech so use the same calculations and safety. Cells in parallel don’t share current equally so many people half the rating of the second cell to take that into account…just in case. It’s up to you whether to do that or not. There’s no way anyone can predict how well your cells will share current when new and especially as they age.

In a HoG (para-series mod) is it useful to "marry" two and two pairs, so the same two always is in paralell? I have two married sets of 4 batteries, one set I have "the flash" wraps on, with two of them wrapped upside down, so the flash don't have to be upside down in the mod. but I ran out of special wrap so the other set is just plain green, with no way of knowing which battery goes witch way...

It depends on your personal preferences. A dual battery runs longer before needing charging but is heavier. A single battery mod is lighter but won’t run as long.

I wouldn’t consider that set married if one cell is acting a lot different than the others. It could be damage or a counterfeit. Consider the two to still be married though and remove that third cell. www.batterybro.com has an 18650 date code lookup tool you can use.

Yes, as long as you have accurate wattage calculations...wattage is wattage. You lose a bit of power going through the regulator circuit board, a few percent, though.

This video enlightens me so much.. Thanks for this video .. And i want to take this opportunity to ask this to confirm to one and only Sir Mooch.. For example, i'm setting up my limit of 0.20 ohms (or my minimum) on a single battery mechanical mod so that i cant go too far above 20A or 25A discharge rating (21A to be exact).. Is it safe to say that i can set my limit to 0.10 ohms in a dual battery parallel configuration of mechanical mod? Since i computed that it will land in the same 21A rating each battery, given it has a good connections and built. Hope you notice me Sir Mooch, more powers :)

The total current available in a parallel mod is not quite double the single battery rating since batteries do not share current equally. I recommend not using the theoretical doubled current rating. I recommend subtracting at least 15% from the doubled rating to get the rating to use, just to cover any unequal sharing of current.

Coil resistance doesn’t matter in a regulated mod, just the power setting affects battery current. You can use 30Q’s at up to 90W in a two battery mod, 120W if they aren’t allowed to get hot. Perhaps yours are fakes or you might need to switch to VTC5A’s, rated up to 150W in a two battery mod.

I say to NOT charge in the mod if series and unregulated. If you have a regulated mod with a battery voltage balancing you can do it. I talk about this in the video.

Many flat top cells cannot be stacked because their top contact does not stick out enough. There is nothing we can do safely about this. You will need to use different cells.
