@@OldGuyzGarage hello 👋 thanks for the great video just had a question why not hook one of these two the Positive Terminal please let me no thanks
@OldGuyzGarage
@OldGuyzGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you there are two reasons not to hook it up to positive. 1. Is the terminal size of the quick disconnect fits the size of the negative terminal. Most people don’t know that the terminals are two different sizes! Also the other reason and probably more important is the new terminal extends off the side of the battery, which means it can hit other metal especially if the car jerks and it’s close to other metal, this matters as it will spark if the positive side hits steal that’s grounded basically like hooking up both sides of your batter at same time this can short out your electrical system, burn fuses or even start an electrical fire! 😎👍. Great Question thx for asking! I probably should have been more clear about that in the video! Thx please subscribe if you haven’t already! 😎👍

@@OldGuyzGarage Yes, of course, the main purpose is to eliminate a parasitic drain, which I've now experienced on two different (modern) cars in the last few years. I was specifically replying to ThreeDaysOfDan's comment that it's also a good anti-theft device. Two battery disconnect knife switches are arriving here today from Amazon. I chose a knife switch over the knob type for the particular person that owns the current troublemaker car, as the knife switch is easier to understand.

Seems to me if that threaded bolt doesn't *lock* in place in some way, vibration or just sitting could change the bolt's position, either cutting power while in operation, or connecting it unintentionally while parked.

@@OldGuyzGarage The epilogue to that comment is that I got one, and found it had a tendency not to come loose (that I saw) but the opposite, to close the circuit when it was supposed to be open. I returned it to the store for a refund, and they didn't look surprised. I was testing continuity with an ohmmeter.

Hello, I am glad I found this video. I have been having a terrible time trying to figure out which disconnect switch to buy. I don't have a nice hot rod like you guys do, I only have my little 2006 Chevy HHR LT 2.2 and it is giving me fits with a parasitic draw. I know absolutely nothing about mechanics, but I am learning about this anyway. Can you tell me what would be a good disconnect switch for my vehicle. I wanted a remote switch, but they seem complicated. my battery is in the boot also, so that would have made it nice to be remote, but I am tired of dealing with it. My battery says it's a T5 Cold cranking 650 craking 800. It also says some other stuff (EN LBN 2) and (BCI 90) what ever that means. I like the disconnect switch you show here. What kind is it, and where can i buy it, if you think it will work in my car? Thank you in advance.

I did this to my 2000 GMC Safari. I ran a detour from the neg battery post to a switch mounted on a low spot on the dash. And it's the type of switch that has that red plastic removable key. I only use it if I know I'm going to be letting the van sit for 3 or more days in case of a parasitic draw, or if I know I'm parking in a high crime area, or maybe I want to work on the van and just disconnect the battery to avoid electrical shorts. The problem with this system is although it does save the battery, leaving it charged right where I left it, is that the computer system has to relearn what's going on and it causes rough starts until the battery guage reads +14v again on the instrument panel. I can see this system being more practical for old cars, hot rods, etc.

Why not do it on the positive side? If you had SOMETHING TO ground it would still drain wouldn't It???
@OldGuyzGarage
@OldGuyzGarage 2 жыл бұрын
2 Reasons why it’s NO Go on Positive terminal. 1) there new terminal fits the negative side most people don’t know or realize the positive terminal is bigger than the negative side. 2). The new terminal hangs off the battery a bit if it’s on the ground and accidentally hits metal like core support it will not short out as the body and Frame is already ground out or negatively charged but if the battery moves and the new terminal hits the core support it could short out your electrical system. The new terminal when turned counter clockwise disconnects your ground and therefore won’t allow motor to start! However the battery will not drain either as the juice can’t go anywhere!

Dude thats a ratchet wrench so couldn't you have just more easily put that on there to save the effort and wear on the nut :D I wish I had a ratchet wrench I have yet to get around to buy any....and those who own them don't even use em lol

A Foster, thx for your comment, I’m not worried about the wear on the nut still using a wrench 🔧. I haven’t had ratchet wrenches either to recently so never used them much until now but they are awesome! You should get some!!! Thx for watching! Please Subscribe if you haven’t already!! 😎👍

the Fred flintstone one with old style arc & 2 bolts in each side at autozone is misscing the plastic rubber insulator gizmo entirely, like a couple of caveman bricks that just detach, with knob. astounding dumness👋😒

Did not say why not on the positive
@OldGuyzGarage
@OldGuyzGarage 2 жыл бұрын
2 reasons! 1. Inside Diameter of Quick Disconnect fits negative terminal. Most people don’t realize the positive and negative terminals are different diameters. The reason is to mount the quick disconnect it may hang off the battery as it often does, if it were to connect to any steal parts near the battery like when the vehicle shifts or has rapid movement the battery may move and cause the positive terminal to hit core support or other close bye steal which is all ground out by the ground wire so you could have a serious electrical short if you put it in posited side and the battery shifted. Hope this helps thx for watching. 😎👍

$5 disconnect switch on a $250 battery. I don't know if I would trust that cheap switch to be reliable.

I understand what your saying we have had no issues and it solves a big problem of batteries going dead if you use your vehicle regular than you probably don’t need it.

but even if you get a less dum model, like yours - I noticed the rubber thread insulator doesn’t go all the way, - if only 1 of thE engineers put a permanent non-movable round ledge on bottom & top of bolt going through lower rectangle, & no threads on that portion, then 1 could make sure lower portion lowers, & raises.. maybe to advanced for the engineers? perhaps the 1/10th of a cent for 2 perm. washers & extra 1/3” of thread rubber is just too prIcE? inconCvabl moronisism😑
