For anybody wondering where the "energy" comes from in the battery, it comes from the energy used to smelt the metals from their oxides (ores) to make them pure metal.
@Groink15 ай бұрын
Well, that is exactly what is _not_ happening here. It is exactly the opposite: the pure metal Zink gets "destroyed" and "disappears" as Zink ions into the aquaeous electrolyte, creating a Voltage.
@Jimorian5 ай бұрын
@@Groink1 Correct, the zinc changing to an ion is what is releasing the energy put into the metal by purifying it earlier in a smelter. (or from recharging the battery to change the ions back into metallic zinc). My only point is that we don't get "free" energy from creating battery piles, we're only releasing energy put into the materials from another process earlier.
@EtepBeyard3 ай бұрын
This is a very interesting/important point. We (as a society) first have to input energy to drive the oxidation reaction in reverse to extract the pure metals from their ores. Part of that energy is then the "chemical potential" that can be liberated by the spontaneous forward reaction.

While PRIME has one of the better flavor profiles in the Electrolyte Drink section, and has extremely big amount of electrolytes in it... there is a slight problem. Well, not slight, but a potentially fatal problem. Electrolyte drinks usually contain huge amounts of sodium. Sodium makes them taste salty, and the saltiness has to be covered by something else (usually sugar). PRIME doesn't do that, it uses potassium as its main electrolyte, potassium in the form of non-sugar sweeteners. PRIME contains 200 times the ratio of potassium : sodium than what the human body ejects in sweat during sport. A person gets thirsty during exercise, causing them to take a drink. So they drink PRIME - this doesn't replenish the sodium their body needs, so the body stays thirsty, resulting in the consummation of more and more PRIME, possibly (under very extreme circumstances) resulting in potassium overdose, which can result in arrhythmia, which can lead to death.
@OmniversalInsect6 ай бұрын
I doubt any real athletes who need an electrolyte drink would actually use prime, but they still do advertise it as such so that's a problem.

It is generally recommended that children under 16 should not have energy drinks. The labelling for Prime Energy says 18 plus. The caffeine in Prime is two and a half times that of a Red Bull. As soon as you got over 6V from the battery, you already had more than enough voltage to power a microcontoller, like an Arduino, which typically runs on 5V (though some smaller ones will run on 3.3V). I wonder how long that battery would last powering a simple Arduino with minimal load on it?
@timharig5 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. They measured the voltage open circuit so you have no idea how much the output impedance of the battery is. If the output impedance is high, then attempting to draw much current will simply result in pulling down the voltage.
