I used to play with RC electricial models and I was always sceptical about that "no memory" thing. I used whole bunch of different types of batteries, from NiCd to Li-pol. I always used hi-end, competitive chargers that allowed me to see, exactly how many amp-hours actualy "got into" my battery (it also allows for charge-discharge cycling to regenerate batteries, setting your own charging current and much more fun stuff that taught me alot about batteries and electronics in general). Let me tell you: the better you treat you batteries, the better they gonna last and perform. And it's true for all types batteries, NiMH, Li-ion, you name it. ALWAYS try to discharge and charge them fully. Also, the lower the charging current, the longer the charging (obviously), but also the charging is better and moe efficient with the lower current (more Ah go in) and it's much better for the longevity of the battery. It is reccomended, for the long service of battery, to charge it with the current of 0,1C (e.g 2Ah battery - 0,2A charging current, which gives 10h of charging). Ocasionally, if you hurry you can increase it to 1C (1h charging), but not too often. It's not reccomended to exceed 1C, ever. It's weird to me that these days companies focus so much on performance of the phones, stuff like quick charging, but not the batteries themself. Plus you cannot exchange them easily these days and chargers are crap as always, which creates nothing but problems. And it's not even that difficult to make 5000mAh batteries that are small and fit in the phone (RC people used them for years).
@Intelwinsbigly2 жыл бұрын

@barnstormer3228 жыл бұрын
yup. because less ergonomic is better. wooo thanks apple.
@Hendlton8 жыл бұрын
+barnstormer322 Not a question of ergonomics but cost. If something is made smaller, it takes less money to make. That's why the new Pascal generation of GPUs is half as much money (on average) and same or better performance than the Titan X. Also, who wouldn't want a phone 3 mm thick. The thing holding us back from that are mostly batteries and 3 mm thick phones would sell like hotcakes.
@barnstormer3228 жыл бұрын
Hendlton Thinner means less comfortable to hold. I understand Apple's motives - a thinner phone is more aesthetically attractive - but that's about the only advantage other than cost for what is at the end of a day a less consumer-friendly device than a slightly thicker one due to the thinness and therefore lack of comfort. Also the GPUs are the same size, hence the almost identical cooling shroud. If you're referring to the die shrink, it's actually just as expensive in terms of materials because of an increased transistor count, not to mention the huge R&D cost associated with such a huge change.
@tennicktenstyl8 жыл бұрын
Hendlton not exactly. Smaller means higher precision means higher defective parts count means more material and energy loss means more manufacturing processes and development as every tenth of a millimeter shaved of a screen means developing stronger glass, better matrix etc, from case means stronger alloys or else #bendgate will happen again, that also means components will have to be more fragile and packed tightly on the PCB... And getting rid of 3,5 mm jack or having big ugly cases doesn't help...
@Hendlton8 жыл бұрын

If anyone is wondering why alkalines say 1.5v and NiMh rechargeables say 1.2v.... The very short answer is that alkalines drop to 1.2v when under load and NiMh stay at 1.2v under load or not. The reason why NiMh lasts longer in some devices is that Nimh hold that 1.2v almost uniformly until out of "juice." Alkalines droop to that 1.2v then continue to gradually droop below to 1.15v....1.1v......on so on until it's dead.

so what is better for what purpose? liion or lipo? for example in power banks, i see powerbanks made with either technology
@Hendlton8 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you're doing with it. Li-Po and Li-Io are really good performance but they're expensive and require a very precise charge controller because if they are undercharged, they will get damaged, if one of the cells is a bit more charged than the others, it will get damaged, if it's overcharged, it will explode and the explosion is not pretty, if it's even slightly damaged, it may also explode. You might have heard of iPhone 6 bending in people's pockets and burning them because the battery got damaged. Li based batteries are really good but also really dangerous. NIMH don't hold as much charge but are cheaper and safer. There are also lead acid batteries which are really good price and performance wise but they're usually really heavy so they're for cars or for electricity storage for solar panels or wind turbines.
@Pap98 жыл бұрын
+Hendlton yeah all that i know. but still that is no good info. explaining for example what is better for powerbanks (as i said it's possible to buy either) or what is forbidden on planes
@Hendlton8 жыл бұрын
Pap9 It doesn't really matter for power banks, the biggest difference in the lithium batteries is their size and like Luke said flexibility. The Li-Po batteries are more flexible and smaller so they're better for phones but there's not that much difference, if any, between them when it comes to power banks. I don't think any are forbidden on planes but if any would be, it's probably the lithium based ones because of their explosiveness and tendency to release toxic gases while exploding so not only would there be a fire and possibly a very large explosion but all people on the plane would be poisoned as well.

That gave them a poor reputation, and why they are so cheap. Protip tho, if you do a few full discharge cycles, you can recover some of the capacity, but not all of it. Lithium Ion batteries are better in this department.

+kakureru They absolutely are. I work in battery research, and batteries are probably one of the biggest areas of research right now in engineering circles. Lots of people who aren't selling batteries (phone, electric car, and laptop manufacturers for example) want longer lasting batteries to have an edge over their competitors. They also want longer lasting batteries that are smaller and thinner and safer.

Richard Smith Well that's certainly good to know, I didn't know you could do that. I was referring to the advertised lifespan though, which is about how long the manufacturer would expect until people need to buy more.

I am always confused when people complain about needing to plug their phone in every night. Like I get that we want to be lazy, but how inconvenient can it really be? You're likely going to be sleeping in a place that will provide such a outlet to plug your phone's charger into. I mean, I understand "progress" and all that, but honestly the people that think batteries are not good when they only last for 26 hours are fucking idiots. They are good, and anything past 24 hours worth of battery life is a luxury akin to a champagne really. It literally sounds like millionaires bitching that they only got to drink one bottle of Armand every night, and that's why I really wish batteries stagnate so people just shut the fuck up about battery life. People are idiots, thinking charging their phone every night when they go to bed is too much work.

If one just had to plug his smartphone when he goes to sleep it wouldn't be a problem, but look at the iphones: they die at 2 pm, and that's pretty annoying. And when you have you screen at max brightness in summer, with maybe Bluetooth and 4g active, there isn't any telephone that has enough juice to power that from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. That would be the goal, in my opinion

Thats why one should buy a phone based on what one need. Its simple: Need long battery life => Do not buy a phone with short battery life => Profit. My OnePlus2 lasts me for a day with full brightness, gps, wlan and bluetooth usage, up to 3-4 days when saving on energy. And as Sherrif said.. just plug the thing in overnight and stop crying.

you don't get it. Every night is just at mild use. The thing that really drives me INSANE is my phone suddenly draining to 10% by barely using it and then dying BEFORE i get home. It's not about being lazy and not plugging it in, it's about having the headroom and buffer should anything happen. It has happened that was going to meet up with someone and suddenly after half a day my phone died and couldnt do anything at all

I haven't used rechargeable AA batteries in years and now I need them for a trimmer. I have an old Varta charger which has been gathering dust for at least five years. According to info online it charges both NiMH and NiCd batteries so I guess I should be fine. I didn't know about that distinction.
@johndrachenberg22548 жыл бұрын
A couple important points that should have been included in the video: 1. You should try to keep your Li-ion battery fully charged as much as possible. Letting them drain completely will shorten their lifespan. 2. You should charge your Li-ion battery with a low-amperage charger, again for longer lifespan. Charging your phone with a high-powered charger may be more convenient in the short term, but in the long term, the capacity will be diminished.
