Incredibly awesome work! And yes, please talk to us in KWs and KW-Hrs!! Everyone who needs to run systems with multiple voltages on the same vehicle will figure out soon enough that Amp-Hrs is a lousy and confusing measurement to use for that purpose. It just doesn't fit multiple voltage conversations well. I'm trying to gear up my brain to get ready for 12-V, 24-V, 110-V, and 230-V on a 'retirement' cruiser. Your videos are incredibly helpful and entertaining for getting me to 'stretch' my mind to where it needs to go!

great video Scott looking forward to the next instalment in TSB. BTW: What are your views on installing a lot of onboard batteries and adding a new power generator to be used to top up the batteries so as to remove large diesel power generator?

That would be great but the real-estate on a boat is very limited for solar and the wind is just to dam loud in the boat so that does not leave much. A hydrogen generator a little to risky to run on a boat and hell I cant get propane in the Bahamas half the time so hydrogen is out of the question. Am I missing something plz always love new ideas...

Yes they are under 20k miles and a 1/16 of the cost of new.

Check the specs on your transmission/propeller for rated maximum torque. The motor you have is certainly an overkill. The higher the Voltage the less heat loss and longevity of your system. I have an 18kW motor at 48VDC.

Ya we wont be using but about half the torque and have the voltage or we could shred a sail drive in a few sec..

Hey Scott, I've ordered 4-3.2 volt 290AH prismatic cells. They are on the proverbial "slow boat from China". I'm expecting them in the next few weeks. I'm a newbie, but I'm watching and learning, reading and watching online. What would you recommend for a BMS when I build these? I want to make sure they will have a low temp shut off. Putting this battery on a 35" sailboat so I don't worry about too much load. BMS decision seems so arbitrary! So many choices, so few rock solid recommendations.

Well the pro to a BMS are they keep you from burning your boat down as well as balance your cells. Anytime you are dealing LIPO's you need some safety measures and the BMS is the head of the line. The new ones I had made have the temp sensor built in. I also have an over under volt sensor on the batts so the victron can shut them done in the event of an emergency. The cons are they can fail but if you make them modular you can change them quicks and easy and they add to the cost of the battery build... Well that my 2 cents work stay tuned for the inst coming up ina week or so...

Ya I totally agree the affordable BMS today are so hit and miss thats why I spec mine but with the C word china is just not producing like they were... I may have in stock depending on your specs shoot me an email I see what I have

Why didn't you use larger wires? Is your boat not 240 volts? With a second inverter, you could power both legs.

No boat is only 110 on 2 legs and off dock is combined to one leg on the generator so a second inverter would not help much and not charge off the generator. As far as wire gauge I have the batts dummed down to 30 amps each no need for the extra weight and wires are UL plus 30% over for safety.
