What is fun is the card hidden aspect. You never know what his under them and it gives more tension for the players. Just reciting the obstacles just lose the tension.

I think in this case it is more to track how many obstacles are left before the players completed the "chase" Remember there is a time limit, so normally players need to make decisions on how to tackle each obstacle carefully, sure some options are easier to pass, but they will take more time.

Too much GM intervention on step 3...seems better to say Indie rolled a nat 20 and got those results (i.e., the GM let him skip directly to 4 due to the crit)

Having the GM decide to skip a step is GM intervention, too. Good luck playing this game without it.
