I was bummed that Kirino led the strike, she was kinda cool. I decided to rewatch "Triple Point" S3E5... That totally makes sense now why she lead that strike. She told her Executive Officer, when he questioned her decision for sending the message to Souther. He reminded her it could get her charged with treason if sending the message turns out to be the wrong choice. She reminded him 74 ships are converging for a fight that is evenly matched and would likely kill them all, benefiting nobody. She said "War is an inherently unstable interaction of three things -intense emotion, politics and luck" that time she felt it would better to not fight the battle.She was risking her career. She knew the battle would be a stalemate. I am guessing this time she decided that it might get her killed, but if she is lucky it could end the war. Of course she is going to command the mission.

I'm generally a fan of the Expanse but I don't really enjoy this plot point much. Not even so much the martian defeat here, although that has it's issues, like 1. why didn't they scout and 2. why did they not dodge the rail gun rounds, whatever, we'll accept they were uncharacteristically incompetent and taken by surprise. However I'm kind of stumped as to how are these rail guns an effective defensive measure..? They're stationary. One could pop through the ring-gate with a fleet of rail gun armed ships, immediately fire at the station's guns, then either take evasive maneuvers or simply retreat through the ring. The rail guns on the station would then be destroyed by your barrage and are no longer an issue.
@MrAnthonyDraft3 жыл бұрын
Didn't there were railguns installed, a probe was sent, since they did get a video feed, but were too focused on Medina. In the show, they say that the ring station in essence has infinite inertia, so it stays in the same place after each shot, which, presumably means fewer calculations and more shots can be taken, plus, multiple railguns can target one gate. I am sure the battle or prep for it was longer in the books, but the show... shows the main action that is taking place and the revelation of a new problem for the joint fleet. Also, there is this whole new revelation that a certain mass of travel threshold makes ships go *poof*

This scene was really a let down. There is an automatic collision alarm from the ships computer, but no automated evasive maneuver from the MCRN ships that are full of advanced AI??? This would have gone down better if the MCRN ships had automatically dodged the rail gun rounds and managed to launch a MASSIVE amount of torpedoes at medina, which medina manged to defend against ALL of them with hundreds of PDCs/missiles (comparable to the donnager). Then the MCRN could have been taken out by a swarm attack from medina and the ring station railguns. Showing the MCRN ships automatically dodging railguns using their advanced AI would have also illustrated how terrible the belters were when the pella was chasing the Roci dodging by hand with manual controls.And showing medina able to defend itself from a massive attack would really be a game changer for belter tactics and capabilities. What we got was one of the most tactically cautious and forward thinking commanders in the sol system being used as cannon fodder... they really did a disservice to her character as far as im concerned.
@jpeg-man3 жыл бұрын
If i understand correctly, the point of having bigger more powerful railguns in the expanse is mostly projectile speed. Once your projectile is fast enough, it becomes impossible to dodge until a certain range. More powerful railguns have a longer no-dodge range. The thing about those massive railguns is that they basically become impossible or very difficult to dodge while you are in ring space, and since you cannot see into the ring, it carries a large element of surprise. So basically you cannot effectively shoot at it from outside the ring, and the moment you get in the ring, you get vaporized. The big problem with this setup is that it cannot move at all, so you could target it with your own railguns and PDCs easily. However, id be careful about not hitting the ring station, that thing does not take kindly to getting attacked.
@strykervalkyrion3 жыл бұрын
You can't dodge a ship mounted rail gun round within 1000km. These are giant rail guns which have even greater range. The ships can certainly dodge rail gun rounds as long as they are outside effective range but within the effective range the speed of the projectile is so fast that the moment the rail gun fires to the moment of impact is almost instantaneous. Even if the sensors could detect and try to dodge, the ship wouldn't accelerate fast enough with the gas thrusters to perform a roll. You're thinking in blockbuster soft sci-fi where the science is less important than the theatrics
@JeroenDStout3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. Its a good story beat but from a military pov it makes no real sense to me. It makes no sense that you'd fly in a straight line in a situation where you could be shot down; and the scene suggests that the station was seen firing 5 seconds before impacts started. I felt this was a scene where the shows normal sense of realism was suspended in order to make a cinematic moment happen.

@@JeroenDStout you bring up a good point, it would have made even more sense for the MCRN ships to have been zig zagging the whole time as soon as they broke through the other side of the ring. Had the rail guns STILL managed to take them out, well… that would be really saying something for the fire control systems on those rail guns. Either it was THAT good or Laconia had backdoor access to the flight control of the approaching MCRN strike group and could anticipate the algorithm. Imagine the scene afterward back in the xenobia when everyone is wondering if the belters managed to reverse engineer the MCRN AI or MAYBE there was something else or SOMEONE ELSE in play that was figuring out MCRN tech… So many ways this could have been made better, and it’s obvious that they are either losing or sacrificing their creativity as the dollar signs dry up due to the show ending…
@JeroenDStout3 жыл бұрын
Yeah! I like all these options. Even the things people say like the railguns were unexpected while firing at higher frequencies and velocities are fair but the show doesn't raise these questions or shows how this plays out in the way it is shot. Like the stakes could directly on-screen be made higher; do these railguns have extremely good AI control so they predict evasive actions (as you say)? Is there a backdoor into the MCRN ships? Are they firing flachettes? Are they simply 100× faster than regular railguns? Or did the Martian ships get within CQB because they were about to launch drop pods (as this video suggests) and this lead to them not correctly analysing the system? They could even just have fired at Medina only to have all their missiles be effortlessly shot down by the railguns, which then started firing on them; with the Martians withdrawing as they realised they could not evade these shots for a long period of time. That'd make the situation tense, have some evasive actions, high-G juice shots, etc., and make the ring station clearly unapproachable unless risking direct death. Instead its just... Kirino kind-of forgot about the existence of railguns.

All of these factions are weak. In terra invicta we can see xenoscums using violet lasers, advanced alien magnetic rails and missiles mostly. Bullet PDs(point-defence) are garbage. If a lot of missiles are fired from a substantial distance, there's little hope for the target. Laser PDs can hit from very afar-off, also being able to slaughter all of this outdated stuff.
