Problem is, it is not an exact number. Legions had anywhere from 4 to 6 thousand. And ancient writers usually name the legions which took part in the battle/campaign, but not the total of the combatants.

Octavian was smart in not engaging in a big land battle with Anthony. Also Agrippa is such a genius in combat and everything really, good thing Octavian had such a close friend like that.

Agrippa carried out a revolution in the Roman navy. He replaced the triremes used by the Greeks and Phoenicians with the liburnas, the ones he met during the time against the Illyrians.

More than friend, he was Son-in-Law to Octavian. He changed history and was instrumental for future and Augustus success. He was somewhat of a polymath, responsible for Pantheon and many architectural and other civic projects. Genius!

Agrippa, Maecenas, countless others whose contribution to Octavian's rise and reign made Augustus the successful emperor we know him as today. It's my opinion that the most important skill any leader can possess is the skill to find and motivate the right people for the right job.

Wrong. Octavian had the lesser part of the deal. Africa was the richest province in the Roman Empire at that time. Also the Easten provinces were rich and Egypt was especially rich in grain and would become essential for the feeding of Italy. Gaul and Italy were poor and Octavian had less legions alotted from getting those areas. What made it an advantage was that Octavian could spend all his time in Rome throwing propaganda about Anthony without Anthony being there and in turn turning the senators on Anthony. Lepidus was an old and well respected commander amongst the senate. It is true however, that he was the lesser part of the Triumvirate in terms of support from the senate and the people as well as claim to Caesar's legacy. And Anthony was an even bigger general. When the army of Lepidus met the army of Anthony the army deserted to Anthony without a single fight cause they were unwilling to fight the most respected veteran commander.

I like to imagine that in some ways the Eastern Roman Empire always existed, it just gained more and more political prestige until Constantine established it as the greater power base. The West was forged in the Samnite and Punic Wars while the East was always a takeover of the Hellenic sphere of influence, which is why the imperial court of the East embraced their heritage as both Greek and Roman, which was fitting because the Romans fell in love with all things Greek.

Crassus was rich, and both Ceasar and Pompei needed his money, so they had to treat him somewhat nicely. Wherein Octavian and Anthony only needed some guy to guard Rome while they were out campaigning against Brutus and Cassius. After that, they pretty much had no use for him, so they handed him Afrika to get rid of him.

The fact that Cleopatra's 4th korps simply fled the battle altogether after crushing Octavius' center is crazy. Imagine what an entire group of bigger ships plus the ones remaining of Anthony's center group could have done. It's like the Roman cavalry at Zama, all of a sudden coming from behind and crushing Hannibal's infantry. Leaves you wondering, history could have been different today

Great explanation of the Battle of Actium. One thing I think needs to be more precise is that after the Battle of Phillipi in 42 BC, Antony was seizing control of Gaul. However after the failed attempt to overthrow Octavius by Fulvia, his ex-wife, in Perusine War, Octavius managed to annex Gaul under his ruling.

Orest Paja Yeah buddy but RTW2 was an nightmare the whole game.!! Like ETW the 2 worst games from CA. They promised/show a lot for RTW 2 but the did not deliver anything and even with the updates the game is very very bad. These days i play the AoC dlc for Attila i and i have fun this is a nice DLC and the closest we go to Medieval Times if they don't make MTW3 or something.!

Close to 1,000 likes on a video posted earlier this month. That is pretty impressive, all things considered. There's a level of nuance and professionalism that shines through on this. I know a lot of folks are advocating a name change. In my opinion, KZbin seems to work more on related videos than like-names. For instance, I follow a lot of channels like MHV and BazBattles and so it was just a matter of time until I came across your channel. I think it's an "if you build it, they will come" scenario, if you consistently churn out videos with this level of quality and detail then you will blow up regardless of catchy name. Just my two cents.

I definitely think Antony was under the spell of Cleopatra with his weird decisions leading to the defeat at Actium. He did tend to be a maverick which didn't help him but was a tactical genius nevertheless. Octavian though politically astute couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag but had Agrippa which helped him immeasurably. In the end it was for the best as Antony would have been a crap emperor as he loved the east too much and was undisciplined but I have great admiration for him as a commander of men and tactician.

Mithridates Cleopatra should not have fled but attacked the flanks of octavian's navy. After they won the naval engagement octavian's army would have been surrounded and would likely have defected to Anthony.

it just seemed pointless because after abandoning the position, and losing everything she committed suicide anyways. She should have tried to keep fighting instead of fleeing. It may not have been enough but it might have worked.

If only Antonius had met Octavian in traditional battle, rather than facing Agrippa who was a seasoned naval general. Though bad morale, lack of senatorial support, sickness and lack of supplies were what ultimately defeated Anthony.

Antonius had a problem - he was losing his popularity in Italy and didn't want to look like an aggressor. That is why he basically stayed within his "borders".

wait a minute both octavian and antony had about 100,000 men yet earlier you claimed octavian had 45 legions under his command. doing the math 45 legions is 225,000 men so octavian left over half his army behind? 25 legions is an insane amount to leave behind, especially considering caesar conquered gaul with about 10

If you have Amazon Prime Video, there is an excellent free docu drama of Octavian with the now deceased Peter O'Toole. It explains it all. Lepidus had control of North Africa, where all the wheat grain was grown and exported to Rome. Unfortunately, Octavian had no money to pay for it, and Lepidus then starved Rome. Octavian always felt he had the support of the common people but with no free bread, rioting occurred almost bringing him down. Marc Anthony refused to give him money as Cleopatra wanted to bring Octavian down. Anthony's failed invasion of Parthia showed his military leadership was failing. The only military genius was Agrippa. Great history.
