The SS and other fanatics had nothing left to lose at this point. They either fought and took as many with them as possible, or be executed or sent to gulag. The regular army was just buying time for their fellow countrymen to escape to the west, to avoid soviet vengeance. That was pretty much the only motivating factors at this stage of the war. Hence why there was so little fighting going on in the west by then.

I see a lot of comments talking about "how could the Germans keep fighting at that point?" The best answer I've seen (and I agree with) is that the Germans knew what they'd done to the population/country when they invaded Russia and knew the Russians were going to have their revenge. A lot of soldiers were simply delaying the inevitable so civilians might escape West.

No one should say "God" like that because it is blasphemous, and enstranges us further from God, who loves us. It's a small thing but it's so easy to stop doing, seek Jesus and repent, because He gives all the things that you can't buy or fake that the world will tell you can be found anywhere else, like a purpose, a future, and peace of mind... sacrifice is the ultimate form of love, what does this world sacrifice for you? God sent His only begotten Son so that you might be saved. Christianity isn't an "us" and "them" thing, you can go to heaven too! Just seek earnestly seek Jesus, prayer is a good way to start

That is the German 9th army which was ordered by Hitler to relieve Berlin. Their commander ignored this order in an attempt to push west so that his troops could have the chance to surrender to the Americans. Although his order caused many soldiers to be killed. It probably ultimately saved more soldiers than it lost. As surrendering to the soviets usually meant over a decade of tortuous conditions in Siberia where a majority of German POWs died.

The 9th Army was a World War II field army which was activated on 15 May 1940. By 1945 the 9th Army were driven into a pocket in the Spree Forest south of the Seelow Heights and west of Frankfurt an der Oder. From inside the pocket west of Frankfurt the 9th army attempted a breakout to the west to join up with the 12th Army. The breakout, known as the Battle of Halbe, resulted in the destruction of the Ninth Army as a coherent force. Troops that were not captured or killed by the Soviets crossed the Elbe at Tangermünde and surrendered to the US Army.
