Two important lessons can be extracted from this video, that the best European mercenaries of that century were English and French veterans of the Hundred Years' War, and that the only ones who benefited from the conflict were the Milanese. I welcome the fact that you talk about more of the conflict of those times in both Italy and Spain, since there are several interesting battles that are not known, for example the intervention of the Black Prince in the Castilian Civil War, to give an example.

This conflict is considered part of the Hundred Years' War, because it had active participation between the English and French crowns, to gain Castilian support and its military fleet; I recommend that you read it, because its consequences were reflected in several historical events later, both in the war in France and in the future.

The English supported the wrong candidate, Pedro de Castilla was very arrogant and did not pay the English aid as they deserved, which ended with the abandonment of support and the French taking the lead with the usurper Enrique de Trastamara, who won in the end. The consequences were so serious that it cost the Black Prince his life, in addition to being an economic disaster due to the expenses of the campaign and all despite the fact that the Battle of Najera was a resounding victory for the Spanish-English side; however, They did not manage to put an end to the rebellion, so it was Pyrrhic and ended with the Castilian fleet supporting the French fleet throughout the rest of the Hundred Years' War.

For someone interested about John Hawkwood there is a 49 chapters manga about his employment in France and the campaign he joined that ultimately led to the battle of Crecy. The art is excellence, the strategies and military maneuvers were extremely well depicted and so you should check it out now. Unfortunately the manga wasn’t popular or else it would had received a longer runtime. Anyway it is almost like Vinland Saga in term of art but with Medieval France setting, Hawkwood and the Black Prince as the main duo, and the Royal French Army as main antagonists, so what more could one even hope for?

Then after the formation breaks apart, you somehow managed to run towards the nearest city gate, while being pursued, only to find the gate shut because the enemy can't be allowed in either. I feel like a chapter of the story is missing at 9:45. Ubaldini is chasing Serego with a larger army, however during the defense of Padua and afterwards Paduans are outnumbered by the Veronese. So I'm wondering what happened to this army? I can understand they might not have made it to defend Padua on time, but where did the army go after? Did their contracts expire, was Padua unable to pay them?

@@sirmagnifus7350 it's awesome it's called :carthage bellum punicum: it's about 4 bucks on the Play shop or the apple store. I got it on the play shop. But it's a small battle sim that uses the same kinda blocks for units as the videos. It has a campaign mode and a few historical fights. It's not a huge game but it does have a small economy mechanics, with a upgrade system and technology tree and a basic to hardened veteran skill system. It's kinda sweet for 4 dollars. It's like a really small total war campaign. That has carthage invading through the top of Africa into Gaul and threw the alps to Rome itself. I thought it was cool. You can set up units and employ old battle commands with messengers and stuff. It's kind cool I think. It even has a few sneak attack battles.

This was a combination of factors, on one hand you had the struggle between the HRE and the Pope, each city state would select who to support in base of their rivalries and on the other hand Italian unification always came with the question of who would be the legitimate ruler to unify Italy under his banner. This and the internal instability of the governments of each city wasn't the best recipe for Italian unification.

For this reason much of Italian history has been either coalitions of city states, or large failed stated ruled by shadow governments known as mafias.

The true winner here was Gian Galeazo Visconti , notwithstanding John Hawkwood’s military feat . What a scheming machine that Visconti was ! unbelievable ; his scheming was on par with his military activities , it was not auxiliary to them , but a true an equal second prong of the same paired magnitude.

Now this was exciting to watch how the experience and boldness of a man resolved a stalemate situation. - Reading "mercenary" in the title I thought of Conrad of Montferrat (died 1192) whose life / history march was likewise astonishing. He was the very protector of Tyre against Saladin. A good survey is by Werner Goez (cf. th German Wiki article). Conrad would be really worth a video.
