You should make a trench line but make it the way you made the mortar pit, not with standard trenches but with custom built fortifications. And then have like 5 companies attack it. And then if you want to make it really late war, add tanks and planes lol.

Hey Diplex just a heads up. The French didn't say "On va leur percer le flanc" since the 19th century. Plus it would only be adequate if they truely are piercing their flanks.

Oh, and the French were prepared at the start of the war. They made a major assault against Germany which was then pushed back by superior German artillery and somewhat entrenched positions, then allowing Germany to attack. The German attack was then stopped at the battle of the Marne, leading to trench warfare from that point until the end of the war.
