Fun fact, there was some foreshadowing with there being a new boss of the Penguin cavern. In the boss description of the King Penguin at 30:06, it says, “ Lord of the cavern…. Or used to be. ”, which is hinting that he got dethroned by the Divine Penguin. Goes to show there are some nice details in the enemy descriptions.

I don't know if you noticed, but it looked like Marsha ran away from Anton more quickly than her normal speed as she passed him. Also, the Museum was in the east block, same district as Anton loiters. You might have to load an autosave to see Jimmy there now.

1:21:20 that fight is winnable, there's no need to grind lvls or anything, it just seems harder than it is because you didn't equip accessories to prevent confuse. And as you noticed in the penguin boss dungeon, the chests usually give items that are useful against the enemies in that area, so its good to equip them right away. That's important to keep in mind since Sky SC has a LOT more enemies who inflict status effects than in FC, so you can expect more fights to end like that, and 9 times out of 10 it's simply faster to flee/lose the fight, load a save and equip whatever accessories you need rather than try to bruteforce it and waste a lot of healing/revive items. Also remember your buffs, La Crest helps a lot to reduce damage.

Honestly, some of my favorite moments of this game are the airship trips between regions. Getting a second to check in with your whole party is just so nice, plot-relevant or not.

To give some context on why the OVA isn't well liked: firstly, it completely writes out multiple important characters including Zin, Kevin and Weissman. The erasure of Weissman isn't so bad because the OVA only covers the first half of the game, so his parts in scenes can mostly be siphoned off by Camponella or Louwe without too much issue. On the other hand, writing out Zin really doesn't work, requiring the fight with Walter to be finished by having multiple characters who haven't shown up yet in the story to show up and end the fight (though the resultant battle is easily the coolest shit in the OVA). The story is mostly just a montage of some (emphasis on some) of the major bossfights from the first half of the game, starting immediately from the end of the opening scroll with the Phantom Thief B fight. If it was just a boss fight montage, it probably wouldn't be as disliked, but it spends time building up to the Walter boss fight specifically, a wild choice as its the one fight that was changed the most. Additionally, having Estelle and crew fight the Enforces on their first meeting as opposed to fighting minions makes Estelle in particular appear completely incompetent, overwriting any character development she experienced and undermines the literal main character. I personally am just mad because it cuts out chapter 3 completely which was my favorite chapter by far. Edit: I had completely forgotten Kevin was written out of the OVA originally as well, which was definitely a decision.

The problems with the Trails in the Sky anime go so much farther than just "not having the aspects that make the game enjoyable". First, there's the fact that the anime ONLY ADAPTS SC! There IS no FC adaptation! They just skipped right to this. The second is that, as I understand it, Zin and Kevin DO NOT EXIST IN THE ANIME! They just fucking remove them entirely. It's fucking baffling.

If I can be "that guy" for a sec, here are some pronunciation tips: Arseille = "R-Say" Hamel = "Hommel" (like pommel but with an H) Rege/arge/selge = it's a soft G, so like "large" without the L Zin Vathek = later games pronounce his name like "Jin Vaw-tech." Personally, I pronounce it like "sion" in the word "fusion" to justify the Z. Really looking forward to seeing the rest of your playthrough of this game, and hopefully the rest of the series if you're up for it.

I feel like the hate for the OVA is very overblown. I imagine people approach it as an actual adaptation of the game and then leave disappointed, but it was clearly never meant to be that considering how short it is. It was definitely designed for people who already played the games and wanted to see a few key scenes of SC animated, and nothing more. Also, it is surprisingly well animated and choreographed, I was not expecting that. Definitely give it a watch once you're done with the game, but take it for what it is and don't expect more.

So about the OVA: The OVA is basically just a movie length highlight reel of several moments from SC (this does mean that you shouldn't watch it until you have at the very least beaten SC). Which, as you might've already guessed, isn't enough to fully develop any of the characters or showcase much of who they are. Not to mention the complete lack of FC meaning you kinda end up seeing these characters in an unestablished way while they should've been established already. HOWEVER, just because the OVA does not work as a standalone way to tell Trails in the Sky's story does not mean the OVA is necessarily bad. While the story beats are set up in a slightly different way to make the OVA flow better and the writing and adherence to canon suffer as a result what remains is still worth watching. Rather then viewing it as a standalone show, I personally like to view it as both a glimpse into what Trails would've looked like with a proper anime adaptation and a cool way to revisit cool moments from the game (regardless of if they actually happened that way or not). What the show lacks in the writing, characterization and worldbuilding it makes up for in soundtrack and anime style animation, which I find a fair-enough trade since the game already provides the former and good soundtrack, while the OVA is basically just a bonus. Think of the meme with the person sitting in front of two cakes, some might look at the OVA and view it as the lesser cake, I just view it as having more cake!

Small piece of advice to help a little bit with fishing, since you do not pull up your rod by just pressing A if you press it with a rhythm of about half a second to a second between presses, it bypasses the mashing trigger and you should be able to just catch every fish by counting Mississippi’s between A presses.

The Mad Tree bounty monster in the sewers is really hard to beat, but it hangs around for a long time too so you can give it another shot after getting some levels. This might be where the Move command comes in handy - you can move people farther away from the enemies or away from each other so their AoE attacks won't hit multiple people at once. If you do that and have anti-confuse accessories on all your characters then I think it'd be a lot more manageable!

Fun fact, if you fish in the Grancel Port area with using roe as bait, you can catch either Rainbow Trout or Salmon. The Rainbow Trout will give you sepith and the Salmon can give you more roe. So with a bit of luck (and possibly some save scumming), it's possible to fish that spot infinitely without running out of bait.

Trails always has some very funny choices for NPC names. The reporter you talked to in the airship is named "Noticia", which literally translates to "news" in portuguese. There's actually a lot of names that are portuguese/spanish sounding in the series. I wonder if its a localization thing.

So fishing has two tips you may want to remember to give you a heads up. First off, the mashing thing is actually because there is a kind of rhythm to when you can pull up the fish, and basically, if your mashing and just slow down your button presses it increses the chance you will pull whatever fish you get even if its a fast hook. Some fish are so fast it's unreactable, so it's helpful to know this. The other tip is to always save at a new fishing hole so that if you do miss, your not losing bait for it.
