Having grew up in Coldstream for most of my younger years, I was given the privilege of becoming the Coldstreamer in 2002. This was a great honour and one of the many tasks was to lead a mounted cavalcade from the town to the memorial cross on Branxton hill to pay homage to the dead of both nations. One comment that continues to return from the cross is just how eerily silent it is there. We then cut a sod of earth from the hillside, then wrap it up in a saltire to be carried back over the border to the sight of the monastery where a small ceremony is held and " flowers of the Forrest" is sang. Great video !

Another superb exposition, this time of one of the greatest military tragedies in Scottish history. The butchers bill was just phenomenal. I find the late mediaeval attitude to chivalry intriguing - they were just as fond of looting, rape, murder and theft as any of their descendants, and successors, but going out of your way to lose would be totally incomprehensible to a Norman king! A poignant mention at the end, amity is better than emnity, ploughshares are better than swords, or perhaps tractors beat tanks. Either way, your humanism and decency shine through in these horrid times. Thank you!

Reminds me of a 'saying' my old man used to be fond of... "If at first ye dinnae succeed..., pull yer foreskin o'er yer heid" lol. Personally i regret never having the chance to come back to the homeland of my forefathers... So much family history to be 'rediscovered'. I grew up here in Australia on stories from my nanna that facinated me but i now believe to be her way of 'inspiring a love of history' through fantasy... So much convoluted information it's impossible to find the truth without going to the source. In one account an ancestor was an 'aide de camp' to RTB in the infamous cave with the spider spinning it's web (origin of the above correct saying ie; try, try again). Another is family tree inscribed in the stones of Edinburgh Castle. Ties to Scot nobility but having to change name to Drysdale to avoid discovery and persecution. Even as far out as curses by a witch to explain the 'irony' of there only ever being one male child born to bear the line past a certain point (of which i am the last and childless)... Facinating stuff for a kid but leaves me confused as hell to the truth now i'm an adult...

Fantastic video, as is all of your work. Whilst there is a always fascination in these glorified battles, I think current events remind us of the futility of war and the evils of the rich spending the blood of the poor to take what isn’t theirs. I think you got that point across really well with the rugby analogy.
@TadeuszCantwell2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting about the early modern period begining in the 1500's compared to the early 1600s in Ireland. I always find the manoeuvring on different types of ground and unit formations a fascinating insight into how battles were won and lost. Oh and I'm impressed with the audio quality as you switch from in person to VO on the cutaway shots, many YTers have a dips in audio levels when doing this.
@thegreyarea-WPP2 жыл бұрын
Your rugby analogy is so perfect. I'm an Englishman and a Bath man, yet I spent time living in Gloucestershire. I played many gigs in Gloucester whilst wearing my Bath Rugby shirts and there would often be comments like ‘you're brave’, yet the same people would applaud the show and drink with me after. I've played in Glasgow and Edinburgh in an England shirt too, and again there's been a bit of joking about it and then good camaraderie right after. I also need to say that I love the videos you do Bruce, for their historical facts and for their humour. You're simply fantastic to watch and listen to and I'm really grateful to you for posting these. You do an amazing job of storytelling and I'm glad KZbin led me to your videos some time ago.

As an American with many Scottish ancestors, I can not express my appreciation for these videos. Bruce, your great talent for storytelling makes these videos so much better than listening to a normal history documentary. Your choices of content is great as well. I think that many present day Scots struggle to understand the fascination that Americans have with Scottish history. The USA is a very young country compared to the European countries. Many Americans only have 200-300 years of history in America, but their ancestors were in Scotland for a thousand years or more. We don’t have the luxury of having a lot of history out our front doors. We don’t have castles or ancient battlefields to visit. Things that modern day Scots take for granted are totally new to most Americans. We have much more family history in Scotland and other European countries than we have in America. Thanks for taking the time to share Scottish history with us in such a way that only a true Scot can.

However, and I am from south of the border, a large number of Scots refer to it as England v Scotland. I even found this in Edinburgh at a history talk in one of the squares. The students who were giving it were quite unaware until I mentioned it. Is this how the education system in Scotland prefers it?

What can I take to unhook from the habit of watching these programs; I have paperwork to do before I die? Sir Bruce, another hypnotic narrative, fortunately aided with text. It's a wee bit small, but better than listening only. The favorable points of this program were to tell me about that Battle, and the story of the song I have listened to many times. I have been to most of the venues of your programs, but not Floddon (spelling?) Field. Your programs are far too academically dense to watch but once, however. I need to watch them a couple of times. Also, I share that they are as distracting and diverting me from my problems as must occur during a game of golf. I don't think about anything but your video work and your comments. R. This was one in a long list of disastrous campaigns the Scots embarked on at the behest of the French. Now, you would think that France, with a population several times greater than England, should have been able to deal with the English army fairly easily, but King David IV did what he considered honourable as part of the auld alliance and came to a sticky end. The auld alliance was rather like the 'special relationship' today in that it primarily benefited one side.
