A joy to see a stunt horse in action : 0:48 a few side steps to stop forward momentum , rear up , turn the head to the opposite side of impact , fall (actually, a roll) onto hip/shoulder , jump up , completely unharmed , ready for the next take . If you see a front end nose plant , the horse has been tripped . Laws against that .

Considering how movies have been made over the course of the years I doubt they even did it on purpose. My guess is that they just needed to make sure that while they were filming actor A could see actor B and didn't actually spend enough time stopping to think about how it looks to the audience. The good news is that the retro Westerns didn't usually get too much wrong. This is because at the time some of the veterans from final battles between the settlers and the natives were actually still alive. The moment these veterans finally died they went from almost every native soldier having a gun to suddenly depicting them as just having bows and not even knowing what a gun was even though at that point they had already been using guns for centuries.

@@rachdarastrix5251 They "didn't usually get too much wrong"? Fort Bowie, which is in Cochise County of southeast Arizona, which can be seen in my Cochise County playlist, didn't even have any surrounding fortressing, no upright timbers forming a wall. It was wide open, as most all forts were. There were many errors in old movies.

A most enjoyable romp - I'll try to ignore Midland's comment below that it's all bs. Had to laugh at the increase in the braves' numbers, though - at the start of the raid there are about 20 of them on horseback, yet as the battle progresses there seem to be more and more each minute, despite their losses. Dooooooo like that sexy Apache female on horseback - she's hot!

Not a good entry in this list. There never existed any fort like this in the American west, nor was there an Apache attack on a garrisoned American fort in the entire course of the Apache wars. Where would they have gotten all those logs? And why would the Apache attack a fortified position? They were tribal raiders, not Sharp's Rifles. The forts west of the Mississippi were built of brick and adobe, with buildings situated to give each other cover fire.

@@danhoffman9232 The Apaches of Arizona did, some of them, travel by horse. They did attack and overcome Fort Buchanan in February of 1865, which ended that fort's use. They came by foot and by horseback that day. It was 3 miles southwest of the present-day town of Sonoita, in present-day Santa Cruz County, and that day was the last for that fort. It had no exterior fortification, it was wide open as most all forts were. It wasn't just a raid. Arizona is home to 21 tribal nations, and some of them still have horses. Yes, the Apaches used horses.

I like how they depict Fort Bowie as just being a few cabins with a pathetic little wooden fence around it when during the 1870s it had developed into a star fort with the latest artillery type called 12inch breech loaders and had gatling guns and 3 trenches guarded by 2 gatehouses. Just kidding I wouldn't know. ;)

Why would Apaches attack in the daylight?
@midlandredux6 жыл бұрын
In the entire history of the Western frontier, there was only one attack on a fort. That was in Minnesota. The Apache were skirmishers and raiders. They would only approach a fort to steal the horses.
@videoadventures58646 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the detail. Looking at the fort, I thought they could take it -- if they went in at night. I cannot watch these stupid melodramas. When the movie producers made the Cowboys and Indians stories, did they not realize that every fallen Apache meant a family without a father, brother, or son? And every bluecoat soldier signed up only out of desperation? As the life of last resort? The Europeans had an endless supply of desperate soldiers. And the indigenous, only their fathers and sons. And in time, the indigenous ran out of fighters. And so the West was won.

Most people in modern times don't know how the Apaches lived during that time. The other tribes knew, as the Apaches raided everyone, all the other tribes included. That's why they had no friends, no alliances, no other tribes to help them or to watch their backs, because they raided everyone, and that included taking captives and killing. There are 21 different tribal nations in Arizona, and the only ones that helped Apaches were other Apaches, because they attacked everyone. This was how they lived.

The Apaches, the band known as the Chiricahua Apaches (who are portrayed in this movie), were destroying themselves before the descendants of Europeans arrived, because they were raiding and attacking everyone, that means all the other tribes, including taking captives and killing, such that they were hated by the other tribes. They would steal all the hard-worked winter stores of the other tribes (who were skilled and industrious, who farmed), leaving them to starve while they feasted on stolen foods. Other tribes lost family members and horses too, to the Apaches, so they had a long running reputation by which the other tribes hated them. As a lifelong Arizonan, members of other tribes have told me these things. There are 21 different tribal nations in Arizona. Because of their raiding and killing practices (that is how they lived through the centuries), their numbers had already dropped greatly, and by continuing in their ways, their numbers greatly plummeted. They didn't work for their sustenance like the other tribes, all they did was raid continually. That's how they lived, they were renown for it.

As I understand it, it was quite mutual, in actual history. The Apaches had no qualms about indiscriminate killing. Other tribes here in Arizona have said that about them. They didn't just raid non-indigenous, they raided everybody, the other tribes included, and raiding included stealing, taking captives, killing, and stealing included more than just horses. Raiding was their way of life, that was how they lived, how they ate, they stole. I've spoken firsthand with other tribes-members, and this is what they have said. Local historians have said the same thing. Arizona is home to 21 different tribal nations. Their raiding and killing of other tribe's members is why they had no one to back them up when tougher times came. They had created enemies of everyone around them, so no one would help them.

@@kwd3109 Other tribes worked hard to grow, harvest, gather and store away food for the tribe for the winter. That was their winter sustenance, how they lived. Imagine how they felt when all that was stolen by Apache raiders, when their family members were taken captive, animals too, when their tribal members were killed. Those tribes would have to start from scratch during winter just to survive, because their winter-stores had been stolen. They'd grow thin and barely survive because of it, while the raiders were sitting fat and happy eating the stolen food, having done nothing to grow, harvest, or gather it. They sometimes sold captives into slavery in Mexico, trading them for a cow.
