Lieutenant General Kuribayashi often fought by building an 18km underground tunnel instead of using special suicide bombs, out of respect for his subordinates.

American losses are mainly wounded, on the Japanese side 95% of soldiers died. 7,200 American soldiers dead, 21,000 Japanese soldiers dead (out of 22,000 Japanese soldiers engaged in the battle).

American non-lethal casualties can be treated because US have good medical facilities. Whereas in the Japanese side, even a small injury can lead to death because proper medical facilities are almost non existent. In almost every battle, 60% - 80% of Japanese casualties are not from firefights but from starvation and diseases.

The point was to make Americans pay. And it was done. It'd be even larger if some of the officers under the Japanese commander decide to not do a suicide charge against the Commander's orders, reducing the defending side's numbers.

This is like one of the few battles where the ratio was skewed against the US in the Pacific theater. Kuribashi and Japan fought smart and to near the last man.

I think "casualty" in this context means if they're injured at all in the fighting, not only dead.

Since I'm not historically ignorant, I know about both battles. You could do something so that Kursk is better known. Instead of crying about it. You're most likely a Russian nationalist who's butthurt that your country's battles don't get as much attention as you'd like, anyway.

The US intelligence was so bad here. But then again they could only go by what they saw ground level, not the miles upon miles of underground tunneling the Japanese did. Poor marines.

Numbers are completely wrong US lost about 6000 man and another 17000 wounded thats 23 000 (+3000 navy) total and Japan lost 18 000 man (7500 navy).

Difference between axis and allies. Axis soldiers are so skilled and trust their skills,meanwhile allies dont know how to fight and randomly sent man to fight and trusted their numerial superiority

According to most sources the US casualties were 25,000 to 26,000 with 6,000 to 7,000 killed. So with that being said. Why did you put 53,000 US casualties? How did you get that number?

The US casualties in this are way off, like more than double. Total casualties for the US were around 25,000 of which 6140 were killed... Japanese lost around 19000 killed and rest were captured or never found.

He's counting wounded. So probably 60% of the American casualties are wounded. Japanese were probably 90% dead or something like that. Japanese mainly survived if knocked unconscious and captured then woke up in prison.

it was a well established fact from both sides that the americans would overrun the island. The point of holding out was to increase american casualties and deplete their morale as they knew the americans at home would get mad if there were casualties.

@@UnfunnyDaffenDales98775 there were around 60 thousand fatal american casulties in the vietnam war. Prior to reaching this number there were numerous protests and strikes. The conflict became increasingly unpopular. This is one of many examples of the us not being able to tolerate casualties. It is simply a fact.

No, many pilots were able to land their damaged planes on Iwo Jima as soon as the airfields were captured. This also brought the war to an earlier end, saving millions of East Asians who were still suffering under Japanese occupation.
