When you outnumbered your enemy 3 times or more and it is a normal average battle you can surround them easily by flicking them without they notice. For example 3 to 1: use 2-1 against them in a very normal battle step up at a defense position or a multi layered V upside down pointing at the enemy formation or as a square of three columns or as a crescent ect.. try to fake your numbers more than they are. And fight them there with the purpose of longterm battle. Chose a mountain area or close thin - not so thin - but not so open area ... it would perfect if on a step hill or a big hill in general. While station most of your cavalry like 2/3 with second army away far away from battlefield like hours away (so the enemy don't find them) or hide them 30 mints away with the woods. Then after the battle goes for a while send a massagener a single to mobilize in a crescent run in to the back of the ememy outside of their view. This can be used to fake their victory by acting as defeated with faint retreat combined with some fighting to make it more convincing multiple times snd drag them in to make them think they win. Then when they go back home the main army ambush them. When they want to regroup the so called defeated routed force strikes from the back. This can very easily works as they can't count or estimate that accurately. Therefore when they see you outnumbering them by a lot it is very difficult to distinguish wither this force is 2x or full force 3x. They would not exactly know your numbers. Thus if see a bi force they would take it as main one. Especially if you do some acting. On open battle failed as you outnumber your enemy alot a Crescent combined with a second line of a V formation of small squares is the way to go. Especially most importantly the Crescent formation or W. It allows you to eat the opposite side from 3 sides as you stretch a bit by bit as you lower them. You can stretch in or out or both or in a frequency. You can eat their energy and progress by wobbling with them thus turning their attack to a defense. It can open points where you could cut them in half too.

As an Austrian. This content is highly appreciated. Wonderful job as always and u history guys on KZbin put the television content to nothing less then shame. Keep up the great work. Big fan of your work on Caesar (antique fan boy) and Michael the brave (who I knew nothing about before that pieces I saw on your video). Nevertheless I also enjoy that u have a good focus on the Islamic world, since my knowledge on that subject is/was rather limited compared to western history. And u seem too have a low/no bias (I believe we all are biased to some extend, that's why I included low rather then no bias only) The ottoman/Turkish history is particular interesting to me since it's the bridge between the Islamic and Christian world to this day. The struggle between the Habsburgs and Ottomans is, since it's part of my ancestors history, something I lately put more focus in, so the timing on this video is welcomed.

Worth mentioning, Hassan pasha the ottoman ruler of Bosnia and the initiator of the Ottoman conquest of northern and western parts of Croatia, was a Slavic Muslim from Bosnia Viyalet. The Unmodern Ottoman Army argument is wrong for the 16th century. Thanks to the research of Gabor Agoston, it's proved that the Ottoman army wasn't different than the European ones. The problem that happened in Long War was due to financial problems.

You're most likely right, the stereotype of the aging and unmodern Ottoman military only started to become true in the 1700s. The Turks just couldn't organize and modernize their militaries like the Western powers at that point.

@@21stEidein that was because of Russia and Persia constantly fighting them and inner fighting causing economical problems. Also because they didn't use arabs and mamluks to fight in Europe. The forces used to take Constaintopal where 100k solders that only counting 1/3 of the land of a small Ottoman Empire. The Empire became more than 5× + bigger and the army size just got doubled. Egypt alone has an army of 200k mamluks (not counting possible recruits). In 16th century Ottoman Empire can easily have 600k+ armys just like Mughals. However, they didn't because they keepet only relaying on Turks from Balkans. They even rely use solders from anatolia turks whom much vast in numbers. One of the reasons moving soldiers long distances is expensive but it is not that expensive or hard and can be done. Again Mughal and China does that. Even considering turks of the Balkans their 200k standing army is only standing as job. But they can add an additional 100k or 200k if they wanted to when necessary of highly trained contractors and conscripts. Agin they don't. 200k Ottoman Empire Sultanate standing army of Balkan turks should have been one of many other armies and it should be called the sultan army. Perhaps where thinking that making other armies might overthrow the ruling trabe family and high turks. I don't think that is a think. But it is confusing why. It certainly would have win them more victories. Especially their important losses would be impossible to lose. Like the siege of Vienna inside of 200k but 400k or 600k ya winged housarys would be powerless to change anything. Anyway turks have a problem with losing from getting attacked from the back lol. Like in Vienna battle siege if they walled with stones and wood and put cavalry back and some forces to watch the back and some others scout and scan the area constantly they definitely considering their 200k numbers big size no way would lose.

And you have to equip every soldier with the best armor and weapon at the time and keep improving those takes time... so not all the soldiers used to have the best equipements even if they were from the same rank. Mass production was limited be it weapons or armour.

Excellent video as always, although I recommend that you make a correction on the map: it is a mistake to put the regions of Milan, Franche-Comte and Luxembourg, as part of the Austrian Habsburgs, since those territories did not belong to them until the War of Spanish succession at the beginning of the 18th century (with the exception of Franche-Comté which was conquered by France at the end of the 17th century). What I mean is that at the time you place the video, those three regions were part of the Habsburgs of the Spanish Empire, who defended it until the crown passed into the hands of the Spanish Bourbons; Greetings, continue with videos of those centuries. =)

As I enjoy your videos, I should say there are many mistakes you did my friend. You portrayed Janissaries as "elites" of the Ottoman army which is totally wrong, especially for this era. Main threat for European armies as European observers state was Sipahis. Even in 17th century, European observers state that European infantry is superior to Janissaries yet, Sipahis still superior to any European cavalry. And as a side not, when Ottomans entered Eger, they massacred all mercenary soldiers but spared Hungarians which you mentioned in the video but there was an exception. Numbered around 250, mainly Italian mercenaries remained in inner castle when Eger fell. Later, they declared that they're gonna be Muslim and ask Ottomans to spare them. And Ottomans accepted their offer and spared them.

also, ottoman numbers are highly exaggerated. Allied army is said to be composed of whole europe in the video but they're still half the size of ottomans. turkey was less populous than many european countries until second half of 20th century.

So ultra exaggerated western numbers for Ottoman troops are often taken seriously while numbers Ottomans provide for western forces are always played down and called exaggerated.

Good example is the battle of Varna, sure Wladyslaus being king of both Hungary and Poland sounds menacing, but the polish nobles barely supported the campaign as they didn't considered it that important and sent minimal troops, as for Hungary, the king didn't even ruled the whole since an opposing faction controlled certain parts of the kingdom, such as the economically important northern mining cities. Other members of the crusade didn't showed up with all their soldiers either, and some were minor. (Just because the wiki shows Bulgaria for example, it only means that some peiple joined to the crusaders when they took it from the ottomans, not half of the realm)

Where exactly did they say this was a European army?? It wasn't. The alliance spanned Europe but it was mostly in name only, very few soldiers from Western Europe or Italy actually showed up. This is mostly just an alliance army between Austria and Transylvania. I don't think over 100.000 soldiers can be considered an exaggeration for an Ottoman army that was actually lead by the Sultan.

This period 14 th 15th 16th 17th and half of 18th the Ottoman Empire greatly dominated Europe .. However, the scales of the population turned against the Ottomans, from the 18th century. No that's not correct reason for ottoman downfall. There are at least 100 reasons. One of it was that weak sultan in later period.Pashas and Janissaries became disobedient to sultan and oppressed people within Sultanate either in Balkan or egypt. Later orthodox church also started to act like pashas of Ottoman.

Which period???Monasteries and churches in 16th , 17th ,18thcenturies paid taxes plus ransoms to local janissaries and pashas in order not to be burned down If they could not they were looted and burned to the ground.. Up to the 19th century, it is not allowed Churches to be built in cities. When allowed after big bribes buildings had not to be higher than mounted horsemen. Few underground churches had survived from that period. Also witnesses of Christian even a clergy was overruled by witnesses of any Muslim in court. At the ned of 18th century around 1760s national autocephalous (self governing ) Churches of Bulgarians1767, Serbians1764 and Wallahians were closed . They went under the tutelage of the Patriarchate of Constantinople (Greek church). Patriarchate was richly connected with Phanariots (Phanar, Greek suburb in Constantinople . Greeks from there received the right from Sultan to collect taxes from all Christians Bulgarians,Serbians and Wallahians) for him. They had the money to pay Sultan immediately and taxed as they please later. Patriarchate bribed the Sultan and took power over the souls of other Christians. Patriarhists did not allow them to use their languages and open schools. So Patriarhists took all power with help of the Sultan over all Christians. Bulgarians had to resist Ottomans and Greek suppression. Bulgaria intellectuals who dared to write in Bulgarian were executed by Ottomans after Greek Patriarhist manipulated them.That continued until the last days of the Ottoman Empire. Just in 1870 Sultan recognize the independence of the Bulgarian church and school . He gave them Hatisherif. Before you mention about Christianity and Churches on Balkans you must know a bit about them.

theres a lot more to it than that. In fact id argue that's a negligible factor considering they were still fielding larger armies than Christian powers, showing their vast manpower capabilities

@@hashtagrex the ottomans were huge that's why being huge also gives you more enemies and more lands to rule over but theres no denying over time ottoman armies never increased in size and European armies became signicsntly bigger

@@aiai8479 there is denying it because the ottoman armies did increase in size. Just as the rest of the world adapted to being able to field huge armies. The issue of ottoman armies being behind europeans was in logistics and army command, not size.
